The Venerable Showers of Beauty Gamelan ensemble from Lewis & Clark College will give a special performance in the meditation hall on Friday, April 27, at 7:00 pm. The performance will begin with a short talk by Melissa Parkhurst, the director of the ensemble, about gamelan music, and a demonstration of the instruments and how a musical piece is constructed.

Venerable Showers of Beauty is a Javanese style gamelan, and all gamelan are named "Venerable" because it is believed that deities dwell in the instruments themselves. The music itself is like a sonic mandala. If you'd like to read a little more, there's an interesting article about gamelan  at http://pages.sbcglobal.net/jameswierzbicki/nonwestern.htm.

Everyone is welcome, and please tell your friends, family, co-workers, etc. The suggested donation is $10, and proceeds will be given to the ensemble to help maintain the instruments. The gamelan players are a group composed of Lewis & Clark students and others in the local community.
We're looking forward to this program, and we hope you'll join us.

Love,
