If it's February, it must be Tu Bi-Shevat!

"This is the first time I've heard about the Arava region, and it was very interesting to learn about all the plants and animals they have there. It sounds like a beautiful place and I would like to visit some time"                                                         Ben K., Grade 11

Ezra Revins and Micky Goldwein visited with our students to share with them Israel's efforts to help sustain and make flourish the unique, Central Arava, region between Beer Sheva and Eilat. Students learned about the challenges and successes of this region and the Tu Bi-Shevat initiative of "Adopt an Acacia" to further beautify and make bloom this part of Israel's desert area.

Grade 8 students also participated in a Tu Bi-Shevat workshop by the Shelichah Aviva Yerushalmi, from JNF central offices in Toronto. Rachel Pekeles remarked: "We were all put into different groups and in these groups we learned about how Israeli stamps tell stories of the history and land of Israel."

We all enjoyed special Tu Bi-Shevat treats made, from the 7 species of Israel, by our Foods students and were provided with special commemorative Keren Kayemet Le-Yisrael  T-shirts in honor of this special day marking the "New Year of the Trees".

After attending the assembly on Wednesday and hearing the informative messages from our two guest speakers, a group of Grade 10 students accompanied by Rabbi Berger shared the spirit of the holiday with the residents at the Louis Brier. They started their time together with songs and then spent time chatting and getting to know each other.

Today, a group of Grade 9 students (many of whom are graduates
of the JCC Preschool) joined Russ Klein at the JCC to assist the younger children with the planting of flowers in their new playground.

It was hard to tell which kids were having more fun - thanks to Rick Nelson, Executive Director of the JCC for this wonderful opportunity.

Mindcheck.ca - A Great New Online Resource

We would like to let King David families know of a great new online resource. We all take the mental health of our children very seriously and may, at times, not be sure if what are seeing (or how they are feeling) is just part of the typical teenaged experience or if we as the caring adults in their lives need to intervene.

Sports News.

Our Seniors played a basketball game against Eric Hamber on Tuesday night, (a school with 1600 students).  We were expected to lose by 20-30 points.  At the start it looked that way with Hamber jumping out to a 12-2 lead but our team played with heart, strength and good character and at a time we even took the lead.  before eventually losing by 4 points.  Parents who were there cheered wildly and told us that it was so dramatic and exciting and they would have paid (donations welcome!)

Guy H.  moves the ball up the floor.

Congratulations to our Senior team players, Guy H., Ben K., Jacob P., Mike L., and Sason R., and to Junior teammates Benny F., Max C., and Bram S who joined in this great game.

Thought - provoking Research Paper Topics.

Lexi B. hard at work.
The Grade 12 English students embarked on their first full-scale academic research paper this term. Acting as researchers, students were tasked with compiling research from a variety of sources including books, peer-reviewed scholarly articles, journals, and others to organize and present a well-supported argument. Their paper needed to pass the rigorous standards of MLA formatting and citations - a much needed skill that they will find valuable upon entering university and beyond upon graduation.

The Grade 12 English students tackled a wide variety of subjects for research and asked clear, thought-provoking questions for their arguments.

Meet Steve Hahn, English Teacher!
