Meet Al-Amal Alum Sumaiya Mandani Qadir, M.P.H
| |
Al-Amal Alum, Sumaiya Mamdani with her husband and son
Alhamdulillah, in 2003, I was one of the three students of Al-Amal School's first graduating class. Even though I attended Al-Amal for only four years, my education there broadened my academic and Islamic knowledge, strengthened my understanding of the world around me, and all the while gave me the confidence to better myself and be of service to my community.
My high school experience, including PSEO, was incredible. While I was involved in academic and extracurricular activities, I felt a great level of support from the teachers and administration. Knowing that I had a strong support system behind me helped me excel especially as the school was adapting to new challenges of administering the needs of PSEO students, which affected academic and graduation requirements. The workload was taxing at times, I can't deny that, but I knew that Al-Amal school was trying to push us to grow and exceed the norm. Imagine the excitement I felt when I was picked among 60,000 other University of Minnesota students for the President's Service and Leadership award? Alhamdullillah.
After graduating with my bachelors in Child Psychology and Biology in 2005, I was looking for a job in my field. What more could I do for the school than to return and give back to the Al-Amal community? There was no better way for me to give back to the school than to teach the kids there with the knowledge that I had been blessed with.
As I started teaching, I really felt happy and content to be working in the same surroundings that I grew up in. One of the things that really gave me joy is knowing that, Subhanallah, I am actually teaching a child of a former teacher of mine from when I was in high school at Al-Amal! Working at Al-Amal gave me even more appreciation for the school and all that it does.
After teaching for a while, I decided to go back to school. In 2009, I graduated from the University of MN School of Public Health with a Masters in Public Health in Maternal and Child Health and Global Health. Thereafter, I got married, and moved to Virginia/Washington DC area where I worked for VA Commonwealth University and VA Dept of Health. In 2010, my husband Mahdi and I were blessed with a baby boy named Zayd, who is now two years old. I pray that he, too, gets the opportunity to be blessed with an Islamic Education like I did, insha'Allah. To this day I remember my teachers at Al-Amal, and as I teach my son Islamic values, I pray that Allah (swt) bless them and reward them immensely for all that they do.

Al-Amal Students Speak at the State Capitol
| | |
National School Choice Week

Al-Amal 9th graders, Suboohi Khan and Sidhra Musani, were chosen to give a speech at the State Capitol for National School Choice Week. Farah AbuQalben, Al-Amal PSEO coordinator, who accompanied the students wrote, "They presented themselves with confidence, and great poise. During their speech, one of the directors of The Minnesota Independent School Forum told me that she was impressed with their speech, and that listening to them she would not have guessed they were only Freshmen in high school. Several people also came up to me after the event praising the wonderful job the girls did. I would like to thank their parents, and teachers, for the wonderful job they have done helping these girls become the talented young women they are today."

This tremendous effort put in by students is a testimony to the encouragement and supported extended by the science teacher, Sr. Hala Bazzi. Rawan Hamade, an Al-Amal alum studying at the University of Minnesota has been guiding and mentoring several teams all throughout the month. The school science fair will be held on Feb. 3rd inshaAllah. Several community members have signed up to serve as judges at the science fair. Academic Excellence Committee
| | |
Al-Amal School's Academic Excellence Committee, comprising of several parents, is engaged in initiatives that bring excellence in education at Al-Amal. One of the major initiative being pursued by this committee is to help usher Al-Amal into integrating technology into the classrooms.
The sub-committee in charge of this task visited prominent private schools in the Twin Cities such as Breck, Blake, and Benilde-St. Margaret's School to gather information on ongoing trends in information technology. The committee will be submitting a proposal to the school administration regarding technology integration targeted for the next school year.

Al-Amal Expansion - Financial Update
| | |
$363,000 still remains to be paid off
Since July 2011, Al-Amal School has paid off $55,000 of the personal loans given towards the school expansion project. The construction of the Middle/High school building was completed in 2007 for a total cost of about $2.8 million. Alhamdulillah, with the support of parents and other community members, the school raised and has paid off $2.44 million (87%) of the total cost.
Al-Amal School continues to seek your generous support to pay off the remaining $363,000 of the personal loans. Our goal is to raise and pay off about $150,000 in this fiscal year.

Al-Amal Students Volunteer at a Major Food Bank
| | (Report submitted by Asma Adam)
A group of Al-Amal PSEO students and alumni volunteered at Second Harvest Heartland, a major food bank that distributes food to food shelves, soup kitchens, and homeless shelters around the Twin Cities metro as well as regions in western Wisconsin. The goal of Second Harvest Heartland is to create a "hunger-free Minnesota" and feed all those in need in the state. The food bank receives donations from non-profit organizations, large corporations, and from ordinary citizens.
When we went to volunteer, I really didn't know what to expect. I imagined loading boxes of canned goods onto the back of a large truck. As we entered the large warehouse, the task of the day was to package a large barrel of hot cereal into two-pound individual bags. We also had to label, seal, and place the bags into boxes. The task was definitely more difficult than it sounds. Our hard work was attested by our white-powdered clothing and tired arms. In a short two hours we packaged over 700 bags and 1,500 pounds of cereal! This goes to show that if we all work together to help our community we can make a big difference in a short period of time.

Al-Amal Students Help Syrian and Somali Victims
| | |
Helping victims of violence in Syria:
Al-Amal School students are taught to have compassion and care for humanity. In view of this tradition of reaching out to those in pain, Al-Amal students will be raising funds through donations and bake sales for victims of violence in Syria in February. Monies collected will be sent to an accredited US charity, Islamic Relief USA.
I am a STAR Fundraising for the famine in Somalia: Middle School students at the school helped the Minneapolis School Districts with the American Refugee Committee to raise funds for Somali families affected by the famine. Students raised $385 during the first two weeks of January with a bake sale and a coin collection.
