Celebration 5772 Rocks the House!
|
On Tuesday night, the King David Atrium filled with proud families, teachers and students to honour student achievement in all subject areas. Thanks to the Fine Arts Department, the evening was filled with a very eclectic mix of entertainment!
 | |
Alex, the clown!
|
The evening began with a clowning performance by Grade 9 student, Alex and was followed by an improvised Commedia Dell'arte performance by Izzy and Shelly. Throughout the evening, our musical talent was on display and our students, led by the talented Mr. Seguin, rocked everything from Jimi Hendrix to Carole King! The evening closed with a look at our Grade 8 Art students' stop-motion animation videos which were fantastic, followed by the impressive King David Lip Dub video, which you can view on our website if you missed it!
Thanks also to Ms. Watson and her Foods volunteers for the delicious snacks throughout the evening, and of course to our dedicated teaching staff who worked together to make the evening such a success. It was very powerful to see every teacher come up and present their awards - it speaks to our strength and community as a school. And it was fun watching how proud our teachers were of their students, shaking hands, sharing a hug and posing for pictures.

Recently, while studying communication, the Grade 10 Planning class was lucky to have Terry Neiman present a few workshops on communication. Mr. Neiman, who teaches communication at SFU, gave us a university style lecture on the topic and ran us through various exercises to help us better understand the nuances of communication. Mr. Neiman explained how context can help us understand things which don't, on the surface, make any sense. He also talked about people's different perspectives, using physics as an analogy for communication. That may sound bizarre, but Mr. Neiman made his points clearly and articulately. He is obviously a master in his field. I think I can speak for all the Grade 10 students when I say Mr. Neiman provided us with a very engaging and informative lecture. ~ Sam K., Grade 10

Shakespeare Continues ...
|
This week in English class, as an end of unit activity, we presented our group performances on Macbeth. Each group chose their own scene and every member memorized their lines and wore costumes that suited their characters. Some saw their scenes with more of a serious and dramatic perspective while others interpreted their scene with more of a comedic approach. At first, I was nervous to show my scene to the class because I've never seen myself as much of an actress. I knew I wasn't an overly dramatic person but over time my nerves went away and I was able to enjoy my own and my classmates presentations. ~ Aliza, Grade 11

King David Students Attend Dennis Prager Evening
|
Fifteen students served as volunteers and had the opportunity to hear Dennis Prager address the Vancouver community.
Morris, Grade 10, an eager participant, shares his thoughts:
"It was very reassuring to hear Mr. Prager's support for the State of Israel. I was very pleased to hear such a strong supporter of Israel, having traveled there with King David in Grade 8 and having hosted Israelis during Grade 9. It is also very interesting to see such prominent supporters of Israel here in Vancouver. Having Mr. Prager here really brings to light some of fantastic things that the JNF has done over the past 60 years. It's great to be a part of it."

Hiking in Lynn Canyon
|
Last week, our PE 10 classes went hiking in Lynn Canyon. We had beautiful weather and strolled through the amazing trails, across the Suspension Bridge, past waterfalls and pools of glacier-fed streams. It was wonderful and so beautiful. After our hike, we ate lunch by some of the pools and were treated to some spontaneous moments such as some crazy American tourists jumping into the colder than 10 degree rapids, being serenaded by a tourist group of Polish choir singers, and a huge English Mastiff that weighed 220 pounds out for a walk! We also explored the a variety of West Coast edible plants along the trail and played a game of "Camouflage". ~ Carla Yaxley, PE Teacher

Athletics - A Spring Review and Thank you!
| |
Congratulations to the:
* Senior Girls Soccer Team for being named the league's Most Sportsmanlike Team by GVISAA.
* Senior Boys Floor Hockey teams who finished in 1st and 4th place at the annual Senior Lions Invitational Floor Hockey Tournament. The Lions repeated as Champions for the 3rd time in 4 years!
* Junior Boys Floor Hockey teams who finished in 2nd and 9th place at the annual Junior LGCA Lions Ball Hockey Tournament. Both Lions' teams showed great improvement throughout the season. Our Golf team, with nine members this year, had a very enjoyable season entering the Lower Mainland Independent Secondary School Golf league for the first time. The team played on many different courses including Langara, Riverway, Fraserview, Richmond Country Club, McCleery and the Vancouver Golf Club.
Special thanks to the Richmond Golf and Country Club for their support of our Golf team this year!
The Tennis team had a good, albeit brief (due to the rainy season), spring season this year. The Lions registered in the Lower Mainland Independent Secondary School Tennis League for the first time and experienced success.
Our two Ultimate Frisbee teams (Junior and Senior) entered the Lower Mainland Independent School Ultimate League and demonstrated excellent enthusiasm, passion, spirit, and sportsmanship throughout the season. Well done to everyone involved!
A special thank you to all our coaches - we could not achieve this without your support!
Carla Yaxley - Girls Soccer and Basketball
Natalie Moravek, Martin Ferera and Oded Jacob - Tennis
Liza Rozen-Delman and Naomi Youngson - Girls Basketball
Rabbi Stephen Berger and Noah Cantor - Boys Basketball

Meet our Athletics Director, David Amram
| In Grade 11, I decided that I wanted to be a Physical Education teacher. I was passionate about encouraging youth to be active through physically active games and activities.
I had attended Maimonides Secondary School for two years when it was located on Bailie Street and I remember distinctly that there were no extracurricular or intramural athletics teams back then. I decided at that point, that after pursuing my degree in Human Kinetics at UBC, I would return home to King David to grow and solidify the Athletics program.
As my 6th year at King David draws to a close, this vision is alive - we offer our students many opportunities from Volleyball to floor Hockey, Tennis, Golf and more. I feel blessed with a job that enables me to motivate and encourage students to reach their potential on and off the field. GO LIONS!
