This Issue: A Glimpse into Classrooms
In and outside the classroom, debate, dialogue, critical inquiry, and experimentation bring every lesson to life.  Students are challenged, supported and actively encouraged to reach their potential through a variety of academic, extra-curricular, athletic and community service opportunities..
Grade 11 Family Immigration Stories
"Education is simply the soul of a society as it passes from one
generation  to another."
                         ~ G.K. Chesterton

The Grade 11 students were assigned the task of finding a family member who could tell them an immigration story. Once identified, the students had to interview their relative and put together a video which is then shared with the class.

"We have all gained a great deal from this project and I am constantly amazed at the skills that the students exhibit."
~ Eleanor Braude, Jewish History Teacher

 King David Court of Law
Last week the Law 12 students participated in a mock trial to put their knowledge of criminal law and trial procedures into practice in a fun, practical way.  The case was presided over by his Honour, Judge Dean and involved an alleged assault of a high school shop teacher on a student.  Keeping the procedure moving was the court clerk (Carmel) and making sure everyone stayed in line was sheriff, Yuval.  The accused, Josh Howard (aka Jesse) was defended by the team of Ophir and Vivian with Justin and Claire as the Crown counsel trying to seek a conviction.

After the presentation of evidence and witness accounts of the incident (witnesses played by Cory, Eliana, Hillel, Sason, Jordan, and Jacob) the prosecuting and defense attorneys made their powerful closing arguments. The jury (Ben, Lexi, Adam, Talya, Samantha, Alexandra, and Emma) then adjourned and returned with a guilty verdict.  Jesse, sorry I mean Josh Howard, was sentenced to 5 months in jail followed by 3 months probation.

Senior Girls Soccer Team Makes the Play-offs!

The Senior Girls Soccer Team made it into the play-offs!  They had a great game out in Cloverdale on Wednesday night which ended in a scoreless tie and went straight to a shootout.  The shootout was so close that it took 11 shots from each team to make the decision before our girls emerged victorious!  The play-offs are next Wednesday, May 23rd in Ladner!

Good luck to the team:  Carmel, Samantha, Alex B., Abby, Anna, Mijal, Talya, Deborah, Alex F., Lior, Bayle, Galia, Mia, Mikaela, Gabi, Carly, Neeve  and Izzy

The Door is Open

I was very fortunate to be able to experience a morning volunteering at The Door is Open with a group of Grade 12 students and two parents. David, Ophir, Zeke, Eliana, Nathan, Aviv, Maya and Eliana worked tirelessly to accomplish the many tasks that go into feeding 200 plus in an hour! From making sandwiches to washing pots, they did everything with grace and a smile.  Knowing that King David produces young adults who know that helping others is at the heart of all we do should make us all so proud.

Psychology 12 Class Hears from an Alum

Rochelle

Rochelle Pullmer, Class of 2007, was a great speaker who delivered to our Psychology12 class a different view on the field of psychology. Through interesting case studies such as the 'HM Case' we studied memory and its connection to the brain and our bodies. She also shared her experience of writing her 4th year Psychology Honors thesis, and discussed in detail this topic with us. It's always great having a King David alum speak to us, especially when they share their knowledge on topics they're passionate about. Rochelle helped us appreciate the different applications of psychology in the day-to-day world.

Meet our Deputy Head of School, Alex Monchamp

Alex grew up in a small town in Ontario just west of Toronto. A fellow of infinite patience and unyielding hope, Alex has been a Toronto Maple Leaf fan since the early 1980's.

Throughout his high school years, Alex was an avid fan of the theatre and spent the majority of his time in the school's Drama room. After directing his first play in Grade 11, and intending to embark on a career in theatre after school, Alex's dreams turned slightly toward university when his high school Drama teacher suggested that he would be better suited to teaching.

After earning his BA and studying all things Shakespearean, he spent a year living in Scotland while he earned his degree in Education. Shortly after returning from his year away, Alex met his wife Karen and over the course of the following four years, they slowly migrated westward until arriving in Vancouver 11 years ago.

Alex joined the King David family back in 2001 as an English and Drama teacher. During his time as a teacher, he produced many memorable theatre productions including The Taming of the Shrew and The Importance of Being Earnest. In 2007, Alex moved to an administrative role in the school which he enjoys immensely. When asked about his long career at King David, Alex commented, "I wouldn't want to do this anywhere else."

In his spare time, Alex greatly enjoys playing with his dog, Nigel, working with his hands, and acquiring, what his wife would characterize as, "more tools than any one person should have". Adhering to his philosophy of "learning by doing", Alex has attempted different renovations, building furniture, and his most recent success, the 6 month construction of a new kitchen (see before and after shots below).
