From the Land of Milk and Honey

"The kids were awesome again today - what we expect, but really nice to be able to say that they once again delivered.  Smiles and energy were abundant - complaints were few if any and they are just getting on with it as if they were all experienced travelers - which considering how tired they are, is truly impressive."

Pi Day at King David!

March 14th is a fantastically mathematical day. King David celebrated the party for the infinite, never-repeating number - the ratio of a circle's circumference to its diameter (and Einstein's birthday as well).

Tal T. and Ms Lane,
proud Math teacher!

On the afternoon of March 14 our students participated in pi-related activities and enjoyed a piece of pie.

A group of students accepted

the challenge and took part in a contest to see who could recite the most numbers after the decimal point!  Tal T, Grade 9, had memorized 216 decimal numbers and is now the proud recipient of an iPad generously donated by the Shiff family.  Thank you to the Shiff family for the inspiration and wonderful prize!

Thank you to PAC for supplying and serving the delicious pies!

Magen David Adom!
"This morning we had an in-depth view into the programs of Magen David Adom, its services and activities. Not only does it provide "first responder" service to all 101 calls in Israel, but it also provides much needed assistance around the world. It was a privilege to hear the stories from an MDA paramedic today".
                                                                                 Vivian G., Grade 11

Our Grade 11 and 12 students were privileged to hear 24 year old Israeli, Daniel Amzallag, first responder, ICU medic and instructor, discuss Magen David Adom and its various life-saving programs in Israel and around the world.

Meet our Head of School, Russ Klein!
Russ Klein was a teacher and administrator in Vancouver public schools for 18 years and has been King David's Head of School for the past 4 years.  Russ' passion was teaching Chemistry to Grade 12 students although the most fun he had in the classroom was working with the Grade 8s in both Science and Mathematics (their hands go up excitedly when you ask a question!).  Russ received both his Masters of Education degree (Educational Leadership and Administration) and his Bachelor of Education (Science) from the University of British Columbia.  His Bachelor of Science was granted by the University of Victoria (Chemistry and Microbiology) although he also studied at Queen's University and the University of Calgary to start and end his undergraduate work - how many people can say they attended four different Canadian Universities!

Russ experienced 2 extended travel periods during his university years - for 6 months in 1983 with time spent in South East Asia, Israel and Europe and a longer 18 month trip in 1987 - again in parts of South East Asia and Europe, Israel and Australia.  His time in Israel taught him that his destiny was not to work on a banana plantation and that scorpions really are scary looking.  What is also scary for Russ - and joyous as well - is being the father of 2 teenage girls. His eldest child studies in a French Immersion school while his youngest daughter is in Grade 8 at King David.

Sports News

The Spring Sports schedule has just begun and KDHS is proud to announce its first-time membership with the LMISUL (Lower Mainland Independent Schools Ultimate League) and LMISSAA (Lower Mainland Independent Secondary Schools Athletic Association).  This year KDHS has entered two coed Ultimate Frisbee teams, a coed golf team and a coed tennis team into new leagues, which increases our ability to play more games with a wider variety of schools during the Spring season.  KDHS has also just begun our 5th season of Senior Girls Soccer. Lastly, we are already competing in Floor Hockey with two junior and two senior teams.  We are proud to announce that almost half of our school is currently involved in extracurricular athletics, which is an amazing number!

Congratulations to the Junior and Senior Floor Hockey teams for games well played against Kings School last week.  All our teams look poised to do very well this year!

Come out and support our hockey teams, their next games are:
*    Juniors--Wednesday March 28th at the JCC at 3:15 and 3:50 versus West      Coast Christian School
*    Seniors--Wednesday April 18th at 4:20 and 5:00 at the JCC against
