Habitat for Humanity
(A report by Sr. Nadia Wazwaz)

In the past 3 years, our high school students have made their mark in the community by helping to build a home with Habitat for Humanity. During these years, we have endured freezing weather, challenging working areas, and heavy rains.  What pulled us together all these times, despite the exhaustion is that we did it as a community.

On May 24th, some PSEO students and former graduates helped put up siding, scrape ceilings and cut through grout in a home in Brooklyn Park.  We were 16 in all, excluding the coordinator.  Yes, we were wet as we worked through the rain, but at the end of the day, MOST looked forward to 'next time'.

The real beauty of this is seeing our girls outnumber the boys in what many think is a 'man's job'.  It is tough work, for sure, but we have come through then and with Allah's (swt) blessings, will do so in the future.

Mentoring Club
Sr. Nadia Wazwaz is an Adviser to the Mentoring Club

The Mentoring Club is an after school club at Al-Amal composed of 27 ninth and tenth graders, but is open to all high school students who display good character and strive to do well in school.

The 9th and 10th graders mentored scores of younger students throughout the year and in the process not only helped provide mentoring but also strengthened their own leadership qualities. The 9 mentoring programs are as follows:
1. Character Builders
2. Story Tellers
3. Cooking Club
4. Art Club
5. Soccer Club
6. Qur'an Recitation
7. Drama Club
8. Islamic Helpers
9. Arabic Helpers

The Mentoring Club held an end of the year event to address the issue of bullying and any wrongdoing. They took part in a 'Do the Right Thing' campaign this year.

According to Sr. Nadia Wazwaz, "With all that we hear about bullying, we presented it as a challenge and put light on those who see bullying happen and do nothing.  We always hear about bullies and victims but chose this year to focus on the bystanders, those who look but do not stand up in any manner.  It was our theme to show the Islamic and legal perspective behind doing nothing for ANY WRONGDOING, and how it can forever change a person's life."

The presentation included skits, interviews, monologues, real life accounts of painful experiences, and statistics from a school survey.  We opened the eyes of many who didn't know how important bystanders are.

Thanks to Holyland for sponsoring our 'Do the Right Thing' campaign

Adpot A Highway Cleanup Coming Up ...
It's time for the Annual Adopt-A-Highway Spring Cleanup!

Volunteers are needed to help clean our 2 mile portion of highway from the area of Central Ave. between the 694 underpass southward to Rainbow Foods.  This generally takes less than 2 hours depending on the number of volunteers involved and is a nice social event.  It's also a great way for us, as Muslims, to be noticeably visible doing something positive as we do our part in helping to keep the community clean.

DATE:  Wednesday, June 6, 2012

TIME
1:45 p.m. - 3:45 p.m..  Everyone will take an arranged bus over to the cleanup area & begin.  Work should be completed around 3:45 p.m., Insha'Allah (the more volunteers there are, the quicker it goes)

WHO
:
All current students (9th and 10th grades), parents, teachers, and staff are encouraged to participate.  As always, alumni are also welcome, and PSEO & NHS students are strongly encouraged to participate (volunteer hours can be recorded).

All gloves, reflective vests, & plastic bags will be furnished.  Water & snacks will also be provided.  You just need to bring yourself & maybe some warm clothes! :)

People wanting to participate should email [email protected] ASAP.
