The Best of the Retreat!

Part of what we want to provide to our kids, aside from an excellent academic education, is more opportunities to take risks, to fail, to build  resiliency and character - the retreat does all of these things - and like any academic or social education, the results are not always seen immediately - but we persist in teaching persistence and building all of the skills and attitudes needed to be successful both in and out of school.

                             Russ Klein, Head of School

On Monday, we departed by 8:45am with 131 students and 27 King David staff.  We were very fortunate as the weather that was initially predicted over the weekend passed through on Sunday, and we had  moderate days with periods of joyous warmth, other times with a cooling breeze and just rare sprinkles of moisture. Upon arrival, all of the students were given their room assignments, generally there were 8 people to a cabin, in four bunk beds.

With bags away it was off to the dining hall for a greeting from the camp director and some words of wisdom from Mr. Monchamp. After lunch on Monday, we played a game of 'capture the flag'  organized by the Grade 12 students.  All students were divided into four teams by colour,  with each team having students from all grades, and Grade 12 students as Team Captains. Then it was time to get busy.  The students separated into their activity groups.  These groups were organized by Grade - so there were 3 Grade 8 groups, 2 groups of each for Grades 9, 10 and 11, and one exceptionally large Grade 12 group.  There were also 2 KDHS staff with each group.   The students did the activities in their groups - the activities included canoeing, archery, orienteering, hiking, climbing, low ropes, high ropes, some arts activities and a school-based activity.

"It was a wonderful experience for me as I am new in the school and enjoyed being part of the Jewish community."

Anna, Grade 10

"I was amazed at how close I became with my classmates over the course of just a few days. I am so excited to be part of this school."

Matan, Grade 8

"It was a great start for me at this new school to bond with my new friends and feel the warmth of this King David Family."

Shawn, Grade 10

"Over the course of the retreat I had the chance to bond with new

classmates as well as have lots of fun and participate in great activities in the wilderness. The most amazing part was becoming friends with older students - you can't get this anywhere else."

Josh B, Grade 8

"At the retreat as well as bonding with other students I had the chance to meet and participate with the teachers of KDHS. While doing activities I enjoyed having the company and guidance of some of the older students and teachers."

Eytan, Grade 8

"I really enjoyed playing volleyball and relaxing with classmates and staff."

Lior, Grade 11

The video below will provide an idea of the fun and bonding that took place over the 3 days.

Shana Tova
The words of Unatanu Tokef are arguably the most moving and powerful words found in the liturgy of the High Holiday's prayers.  There is a feeling of powerlessness and total dependence as we read how our life is totally in God's hands.  And then something strange happens in the prayer.  "You will open up the Book of Chronicles - it will read itself, and everyone's signature is in it."

What is our signature doing in the book?  I can understand God's signature or God listing our names but what and why are we signing?

Using these words, Rabbi Yaakov Haber explains a very profound principle.  Not only are our actions in our hands but our fate and destiny as well. It is all in our hands.

It is clear to us that a person's physical health is very much dependent on a person's eating habits, exercise routine, and stress management strategy. We do not get "punished" by indigestion by eating the wrong food; we literally bring indigestion into us. It is simply a product of our life choice.

It is the same with our spiritual health.  We can choose to abuse or ignore it or take it seriously and honour it.  We can choose to sign on to a life that sees us becoming, healthier and holier, more sensitive, tolerant, peaceful honest, learned or anything we want.

We often pray for health, wealth and happiness but we must ask ourselves: "what do we want to do with health, wealth and happiness?"  When we decide that, then the choice is all in our hands.  It is just up to us to sign on the dotted line.

May we all be inscribed for a year of physical blessing and the knowledge how to use it in the appropriate way.

Uniform Reminder
All families are reminded that as of October 3rd all students must be in full compliance of our school uniform policy. This includes having all-black shoes, skirts of appropriate length (2-3" above the knee) and all required uniform pieces. Please ensure that your student is in the appropriate uniform as we want them all in class learning with their teachers and peers.  Families needing to order uniform items should contact Cambridge and Company immediately to ensure timely delivery. A copy of the KDHS uniform policy is included in the Parent Handbook and is available at the school office.
