It's Friday and time for this week's Legends, a few things first...
  1. Below you'll find info on RAW 117 on the subject of Breakdown Combinations. There are only 5 more days to pick it up for the discounted price.
  2. Volume 1 of our street series has just  been released. It is the first volume that is meant to accompany the harsh tactics we advocate in our street-self defense manual NO SECOND CHANCE.  This first volume clocks in at over 3 1/2 hours and introduces the Natural Weapons Vocabulary, The Head-to-Toe Target System, introduces Static Scenario Drilling, and closes with Fluid Scenario Drilling i.e., the statistically most likely assault situations. (Disclosure: This volume is weapons-free, Volume 2 will cover that contingency in great depth). This 3 1/2 hour Volume retails for $49.95 Domestic/$59.95 International. Newsletter subscribers can pick it up for the next few weeks for $44.00 US and $54.00 International.
  3. Today's article is an except from our book NO SECOND CHANCE.

ESP RAW 117: Breakdown Combinations Vol. 1 (Pry Variations)

If you're rolling with a wrestler (or any good grappler for that matter no matter the style, but, let's be honest, especially a wrestler) you're going to need more than a few breakdowns in your arsenal.

Breakdowns, for the novices to Western Wrestling, are tactics to get your fighter out of a 4-point base (hands-and-knees position to all, 1/4 Position to old schoolers, and perhaps the turtle position to those with a gi-based background).

Hooking an opponent in a 1/4 position will result in fighting some good offense or being bucked off altogether, that is if the opponent is worth his salt. With that in mind, the old school strategy of destroying that base is a wise way to run.

The common problems with breakdowns are threefold...

  1. The vocabulary is too shallow, that is a little juking an jiving by the bottom man either puts you out of position for your go-to or leaves you chasing predictable options making you a grappling telegraph and SOL.
  2. The vocabulary is predicated on setting the sub before the control--that's where losing the sub altogether comes into play.
  3. The breakdown violates hip-dominance theory and thus shaking off and tri-podding are made easier for your opponent.

This volume of RAW is the first in a periodic series that will expand your vocabulary according to positional reference. A preview of what you'll find on this volume...

  • Why you always pry and never seatbelt--never. I repeat, never.
  • Long-time RAW subscribers know that I will open this with a Jam & Rotary or Spiral. You can also predict that we'll run this into the 3 Primary follow-up submissions that call for adherence to good wrestling pressure theory. (Good news, crew, these subs will work with every single variation to follow--that means memorize your set-ups and then overlay the triple crown of violence at each breakdown dead-end--Oh, and no worries new subs ahead).
  • Next we'll cover three ways to finish that spiral when your opponent has fought your near-arm out of play.
  • You got a guy completely "turtled"? (Why this was ever a strategy I'll never understand). Can't insert a pry to save your life? Sure you can. He won't like it but what do you care?
  • If (if) that near-arm is still not available it's time to go Hock-Ride. There will be so much pressure on the un-defended knee he'll beg for the neck crank.
  • We'll also use that Hock Ride to hit a True Hammer Lock and Pin to an Inverted Sleeper--all very tasty options.
  • We'll close out with the proper way to work the Head Lever (BTW--If you apply the Head Lever concept shown here to your clinch game more opportunities will open for you).
  • We'll use that Head Lever and illustrate how to put maximum pressure on with a Chicken Wing. BTW-This is a tapping Chicken Wing and not a Pin Chicken Wing.
  • The only problem with a Chicken-Wing is the loss due to roll about 30% of the time....what you need is a Nelson Body Block and that roll ain't gonna happen again. (We'll add an Inverted Armbar for those with short arms for far Nelsons).

RAW 117 gives you 6 Breakdown drills that culminate in 22 hooks.

(This DVD comes with a printed syllabus for inclusion in your training notebook).

ESP RAW 117: can be had this month for only $32 (S & H included) at the end of the month the price goes to $42 Domestic/$52 International.

