July means Swamiji's birthday, our annual Summer Retreat, and the opportunity to share our extraordinary practice, community, and environment with lots of people. In this issue we'll help you get ready for the Retreat with a primer on three of its unique features. We'll also give you a walking tour of the Portland property and introduce you to some of the people who help make it so beautiful. A
new department highlights news from The Movement Center, our "Best in
Portland" yoga studio. And as usual, we share the monthly birthday list and other member news.
I'm happy to report that the past
two issues have each been read by more than 300 people. Please feel
free to forward this one to people you know (using the link at the end of the page), and keep sending in your own news and giving us ideas for future issues.

Get Ready for the Retreat
Let's face it, retreats can be overwhelming. Daily meditation and yoga ... talks by Swamiji ... open-eye class ... pujas with Lama Wangdu ... catching up with old and new friends from around the world ... browsing all the new books, CDs, DVDs, handmade specialty items, and retreat aids ... and Swamiji's birthday party itself ... not to mention trying to find pockets of quiet time to absorb it all. It's enough to make your head spin. Use this handy primer to guide you on three of the more unusual events happening during Retreat week: * havans (for more information about Lakshmi, the goddess to whom the havans will be dedicated, click here) * darshan with Swamiji* birthday concertIf these are new to you, click the links so you can learn more about them and get more out of your
experience. Even if you're not coming to the Retreat, you're sure to feel more connected to what's going on and more educated as well. Also, a head's up for those of you coming from out of town. During the retreat we'll be having another in our series of "community cafes." This one is specifically designed for non-Portland members to gather and discuss issues that matter to our extended community.

| Movement Center Update

Hatha yoga not only supports our individual spiritual practice, it provides a way for many of us to give back to each other and to the larger community. From our Saturday morning summer Kids Yoga class by "Dr. Dan" (Dan Sisco, in blue shirt, above), to the new "Yoga + Meditation" program offered on Wednesday nights, to an Oregon Food Bank food drive (organized by member Chuck King--kicked off with a free yoga class in exchange for donated food items), and free community classes on Sundays by hatha teachers in training, Movement Center yoga has become an important tool for total well being and for the development of new generations of yogis. No wonder Citysearch has named ours the most popular yoga studio in Portland for the fourth year in a row!
For a look at all the yoga teachers who give unstintingly of their time, skill, and love of yoga week after week, year after year, click here. We owe them all a huge thank you. And stay tuned for more news about our yoga program in future issues.

Growing . . . and Giving Back
Congratulations to Portland member Laurie Saunders, who has just received an MBA, with a concentration in finance, from Keller Graduate School of Management (which is connected with DeVry University in Chicago), through an online program that lasted two and a half years. Now that she's passed this milestone, she'll be setting up shop as a private consultant.
Long-time members Dan Eyink (a physician in Boston) and Paul Lunn (an attorney in Seattle) have teamed up to patent a new treatment regimen for multiple sclerosis that has enormous potential benefit. According to Dan, they have "secured a patent methodology on healing MS lesions and are hopeful that one of the large pharmaceutical companies will buy into this and run trials." He continues, "I am also seeing and producing fair success in helping patients with their symptoms using auricular and scalp acupuncture on a daily basis."
Molly Merideth recently rode in the annual "Livestrong Challenge," an event sponsored by the Lance Armstrong Foundation in which cyclists, runners and walkers participate to raise money for the fight against cancer. Over 3,000 participants this year raised more than $1 million dollars for the cause. She called it a "thrilling experience."
