Yasher Koach King David!
|
The Fraser Institute's annual secondary school rankings are out and King David has been ranked 12th in the province out of 280 schools.
While we know this is only one small measure of how a school is evaluated, we are proud to be so highly ranked for our core General Studies curriculum. In addition we proudly offer our students a rewarding Judaic curriculum rich in Jewish values, history and tradition. Where can you get both exemplary CORE + MORE? The only answer is King David!
The last 4 years has seen our ranking improve from 139th, to 62nd, and then to 18th, and now to 12th. For a school of our size, a community school servicing all students, this is truly amazing.
Virtually every school ahead of us is not a community school and student admission to these schools is based on test scores. It really is remarkable how we are doing on this measure because we know we are doing better than this on so many other incredibly important, but not as easily measurable, criteria.
I want to thank our students and teachers for their hard work, dedication to their studies, and everything they do to make our school the wonderful and special place to which we are all so pleased and proud to belong. ~ Russ Klein, Head of School

Yom Ha'atzmaut at King David
| The feeling in the morning from our students was awesome and the energy of the elementary school students was amazing all day long. The program kept us all entertained and everyone had such fun! Having The Beatles join us for Israel's 64th birthday was wonderfully fitting. Thank you to Shoshi Burton, who organizes this event every year - this was the best Yom Ha'atzmaut event ever by far! So many of our parents who were volunteering, commented on how this is what makes King David so special.

Grade 9 Trip to Washington, DC
|
"The Washington trip was not only an opportunity for experiential learning, it also provided the students with time to strengthen their connections outside of the classroom." ~ Alex Monchamp, Deputy Head of School Despite the yawns and half-closed eyes, 17 sleepy Grade 9 faces gathered together at YVR last Sunday for the Washington, DC trip. Everyone was bursting with excitement - even the teachers! We were part of one of the largest groups the Asper Foundation has ever hosted in DC and this made for a pretty lively experience. It was amazing to see how kids on very little sleep suddenly came to life when immersed in a room of 300 fellow adolescents.
Our trip included visits to the Lincoln, Jefferson, Iwo Jima, and Martin Luther King Memorials, the White House and many museums. At the Smithsonian Institute we stopped at the Air and Space Museum, the Natural History Museum and the American History Museum and we also got to see the Newseum..
 | | Enjoying the warmer weather at the Washington Monument | Whilst waiting for President Obama to leave the US Holocaust Memorial Museum, we took a walk to the nearby Washington Monument, an enormous obelisk built to honor the first US president. Back at the museum, our students really took their time to wind carefully through the many exhibits which take visitors chronologically through the events of the Holocaust starting with the rise of Nazism and ending with liberation. The permanent exhibit is an incredibly emotive experience. We had the honour of listening to the story of a survivor whose family had gone into hiding in Amsterdam during the war.

The Asper Foundation sure does know how to pack the highlights of DC into a tight schedule, but our Grade 9's have amazing stamina! Thanks to all for a memorable trip!

Grade 9 Food Students Feed their Teachers
| |
Last week Ms. Watson's Grade 9 Foods class treated a select group of teachers to a special lunch to demonstrate their excellent skills. Vegetarian lasagne and Caesar Salad were on the menu with brownies for dessert. The class ran a tight ship with students helping seat, serve and clean up after their guests. The food was delicious and it was a wonderful way to end the week!

Meet our English and Psychology Teacher!
| |
Anna-Mae Wiesenthal moved from Winnipeg six years ago where she taught English, French, and drama in the public school system. This is Anna-Mae's 25th year of teaching. At King David, Anna-Mae teaches English and Psychology.
As a student growing up in Winnipeg, Anna-Mae attended both public and private schools. Upon graduating high school, she spent a year in Israel attending a teacher's college. She returned to Winnipeg to earn a Bachelor of Arts in Native Studies and French, and then a Bachelor of Education, majoring in English and philosophy. Anna-Mae completed her master's course work with a focus on adolescent literature.
Her love of drama began in High school, where she performed in school musicals, and has continued on throughout the years, either by teaching drama, taking theatre workshops, or participating in community theatre productions. Anna-Mae loves learning and teaching with her students. "Students at KDHS constantly challenge me to see the material in new ways, and to look for ways to help them make meaningful connections to their lives through speaking, reading and writing. The classroom is an invitation for dialogue, a constant exchange of questions and points of view. I continue to learn so much from my students."
