Pride Pays Off
I had once envied the work life of a shoe shine man. I was on vacation on a Caribbean island relaxing in a plaza as I observed the work of several shoe shine men. These were mature men, and entrepreneurs, who had elevated the unskilled task of shining shoes to a profession.
Each morning these well dressed gentlemen setup their work area in the plaza. They had a very comfortable chair, an umbrella to shield customers from the sun and a plethora of magazines and newspapers for their customers to peruse while waiting, or having their shoes shined. While these professionals worked, they had friendly conversations with their customers which were obviously enjoyed by both parties. And after such regal treatment I am sure most customers gave a generous tip.
So what made these shoe shine men different from most shoe shiners? PRIDE. They had pride in their appearance, in their work area and in their conversation skills. And that pride translated into higher revenues for their services, and more fun in their work.
So why did I envy them? Hey, how cool is it to earn a living hanging out in a tropical plaza and having friendly conversations with the locals?
