Thankful for God
|
|
Greetings!
We are going to celebrate a whole month of Thanksgiving here at The Homeschool Minute. And, of course, we would have no reason for thanks if it were not for the Father of all good and perfect gifts: God Himself! Beyond the well-known expressions of why we are thankful for God, I am thankful I have not been left alone; I have a helper, I have strength, I have direction, I have peace-all because I have God. Here is a list of some of our most unrelenting needs and how our great God meets them:
What We Need
| |
What God Gives
| | | |
I am depressed; discouraged; disappointed: I need hope
| | Why art thou cast down, O my soul? and why art thou disquieted in me? Hope thou in God: for I shall yet praise him for the help of his countenance. . . . Why art thou cast down, O my soul? and why art thou disquieted within me? Hope thou in God: for I shall yet praise him, who is the health of my countenance, and my God. Psalm 42:5, 11
| I need strength
| | Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God: I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee; yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness. Isaiah 41:10 | I need help
| | Behold, God is mine helper. Psalm 54:4
|
I need direction
| | The meek will he guide in judgment: and the meek will he teach his way. All the paths of the LORD are mercy and truth unto such as keep his covenant and his testimonies. Psalm 25:9, 10
|
I need peace
| | Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid. John 14:27 |
I need joy in the midst of tribulation
| | These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world. John 16:33
|
I need a fresh touch from God
| | Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you. James 4:8
| I need comfort | | I will not leave you comfortless: I will come to you. John 14:18
|
I need more grace
| | He giveth more grace. Wherefore he saith, God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace unto the humble. James 4:6 For the LORD God is a sun and shield: the LORD will give grace and glory: no good thing will he withhold from them that walk uprightly. Ps.Psalm 84:11 |
I need to be loved
| |
Yea, I have loved thee with an everlasting love; therefore, with lovingkindness have I drawn thee. Jeremiah 31:3
|
I am a sinner and need a Savior
| | For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life. John 3:16 |
All that we need for life and godliness (and homeschooling!) is found in Him-truly a reason for a heart and life and minute-by-minute thanksgiving!

Creation Revolution Depending upon where you are, this is the time of year when leaves begin to turn shades of yellows, oranges and reds. Hillsides look like an artist's painting, lit up by the colors of autumn leaves. Many photographers wait all year long for the colors of the leaves to change in hopes of getting the perfect photos that may help them win the next photo contest. But have you ever wondered what makes the leaves turn color?
Find the answer as you read Autumn Leaves.

The Familyman Todd Wilson, Familyman Ministries
I'm thankful for God . . . . . . filling in my many parenting gaps. . . . allowing me the great privilege of being the dad to my children and the husband to my bride. . . . sending His Son to give meaning and purpose to homeschooling, family, and life. . . . being enough when the bank is empty, the kids are monsters, and my wife doesn't like me much. . . . promising to complete what He started in me. . . . allowing me to be a part of your life in this "thing" called The Homeschool Minute. . . . knowing and loving the REAL me. Maybe it would be a good idea to make your own list. Be real, Todd P.S. I'm also thankful for free things! It's Just Common Sense
Ruth Beechick, Curriculum Specialist and Debbie Strayer, Homeschool Consultant 30 Days of Thankfulness There is so much to be thankful for. When my children were young, having dinner finished, pajamas on, popcorn, and watching a movie snuggled on the couch was every bit as special to me as a night at a fancy restaurant. For some reason, when my son was young, he loved to do reading sitting on my lap with one arm around my neck. It warmed my heart every time he did that. As a former classroom teacher, I knew the great treasure I had sitting with him this way as he learned to read. Though it wasn't always easy to find the time, journaling my blessings provided uplifting reading any time I was weary from the events of the day. I think that gratitude is better caught than taught. Though I can encourage my children to be grateful, nothing will affect them like my own level of gratitude. With this in mind, I suggest a little different take on the 30 Days of Thankfulness idea. May I suggest you make it your personal goal to become more observant of the blessings around you? Pray for the insight to see the hearts and intentions of others, no matter how their efforts turn out. Ask the Lord to make you quick to see both small and great demonstrations of love for you, your family, and the Lord. When you are tuned in to see the many things for which you can be grateful, complete the process by sharing your gratefulness for the efforts made. A task may not be done to perfection, but is it the person's best effort? If so, be quick to be grateful. We want to teach and train our children to be diligent, but we also want to show them how to be grateful. That doesn't come from instilling a sense of obligation in them. It comes from showing them a truly grateful heart. May these 30 days of gratefulness be a special blessing to each and every one of you. I am looking forward to having my heart focused on seeing the blessings around me. Every season of your life brings new challenges, but in His continual mercy, it also brings new reasons for gratitude. Let's look for and remember all the blessings He brings our way and, like Mary, treasure them in our hearts. ~ Debbie |

Point to Happy: A Book for Kids on the Autism Spectrum
This is such a fun book! It is a large board book. We have a child living with us at present who has a probable diagnosis of autism, and we are looking for ways to improve her language and communications skills. This book comes with a pointer that reminds me of an old-fashioned back scratcher, but the handle isn't that long. It's a colorful plastic hand on a short extension to use for pointing.
The book contains large photographs of children in different moods and situations, different foods (apples, pretzels, raisins, pizza, etc.), and other familiar objects. The idea is to have the children point to what they are feeling, what they want, or what interests them. Just the act of pointing at the objects and connecting them in their minds helps them to learn to focus. We are just learning some of the ways of engaging this child, but I can see this book being a very helpful tool in this endeavor. It would be wonderful if Workman Publishing would come out with some similar flashcards (heavy cardboard like the board book) to accompany this so that the child could actually hold each one in his or her hand.
We will use this book a lot, and I recommend it to others who need this type of resource. It could be a useful tool in improving the communications skill of your very special child.