Save Others By Showing Them How to Save Themselves
Mark Hatmaker

The following is an excerpt from our street self-defense manual NO SECOND CHANCE. In light of the recent atrocity in Aurora I felt that this bit might be of use to those with confined area tactics on their minds.

Please, keep in mind there is absolutely zero indictment of any response of any victim in any crime any where ever in what you will find below. The victim is never--never--at fault. The victim never makes a bad/wrong move--no one should ever have to be forced into siltations that these folks faced. All tactics adopted by anyone in these high-pressure chaos situations are (and should be) immune to criticism.

What is offered below is merely food for thought. Whether any of the ideas could have been applied to this recent shooting (or any other shooting for that matter) is academic and I hope that it remains forever academic for everyone who reads these words.

SAVE OTHERS BY SHOWING THEM HOW TO SAVE THEMSELVES

You wanna be a hero and help others facing a violent predator? Then run away.

You and a friend are walking down a street and are suddenly confronted by a gun-wielding assailant, what do you do to help them? Wrestle the weapon from the attacker? Leap in front of your friend shielding them with your own body? No, you simply run away.

You are attending a lecture in an auditorium, suddenly shots are fired, do you stop to formulate a plan with the other attendees on how to best gang-up on the attacker? Hide behind a row of seats? Again, no, you run.

If the behavior I am describing strikes you as not quite heroic, please consider the herd mentality of human beings. Human beings are social animals and though we like to think of ourselves as individuals, in certain situations we behave as a single entity. Studies of crowds/mobs show that individuals, in certain circumstances, begin to behave as one, begin to move en masse, to emulate the behavior of those in their immediate proximity.

During a threatening situation if no single individual makes a move to escape, then the herd will remain complaisant. The herd will freeze caught in the no man's land between fight and flight.

If one individual, in a threatening situation, makes a movement towards escape the herd begins to ripple with like-minded activity. Studies of crowds/mobs in relatively confined areas that have to react to a threat of some sort (fire, sniper attack, et cetera) show that there is an initial freeze but as soon as a single individual begins to make a move, others follow suit--more often than not following the individual who made the initial move.

If the crowd is in a confined environment and unable to flee there is a general freezing unless or until a single individual makes a move to fight back. In 1993, Colin Ferguson opened fire inside the car of a Long Island train, killing five and wounding seventeen. Reports indicate that there was a general freezing (making target acquisition for the shooter all the easier) until one passenger made a move to bring Ferguson down. As soon as one made the move, others joined in.

We have to accept the fact that humans can behave remarkably like sheep as fashions, fads, and trends indicate in benign areas. This attribute in threat situation can either be deadly or, of utmost value; depending on how you utilize it. You must be the individual that decides beforehand that you will not be the frozen sheep or, the proverbial deer in the headlights. You must decide that if there is an exit you will find it. If there are no exits, you must decide ahead of time that you will lead the herd to the attacker to halt the mayhem

By all means, discuss your run first, ask questions later policy with your loved ones. Let them know that the same is expected of them in dire circumstances. Once everyone is on the same page the decision to flee is all the easier. If members of your family are too young or infirm to run, decide beforehand who has the responsibility to assist whom. Don't wait for the day of an attack for this decision--do it now. Wondering if you've left a loved one behind will cause you to vacillate in indecision. You must trust the human capacity for like-behavior and show them how to save themselves by running wherever and whenever possible and fighting back if escape is not an option.

Again, if running strikes you as particularly cowardly, let me ask you this? Let's suppose you enter a convenience store for a gallon of milk; you find yourself inside with the clerk and four other customers. An armed assailant enters the store, are you best fighting the assailant to save the others inside the store definitely putting your life at risk or, would it not be wiser to flee and spur others to do likewise? And if the others don't take your cue or are unable to flee your behavior will still be heroic in that you will now be the only individual able to dial 911 and muster professional help to provide real assistance to those who did not or could not take your cue.

The nature of human beings is conformity. That's just a fact. You must learn to accept this fact and then override it just enough to be willing to throw out your fiction based assumptions of what heroism is and provide an example of true heroism; be the good gazelle, show the herd how to get away from the lion.
