"I so much appreciate receiving these "minutes"! They take a short time to browse through, and I am almost always left with a good 'take-away' thought to chew on. I enjoy the good ideas and insights, and always the encouragement from Todd to enjoy life and not feel guilty or overwhelmed or pressured."

Ideas for Special Needs Homeschoolers
|
|
Greetings!
 | Deborah Wuehler and family |
Want to hear some encouraging news? You can teach your child at home successfully, even and especially if she has special needs! Here's my true special needs story:
Our one child (who could be labeled Asperger's if we were giving labels) just passed the graduation requirements for our state, and at an earlier age than most "regular" kids. I know that keeping her home where she belongs is why she was successful, and will continue to be. We learned to focus on what was important and required, and cut out everything else. God favored her with a volunteer job in therapeutic horse riding for a year before she graduated from our homeschool, and now she has a vision to pursue a unique trade in equine massage. God has plans that we don't know or understand when our children are young and challenging. I was only thinking academics when she was younger and pushed those hard, to the frustration of both of us. I didn't even know what her special needs were called or what to look for, but I kept researching and praying and leaning hard on God and His wisdom. Over time, and through faith in God's Word that He rewards our obedience, we continued on day by day, ever seeking Him until He guided us where He wanted His special daughter to be. Was it rough? Yes, and it still is. But we have a faithful God who is the Author and Finisher of our faith and of our special children. Each one is God's "poema"-his workmanship-created in Christ Jesus for good works. God desires to use all of our special needs for His special glory!
Two of my favorite resources:
- Dianne Craft's website and workshops on teaching an ADHD/Asperger's child
- Christine Field's book Homeschooling the Challenging Child

Happy new year! Ready to jump into a new year of life and homeschooling?
Me neither. I'm having a little trouble getting motivated. And because I don't really have much expertise in very many things--especially special needs kids--I don't have a lot to say about this week's topic . . . except . . . love that child.
I know the temptation for any parent of any child is to love the easy-to-love, the easy-to-teach, the smart, the happy, the good student, the (fill in the blank). Sometimes the ones who don't fit those categories are harder to love or like, especially if you listen to the lies of the "achievers."
They're always saying how children should be doing this or that . . . by now or then. And sometimes special needs kids (and other kids, for that matter) don't, and so we begin to see our kids through the opposite of rose-colored glasses.
So let me encourage you parents of ALL children to love your children just the way they are . . . and stop wishing they'd be something else.
Be real,
Todd

Famous Figures of Medieval Times
I am such a fan of homeschool product and curriculum providers who do things beautifully and well, providing quality materials for us and our students to learn from and enjoy. Cathy Diez-Luckie's Famous Figures of Medieval Times from http://www.figuresinmotion.com is a resource that fits all of the above qualifications; at once educational and beautiful, it is put together of quality binding and has a lovely presentation. The book is recommended for ages 6 to 12, and I'd definitely agree with that recommendation; the figures appeal to a wide range.
I was first made aware of Cathy's Famous Figures books when I was perusing the vendor hall at a local homeschooling convention, and I was immediately drawn to her booth by what was obviously a quality product. Cathy was there, helpfully answering questions and demonstrating her other products, Famous Figures of Ancient Times,Famous Figures of the American Revolution, and Dinosaurs on the Move. In addition to her books, she provides the correct-sized hole punch you'll need as well as paper fasteners to do the projects right. Consider purchasing them from her to save yourself the headache of trying to find just the right one. (. . .)
