Transitions:  The Unity of Faith

Search Committee Update

by Sarah Goodness

Thank you to all of you who attended the meetings with Canon Britt Olson after the services on Sunday, April 22.  We hope the Q&A session provided you with much needed answers to understand the Bishop Office's role in this process of transition, as well as where the Search Committee is in that process.

For those of you who were unable to attend the meeting, not to worry!  One of the main goals of our Search Committee is to provide the congregation as much information as possible.  The Parish Profile is a document developed by the Search Committee, relying heavily on the survey taken by the whole congregation, which applicants will read in order to get an idea of what Faith Church is, where we have been, what we value, what we are looking for and where we would like to go.

Our intention was to capture the voice of our congregation.  It is helpful to read this document so

(1) you know what the Search Committee has been up to, and

(2) you understand the criteria the Search Committee is using in order to select qualified candidates for Kent's replacement.

The Online Profile is available as a series of web-pages, with video and photos.

We understand not everyone enjoys reading online, so printed copies of the Parish Profile are available in the Rotunda at the Information Center, or you can print your own from the link on the web-site (upper right corner).  Please note that the printed document will not have all the pictures and videos which are available on the online version of the Profile.

If you ever have any questions regarding the search process, please do not hesitate to contact anyone on the committee. Contact information for committee members is available in the Online Photo Directory.

The Search Committee Members:

Fred Campbell-Craven, Sharon Morrison, Tim Daust, David Kors, Pat Hill, Jeanette Bessent, Sarah Goodness, Pat Ekelund (administrative support), and Mary Higbee (chaplain)

Vacation Bible School

June 11 - 15, 9 - noon at Faith ChurchSky VBS logo

Reasons to be a Vacation Bible School Volunteer

  • Live out the Faith Church vision to be a place that welcomes children!
  • Help children build their spiritual houses on the firm foundation of Christ!
  • Follow Jesus' command to feed his lambs!
  • Have fun! Release your inner child! Play!
  • Spend quality time with your child, your grandchild or your neighbor's child!
  •

Can you do Crew?

At this time we are especially looking for crew leaders. Crew leaders are NOT teachers, and there is no preparation involved. Crew leaders escort 4-5 children from station to station, and encourage and help those children while they are there. By the end of the week, you have some new young friends! We are striving to fill our positions by mid-May as there is some brief paperwork, a (free to you) background check, and a short training session to be completed prior to VBS.

We also have opportunities for snack station leaders, and registration/check-in table greeters.

Sierra Service Project Dinner and Auction

Thank You!western wear

The final numbers aren't yet tallied, but we appreciate all those who supported the Sierra Service Project team at their annual dinner and auction on Friday, April 20th.

The youth on the team each pay their own fees to participate in a week of service projects and spiritual growth.

The dinner and auction raise the funds for the 3 chaperone's fees (who are giving a week of vacation time) and the rental of the vans to get them to Los Angeles and back.

Thank you to all who donated auction items, purchased tickets and/or auction items, made a donation, and contributed to the fun atmosphere and delicious BBQ dinner.

Sending Off Another Intrepid Missionary

by Becky Hudak

We will soon be sending Patrick Hill off to South Sudan for 12 days of volunteer work with Hope for Humanity, Inc. This opportunity opened up for Pat when he began talking with Mary Higbee about the work with which she and Jim were involved, helping to start the organization's Hope and Resurrection Secondary School.

Founded in 2008, the school is one of only 22 high schools in South Sudan, a country with a literacy rate of only 20% and a severe shortage of trained teachers. Hope for Humanity is committed to education as the best way to help the Sudanese lift themselves out of poverty.

Pat is very excited that details have fallen into place, paving the way for him to serve. He will work as a videographer, interviewing students and staff to document the progress that has been made and the vision for the future. The videos will be available through hopeforhumanityinc.org and social media channels.

If you would like to support Pat on this mission, please make your donation to Faith Episcopal Church (memo: Pat Hill). We will keep Pat in our prayers and look forward to hearing about his experiences upon his return.

Mark your calendar for a Missions Team potluck on Sunday, June 3rd at 6:00 PM. After supper, Mary and Jim Higbee will share about their recent mission trip to Kenya.

Faith Church has actively sponsored the Higbee's work and Mary and Jim look forward to introducing you to some of the Kenyans, whom they have met and worked with, through their photos and stories. Come for a relaxing evening of fellowship and an armchair adventure to Kenya to witness all that has been accomplished and glimpse a future full of possibilities.

Update on the Well

The bad news:  The well that was being tested in Africa came up dry and the Well Mauritaniarecommendation is that it should be abandoned.

The good news:  the survey team has identified 3 spots nearby with water at 70 - 100 meters.

Negotiations are underway with the well drillers to establish a price.  The area is rocky and remote.  Additional funds may be needed.

Please pray for the workers, and the people in this region, that they may develop a source of life-sustaining, clean water.

Worth Two Days!

Leadership Summit - for Church and Business

 gls

Each year, in August, a group of people from Faith Church spend a Thursday and Friday soaking up nuggets of leadership wisdom at the Global Leadership Summit.  We travel to Lakeside Church in Folsom, where we participate via simul-cast with approximatley 50,000 people across the US.

The First Serve concept came from the Summit.  The Hole in Our Gospel program came from the Summit.  Many other ideas have been implimented after someone was struck by something they heard during a Summit session.

Summit attendance is open to anyone who is interested.  There is a special student if you know of a young person who might be inspired by what they hear.

This year's line up is an impressive variety of speakers from business, academia and the church world:

Bill Hybels - founder and senior pastor, Willow Creek Community Chuch

Condoleezza Rice - former US Secretary of State

Jim Collins - nationally acclaimed business thinker and author

Mark Kielburger - co-founder, Free the Children, co-founder and ce-CEO, Me to We, Toronto, Ontario

Sherl Wudunn - best-selling author, Pullitzer prize winner, business executive

Craig Groeschel - founder and senior pastor LifeChurch.tv

John Ortberg, senior pastor, Menlo Park Presbyterian Church and author

Mario Vega - senior pastor, Mision Cristiana Elim, El Salvador

Patrick Lencioni - founder and president, The Table Group, best-selling author

Geoffrey Canada - president and CEO, Harlem Children's Zone

Pranitha Timothy - director of Aftercare, International Justice Mission, Chennai, India

William L. Ury - co-founder and senior fellow, Harvard University's Program on Negotiation.

The price for these two days is $149 from now until May 22, if you register via Faith Episcopal Church's WCA membership.  Contact Kim in the church office.
