Packing Mishloach Manot - The Power of Many

Grade 6 students from VTT, VHA and RJDS are welcomed by Rabbi Berger at King David High School last Thursday morning, where they gathered to help pack 1400 Mishloach Manot (gift packages for Purim) as part of the Greater Vancouver Jewish Day School Project.

Item by item the boxes were filled, then sealed, sorted, and bagged for collection. Yesterday drivers spread out across the Lower Mainland delivering the packages and performing the Purim mitzvah!

Remo Mastroprieri, Superstore Manager, joined Hodie Kahn, Mishloach Manot coordinator extraordinaire, to see the packing in action.

A special thank you to our corporate sponsors for donating packaging and food items: Superstore, Safeway, Mayers Packaging, Dan D Pack, and Bulldog Bag.
Smile, it's Purim!

Purim is the happiest of all Jewish holidays, when having fun is not only permitted, it is commanded. King David was certainly a joyous place yesterday!

Students gathered with faculty and staff for a community celebration which included a Megillah reading, student video presentations of the content of the Megillah, a Grade 12 Purim play, student music performances, a Purim costume contest and delectable hamantaschen and ice cream provided by our PAC. A joyous and happy Purim was had by all.

Thank you to PAC for all they do to make sure we have a great time and we are well fed too!

A Purim Message

A man dies and comes before God. "Where are your wounds?", asks God.

"I have none", says the man. "Why", responds God, "was there nothing worth fighting for".

Renowned South African writer and activist , Alan Paton (adapted)

Our tradition points out that in מגילת אסתר/Megillat Ester (the scroll of Ester) the name of God is conspicuous in its absence. Yet the presence of God, our Rabbis tell us, is alluded to by the protagonist of this scroll and the heroine of this Purim holiday, Ester (אסתר). Pointing to the Biblical verse in which God says: וְאָנֹכִי הַסְתֵּר אַסְתִּיר פָּנַי בַּיּוֹם הַהוּא, " I will certainly hide/ester (אסתר) My face on that day", our Rabbis indicate that the very presence/absence of God is dependant upon the action/inaction of the one bearing the name Ester/אסתר
