Pick an Adventure Seminar

Some of us are old-enough to remember a series of interactive books where readers were asked to make a decision and then go to a corresponding page to see what sort of mess you got yourself into. You never quite knew where you were going to wind up with these books--pre-video game era, these were a novel idea.

Here's where you come in, if you'd like to host a seminar and save yourself some bucks off of the standard fees in the process--if you've got an Adventure Race in your area, a rock you think I'd like to climb, a river you think I want to raft, a hike you think I just need to take, a desert I've not run on, you get the idea--pitch your adventure and school location. If the adventure appeals and the logistics are right we offer greatly reduced fees to come to your school and play with your crew before we go play at your Adventure Pitch.

BTW--You and your crew are welcome to attend the adventure, as a matter of fact, we'll knock off even more bucks for this sort of hands-on guiding.

So, you got some adrenaline in your neck-of-the-woods and want to train? Feel free to make your pitch and we'll see what happens.

ESP RAW 119: Combination Ladders

In this striking-only volume of RAW we'll lay-out a plan as to how to get your offensive-defensive striking rolling from Day 1.

One of the biggest hurdles in striking training is how to transfer skills honed on the bag, on the pads, in front of the mirror, and in passive partner drills to actual pragmatic effectiveness in the ring or cage.

Often we see athletes who look good in all versions of the above drills look like hamstrung, clumsy versions of themselves when live-sparring turns the heat up.

(We'll cover more of why this might be in an upcoming Legends article, and why a few long-time training methods may actually be causing this).

This volume of RAW introduces the concept of Combination Ladders (we will illustrate via boxing but the Drills hold for all striking sports).

In essence Combination Ladders force you to focus on each link of a striking combination so that no individual element is given short-shrift. We've been big adherents of this method for a while but...there was still something lacking. I still wasn't a fan of the quality of transfer to live-fire.

We've now go that licked.

We will take the Combination Ladder through Four Forms that by the end of the drilling process gets you to free-form live-fire conditions and better able to transfer drilled skills to the environment where they will do you the most good.

We will use a single example combination to run through the aforementioned Four Forms

  1. THE BUILD
  2. THE FLIP
  3. THE OFFENSIVE SHUFFLE
  4. THE DEFENSIVE SHUFFLE

The crux of the forms is, yes, their adherence to live-fire principles, but, perhaps more importantly, how we can now kill a bit of the predictability of a predictable drill. (Paradoxical I know but you'll know what I mean when you hit the drills and feel the odd flutter of the unfamiliar as you re-seat old-skills).

We provide the usual printed syllabus with this volume and a Top 20 Boxing Combinations list to put the pedal to the metal, but, in addition , to really get you deep into this process we will also throw-in an advance chapter from our upcoming book on Counter-Boxing that I feel will add more grist for the mill to get you fast-tracked to pragmatic striking prowess.

ESP RAW 119: can be had this month for only $32 (S & H included--Domestic & International) at the end of the month the price goes to $42 Domestic/$52 International.

Different Times
Mark Hatmaker

Today another brief historical detour.

I want you to picture this--current President Barack Obama and Abigail R. Kimbell, our current head of the US Forest Service, meeting and greeting for some bureaucratic whatever on the tax-payer dime. After the confab the Commander-in-Chief offers a friendly challenge to hit the wrestling mat. Abigail, being a keen sportswoman says, "You bet." (I have no idea whether our chief forester wrestles or not, but for the sake of this example--she's all about it).

They hit the mat and POTUS gets the takedown and pin pretty quick--score one for the "Leader of the free world."

Abigail, is a good sport, but also mighty competitive says let's lace up the gloves and box a few rounds. The Prez is game, they commence fisticuffs and Abby bangs a good right to the chin and the Chief Executive goes down.

With a W in each column they bump fists and have a beer.

Hard to imagine, huh?  Maybe it was the mixed-gender nature of my example, if that's the case run the same above scenario with any of the political matches below (to be fair, put each of these folks at their prime--whatever that means)...
  • Mitt Romney vs. Newt Gingrich
  • Joe Biden vs. Al Gore
  • Bill Clinton vs. Joe Lieberman
  • John McCain vs. Paul Ryan (OK, with both in their prime, this one might happen).

My point is, it's mighty tough to imagine our "leaders" engaging in anything more strenuous than golf or maybe pick-up hoops. Contrast that thought with this match-up:
  • New York Governor (at the time) Teddy Roosevelt vs.  Gifford Pinchot (Future first head of the US Forest Service).

Teddy and Pinchot, both avid adherents of the "strenuous life" and, also, good friends played out our opening scenario at the governor's mansion in Albany in 1899.  Fun stuff. I have no love for TR's politics, and find some of Pinchot's approach mis-guided but I still can't help but conjure a little affection for the two when I ponder the scenario.

I wonder when it started that golf and "jogging" and such activities became the sport of choice for "our betters"? With the blooming of MMA it seems only a matter of time before we, perhaps, see a little playful throwdown in the Oval Office. A good double leg from our Secretary of State followed by a rear-naked from the Prez. I'm sure I'll like that story too--odds are, I'll almost certainly abhor their politics, but I'll cut them a tiny bit of slack for not having to hear one more golf story.
