Farewell Potluck

Liz PotluckPastor Liz Armstrong has accepted a call to be the vicar of St. Augustine's Episcopal Church in Rocklin, CA.

On Sunday, October 16, at 6:00 p.m. we are having a potluck to thank her for the 11 years she has spent ministering to us and to ask God's blessing on her ministry with the people of St. Augustine's.

Bring a main dish, salad or dessert to share.  Coffee, tea and punch will be available.

Life at Faith Church After Pastor Liz Departs

by Kent McNair

As announced last Sunday, Pastor Liz has taken a call to be the Vicar of St. Augustine's Church in Rocklin. Her last Sunday at Faith Church will be October 23rd.  Liz has been at Faith Church for 11 years and has been a vital part of the success and health of our church.

Since the church is in a transition with me leaving at the end of 2012, we cannot hire a full time replacement for Liz at this time. With the approval of the vestry, I have asked Pastor Gene Jewell to help me carry out some of the pastoral work of the congregation. He will be part time and will not be involved in the day-to-day administration of the church. We are very fortunate to have Gene in our community during this time.

I have also asked Janie and Ken Shepherd to step in help oversee our youth group. They both have been very, very faithful volunteers with our youth and thus we can all be assured that our youth program will continue in a healthy and positive way.

With these two additions I am confident that we will continue to have a strong and vibrant faith community. But this is also a time when every person is called to work, pray and give for the spread of the kingdom in this place. You are important. This is your church!

May the Lord bless Liz in her new adventure; the leaders of Faith Church as they look to the future; and every member as we all together seek our role in the life of the church.

Church Survey Opens in October

Plan to Participate!

by Patrick Hill

whats your opinionThe history of Faith Church has been marked by a series of firsts.

The first planning sessions of what would become Faith Church were held in 1991 at the home of Kent and Kathy McNair.

The first public worship services were held in the strip mall on Cambridge Road on Easter Sunday in 1992.

The first capital campaign, to raise funds to prepare the 10-acre site for Faith Church, began in 1999.

And in February, 2003, we held the first service at our all-purpose building.

Now we are at the point of another first-our first transition to new spiritual leadership.

Earlier this year, in a letter to members of the church, Fr. McNair announced his intention to end his ministry at Faith Church by the end of 2012. Since his announcement, the church has been working on a transition plan to ensure its health and financial strength for the future. An eight-member transition team has been convened to help facilitate the process.

Church Assessment Scheduled

In one of the first steps, the Vestry retained Holy Cow! Consulting for the purpose of conducting an assessment of the current life of the church. The assessment will be carried out in October and members are asked to participate in the online survey beginning October 10. More information, and links to the survey, will be announced and sent shortly.

For those without access to a computer, the church will set up a computer during business hours and Sundays. For those who wish to steer clear of the online process, a paper survey will be available, and later entered into the online data base.

All survey responses are anonymous. Taking the "temperature" of the church is a critical first step toward selecting a successor to Fr. McNair.

Capital Campaign Planned

A second consultant has also been retained to make recommendations to the vestry regarding a capital campaign beginning in 2012 to reduce the mortgage debt on our church building. Fr. McNair and the Vestry want to ensure that the incoming rector will inherit a financially secure church, without having to hit the ground running by raising money to service the debt.

Fees for the consultants will be paid through a bequest to Faith Church and are not part of the Operating Budget.

The final step of the transition process will be a selection or search phase.

Not Like a Corporation

A leadership change in the church is not like the changing of the guard in a corporation. In the typical Episcopal Church model, the rector leaves the church and an interim priest is appointed. All the while, a search committee, working with the Diocese of Northern California, is developing a candidate profile and making a selection.

The goal is to keep the church strong and healthy through the entire transition process. Fr. McNair says he plans to be active and present through the transition and the start of the capital campaign, and remain with us until the end of 2012.

The transition team will provide you regular updates on the process during Sunday services and in this newsletter.

Mary Higbee has agreed to serve as a chaplain during this time of transition. She is available to assist through times of stress or concern about the transition.

All of us, in our daily lives and service, recognize that change is not always easy. However, we are called to go forward in faith, confident that God will honor our prayers and wishes for a smooth transition for Faith Episcopal Church.

Mission Focus:  Thank You for your Support for Honduras

by Kent McNair

I would like to thank many members of Faith Episcopal Church for their generosity in supporting the church and the people of Honduras. As many of you know, I spent one month in Honduras this summer, spending money donated by you for their support (that was a lot of fun!!!!) Here's a list of where our support has gone this year:

  • Scholarships to 14 youths to attend High School (colegio).
  • While I was in Honduras, we gave money to build a beautiful little church in Suyapa Frontera (the same village we previously gave much money to for new roofs, floors, and stoves in most of the houses);
  • Paid for a caesarean and other medical expenses for a 13 year old girl from a small village who lives with her sick grandfather and 18 year old sister;
  • Painted another church;
  • Paid for Padre Francisco's gas for the month and two new tires;
  • Bought a new refrigerator for another church so they can sell cold drinks from their little pulperia;
  • and other support that I cannot remember.
  • Plus, we gave a check for over $5000 to the Bishop of Honduras to use as he saw fit!

Pretty cool. What a joy it is to share our wealth with our brothers and sisters in Honduras. I hope we can bring Padre Francisco back to Faith Church in 2012.

Lets keep it up!

A Note of Thanks

The gratitude of blessed moments lifts us to embrace our entire life as a gift.  Last Sunday, when Pastor Liz presented me with your generous gift was a blessed moment.  So blessed that I was overwhelmed with gratitude for all of you.  The words we use to express our appreciation are so bland, but it is all I got.  Thank You!
