America's Cup Visits San Diego
Riviera Rendezvous
San Diego saved the best for last, testing the international America's Cup World Series fleet with the strongest winds of the week, with gusts approaching 20 knots on Sunday afternoon, making for great racing conditions. The teams didn't disappoint the fans gathered on Broadway and Navy Piers - the race was full of intrigue, with plenty of lead changes on the race course, and lots of near misses and thrills and spills from start to finish.

ORACLE Racing Spithill, winners on Saturday of the Match Racing Championship, came from behind to win the Fleet Racing Championship, becoming the first team to secure a double win at the AC World Series. Once again, team principal Larry Ellison was on board with the team today.

"We really wanted to win the double," said skipper James Spithill following the race. "We started okay, but got mixed up in the pack. But JK (tactician John Kostecki) got us back into it and then the boys did a fantastic job. We were able to stretch away and use our speed."

As Veterans Day back home draws to a close, the Carrier Classic college basketball game between Michigan State and University of North Carolina aboard one of our sister carriers, USS Carl Vinson, just wrapped up. Our next day is already busy. It was great to be able to watch the game and see so much support for the sacrifice and service of Sailors and our families and friends. We are grateful to all of you for your thoughtful comments each day and your support for us here and back home. You make each day better for us. Thank you. ---LCDR Fields, PAO

2012 Horizon EP 69
EP 69
EP 69
EP 69

We were excited to learn a little about the cruising characteristics of the all new Horizon EP 69. This long range expedition yacht was quite a departure for Horizon, who had built mainly planing and semi-displacement yachts of a European look and feel.  These were, and are, beautiful to look at and very stylish and of unparalleled quality.  The EP series has that same great quality but is  a more practical look at efficiency and long range cruising with an eye toward sea worthiness and sea keeping as well as economy.

We left Seattle's Shilshole Bay Marina at 6:15 AM Wednesday July 27.  Six hours later we were entering Roche Harbor on San Juan island a distance of some 72 nautical miles.  While this appears to be a 12 knot average, we did have a tidal push for more than half the way but were fighting a current the last 1 ½  to 2 hours.  Our best speed over the bottom was 13.7 knots and our worst was 8.2-8.5 knots.  Running at 1500 RPM, our average speed through the water was 10.6 knots, which is considerably better than  other "expedition style"  yachts.  We ran one generator for Air conditioning and both of the MAN 2876's (560 hp) and the boat was so quiet that we had to keep checking the digital monitors to make certain everything was still running.  We had leveled both day tanks at the 300 gallon mark.  From Lake Union Seattle, to the Shilshole Marina (1.5 hours mostly idle) to Roche Harbor another 6 hours plus an hour of milling around in the harbor we'd put 8+ hours on the hour meters and burned less than 100 gallons, total burn!!  That's an average of 11.76 gallons per hour on a 170,000# yacht!  And we still had the redundancy and peace of mind that twin engines bring plus great handling in the  tight spaces of the marina.

The Horizon design team did not set out to build another single engine trawler.  Instead, they built a beautiful, twin engine yacht that just happens to be very fuel efficient.  A former owner of one of these trawlers, who now owns a Horizon, stated that at times his 7.5 knot boat felt dangerous in the heavy currents of British Columbia waters.  With the EP one can maneuver so much better both in the marina and in heavy seas.  We crossed the Straits of Juan de Fuca in 5-6' Seas and the ABT stabilizers and bulbous bow made for a very nice ride.  We actually passed some vessels that were designed to go much faster but were wallowing around in the slop of the straits.  While this is a huge vessel (for a 69 footer) we had good sight lines and visibility was great.

All in all the trip was pleasantly uneventful and a joy to be on.

Here are some results from freshwater sea trials in Lake Washington.  Salt water will give lower fuel burn and slightly higher speeds but there's the variable of tide and current.

2005 39' Sea Ray 390 Motor Yacht
Riviera Rendezvous
This Sea Ray Motor Yacht is in showroom condition, very low use, and captain maintained. Building on their reputation for design innovation, Sea Ray's 390 Motor Yacht differs from traditional motor yachts in that the helm and aft deck of the 390 are on the same level.  The advantage of this layout is that it keeps the captain in the social center of the boat rather than isolated on a fly bridge.  From the standpoint of comfort, the 390 receives high marks for her spacious interior and luxurious accommodations.  The light-filled salon is accented with high-gloss cherry cabinetry and leather upholstery, and a high/low table with stools and a breakfast bar provide dining space.  The galley, which is down from the salon level, benefits from the natural light that flows from an overhead skylight.  Topside, an extended hardtop shelters the aft deck with its wet bar, acrylic wing doors, and bench seating.  A stairway with a safety railing leads down to the swim platform.

169' Davie Luxury Expedition Ship
Riviera Rendezvous

Perfect mothership for a fishing expedition.  Owner will consider trade for real estate in the US

With a range of over 5,000 miles, a 15% reserve and a few smaller boats on board, Beauport's destinations are unlimited. The ship has supported documentary filming by Jean Michel Cousteau and ecological expeditions. Recent owners have upgraded Beauport with a luxurious, and liveable layout.

Beauport will burn 28 gallons of diesel per hour at cruising speed

With her 680 Tons GWT she will give you a comfortable ride.

She was built in 1960 for the Canadian Coast Guard as a sounding vessel and Bouy tender, designed and constructed to withstand light ice-breaking duty. She stayed in the fleet and in fresh water until 1993. She was bought by a Scottish gentlemen who started her renovation by adding a huge master suite on the upper deck, a number of cabins were removed to make way for a main salon and guest cabins.

in 1998 Beauport underwent a six month mechanical refit of all engines and operating systems in Jacksonville, Florida. A 150kw Isuzu generator, Hynautics stabilizers, bow thruster and watermaker were added. In 2000, two John Deere, 110 and 115kw generators, and a massive 8 ton hydraulic crane were installed. The current owner has continued upgrading the ship, plumbing, electrical and major systems since the vessel was purchased. Great crew with seaman papers, this ship is ready to go for its next adventure.

We have 4 guest staterooms on deck, 5 guest staterooms on the lower deck, captain's quarter and master on the upper deck. Crew quarters with 5 cabins, sauna, massage room and gym.

The boat is located in Ensenada, Mexico, 1 1/2 hour drive from San Diego.
