...and a word from Social Action
|
As the cost of groceries increases, and more people are out of work, or underemployed, the need for food has increased. In December, the Lutheran Church of the Reformation in West Long Branch, where we take our food donations, served over 300 families. The clientele has been changing in recent months. There are more middle class families who need help. Unemployment benefits are running out and the time it takes to get food stamps has increased. Not only is food given out, but they try to give out a bag of toiletries and laundry detergent every other month. These items tend to be expensive and cannot be bought using food stamps.
The Pantry at the Lutheran Church of the Reformation is a totally volunteer run organization. They are open Tuesday nights, Saturday mornings and some Mondays specifically for seniors. When you see this small building in the back of the parking lot, it is amazing to think of how many people are being served. I got involved a few years ago when the Social Action Committee asked for someone to help transport the food to the pantry. Now not only am I taking food, I volunteer once a month to help distribute the food. I also have gotten my family involved. For the past 2 years, instead of Hanukkah gifts for one night, we have given our children each $10 - $20 and taken them to the grocery store. They spend time to try to get the most food for their money. Then we go to the pantry and actually stock the shelves. It has become a very joyful holiday tradition for our family. But the need doesn't end with the holidays. Food is needed all year long.
I want to close by just encouraging everyone to think about buying something extra every week when you go to the grocery store. And get in the habit of bringing something to put in the food bin every time you come into the synagogue or every time your children come for Religious School. One can at a time, we can make a huge difference in our community.
