Holiday shoppers at a past Alternative Gift Fair
|
The eighth annual Ithaca Alternative Gift Fair will take place on Saturday, December 3 at two adjacent locations in Dewitt Park: The First Baptist Church and the First Presbyterian Church.
The Ithaca Alternative Gift Fair offers holiday shoppers a choice of gifts to honor family and friends while supporting charities and non-profit organizations in a festive atmosphere. Holiday shoppers browse displays and tables from over sixty local non-profit and social service agencies to donate to in a loved one's name.
How Does It Work?
Each organization that participates in the fair offers variously priced gifts that have a specific purpose. Gifts in the past have ranged from $5 to give a compact fluorescent light bulb to a local, rural household; $10 for a week of school, clothing and two meals a day for an orphan in Zambia; to $100 for a "Golden Opportunity" scholarship fund to help students remain successful in area schools. This year there will be over 300 offerings to choose from. For each donation, the giver receives a holiday card with a description of the organization and gift, and the organization to which your contribution is made gets 100% of your donation.
The Ithaca Alternative Gift Fair is co-sponsored by the Center for Transformative Action and Tompkins Community Action.

This past month, CTA celebrated 40 years of peace & social justice work with a number of special events in Ithaca and at Cornell. We are grateful to Cornell Chronicle, Ithaca Times and WHCU for helping us publicize our events and our visiting guest, acclaimed artist Lily Yeh. The Ithaca Times also recently wrote a piece on Kirby Edmonds, the director of the Dorothy Cotton Institute, and his work in bringing human rights curriculum to local area schools.
