Israel Through the Eyes of Our Grade 8 Students
The trip to Israel was an eye-opening experience. I met new friends who I hope to have forever. I hope very much that the Israelis will come to Canada so we can show them our culture too. Israel is a place I will always keep close to my heart.  ~ Tyler

This was my fourth consecutive year traveling with our students to Israel. It was another magical experience. I could tell you about it but I think the kids say things so much better than I ever could - please read on and enjoy!
~ Russ Klein, Head of School

With our Israeli hosts visiting Magen David Adom
Between the shopping, the sights, the activities and the people it was eleven days of pure fun. I created bonds with the Israelis that will continue to grow over the years. I will never take for granted how lucky I am to have been given the opportunity to have gone on such an amazing trip.  ~ Rachel
Gil, Tyler and Matty enjoying lunch next to the river at Har Vagai

On this much-anticipated trip to Israel I learned and experienced more things than I could ever express in words. From meeting and befriending the Israelis, to the most amazing food I have ever tasted - one thing stood out, the fact that our grade came together as one. Every person in the grade made a new friend, and came closer with their old ones.   ~ Bella

Zoe, Dara, Josha and Noga at Tel Faher

Everything I worried about before the trip, I didn't even have the time to think about them. I wish we could do it all again, it was such a huge success, and we all enjoyed ourselves
very much.  ~ Noga

As we got closer and closer to the bonfire, we could see large bright orange flames surrounding people talking and hugging. We walked through the large opening of a barbed wire fence that led us to the crowd. Israelis were yelling their names at us. Loud music was blasting from the stereo, and police sirens whistling in the distance. I was slightly overwhelmed by this greeting, but once the night was in stride I finally relaxed, sat around the fire, ate a hot dog and talked with many Israelis about our different life experiences. ~  Shane

Although Orr's family hardly spoke any English, they were somehow able to make me feel extremely at home. Orr would constantly check up on me to make sure I was having a good time, and her family's small gestures such as offering me a night time snack or asking if I had any laundry, made me feel very welcomed. I couldn't have asked for a better host and host family.  ~ Hana

At Jaffa (Tel Aviv is in the distance)
The North is absolutely beautiful and so are Tel Aviv, Jaffa and Jerusalem; each one has its own charm. It was like stepping into another world every time we went somewhere new.   ~ Jillian

I had an amazing time and couldn't have asked for or planned a better trip! We managed to accomplish so much in just 10 short fun- filled days! I wish I could go back today and visit all of the Israelis and all of the wonderful places we visited because I miss it all too much!   ~
Aria

As our Grade 8 group and I were heading to Ben Gurion airport to come home, I thought I hope it will not be another 14 years before I visit Israel again. The people, the culture, the atmosphere confirm why all Jews see Israel as our "homeland". Eighteen hours later we landed in Vancouver and the first thing I said to my parents, "Next year our Passover Seder must be in Israel."   ~ Matty
We Remember ...
Ms. Lilian Borak Nemetz shares her story during the Yom Hashoah assembly
אתם עדי נאם הי
You are My witnesses says the Lord
(Isaiah)

כשאתם עדי אני אל וכשאין אתם עדי אין אני אל

When you are My witnesses I am God, when you are not My witnesses I am not God
(Sifrei)

On Yom Ha-Shoah, Holocaust Remembrance Day, this week, our students had the honour of hearing from Holocaust child survivor and Warsaw Ghetto escapee Ms. Lilian Boraks Nemetz. Several weeks prior, our students attended the Vancouver Holocaust Education Centre exhibit "Janusz Korczak and the Children of the Warsaw Ghetto." Until the moment he perished, together with the 200 orphans under his care, Korczak selflessly and wholeheartedly loved and provided for his Holocaust children.

With the passing years, the number of living Holocaust survivors to give testimony has been greatly diminished, with children remaining the majority of witnesses. When these children are no longer with us, who will serve as witnesses?
