February 2012
Al-Amal Science Fair 2012
Al-Amal School 11th Annual Science Fair was a great success. The whole school was abuzz with excitement on February 3, 2012. A total of 56 projects from middle and high school were on display and 123 students participated in the competition.

There were 21 judges drawn from the community who did an amazing job of evaluating projects. Al-Amal School thanks them for their time and commitment.

Al-Amal teams are now preparing to enter the Central Minnesota Regional Science Fair in St. Cloud and expect a large contingent to take part in the event on Feb. 25. Al-Amal teams have also submitted their research papers and will be competing in that area as well.

Al-Amal is looking for sponsors from the community organizations to sponsor the teams at the regionals and as well as the state science fair. Please contact Mrs. Audrey Zahra Williams for more information.

Al-Amal Students Host IFYC Youth Group
Students Give Introduction on Islam and Muslims

Al-Amal School prepares its students to be active and involved members of the society. As one of the initiatives toward this, Al-Amal engages with other faith communities. On February 5, Al-Amal School students hosted the Interfaith Youth Leadership Coalition (IFYC) members.

Al-Amal and IFYC members together
Al-Amal Students Nasra (10th grade), Samira (10th grade), and Faizan (9th grade) gave an excellent presentation on Islam and Muslims to the visitors. This was followed up with Q&A. The students also took part in the IFYC meeting and interacted with the visitors.

In Q2 46% Students Are in the Principal's List
In the recently concluded second quarter, 46% of the students qualified to be in the Principal's List. In order for students to figure in the Principal's List, they have to score all A's (with a maximum of one B allowed). The Q2 numbers reflect a 25% increase in the number of students in the Principal's List compared to Q1.

Thanks to the initiatives undertaken by Mrs. Williams and her team, academics at Al-Amal are on an upswing.  Congratulations to Al-Amal teachers for their dedication and commitment.
Syria Awareness Month at Al-Amal

In a student led initiative, Al-Amal will be observing the month of February as Syria Awareness Month. Students have planned several activities including raising money for the refugees to be disbursed through Islamic Relief charity. On February 18, Al-Amal students are holding a special event for the community at large to increase awareness of the suffering in Syria. Please click the following link for more information.

Al-Amal Expansion - Financial Update
$363,000 still remains to be paid off

Since July 2011, Al-Amal School has paid off $55,000 of the personal loans given towards the school expansion project. The construction of the Middle/High school building was completed in 2007 for a total cost of about $2.8 million. Alhamdulillah, with the support of parents and other community members, the school raised and has paid off $2.44 million (87%) of the total cost.

Al-Amal School continues to seek your generous support to pay off the remaining $363,000 of the personal loans. Our goal is to raise and pay off about $150,000 in this fiscal year.
