Dr. Rick Hodes Makes An Impact!
| |
"The modest man standing in the front of the room, leaned into the microphone and read his last slide out loud. "Do what you can with what you have, where you are." -Teddy Roosevelt. With that, he walked off to the side of the room and left a large responsibility on the shoulders of the students at King David"
Vivian G., Grade 11

Dr Hodes' message engages all - young and old!
|
This Monday morning, King David had the honour of hosting special guest speaker Dr. Rick Hodes. Dr. Hodes is an American doctor who has lived in Ethiopia for over 20 years, treating tens of thousands of patients with heart disease, spine disease and cancer. He is the Medical Director of Ethiopia for the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee and is in charge of the health of Ethiopians immigrating to Israel.

Yannay K. surprises Dr Hodes with his questions
|
Dr. Hodes shared with Grades 8, 10 and 11 his inspiring mission of universal charity. He is a Jewish doctor currently working with Catholic nuns at Mother Theresa missions, saving the lives of Christians and Muslims alike. Dr. Hodes also shared with us a motto he lives by, spoken by Theodore Roosevelt: "Do what you can, with what you have, where you are." He told us that "you don't have to be a doctor in Africa to make a difference"; charity starts at home through keeping broad perspectives and living compassionate Jewish lives.
During his visit, Dr. Hodes was accompanied by Vancouver philanthropist Gary Segal who first met Dr. Hodes through a Federation mission to Ethiopia. The Segal Family was so inspired by Dr. Hodes that they went through their own rewarding experience by helping one of his patients, Tefsaye, underwent life-changing spine surgery at the world-class Vancouver General Hospital Spine Unit. Their son Justin Segal went on to start the Spread the Love project to build schools in Ethiopia. "It just shows what one kid can do," said Dr. Hodes. Grade 9 Students Get SACY
| |

This week, Grade 9 had a presentation from SACY: School Age Children and Youth - Substance Use Prevention Initiative. The program provides opportunities for discussion and education with the goals of preventing substance use, delaying substance use and reducing substance use related problems.
The Grade 9 students were very engaged by Gerry O'Donnell's presentation, talking about what drugs actually are, what they do, breaking down myths, and the effects of substance misuse on health and lifestyle. They also got into conversations about law, ethics and the pressures that teens deal with. All the students walked away with at least some new information. Thanks Gerry and SACY!

"After the visit to the criminal courthouse, Law class feels more real and the law book came alive." Dean M., Grade 12
On Monday January 23rd, the students participating in Mr. Gorski's Law Course visited the Criminal Courthouse on Main Street. They were greeted by Danielle Horwitz, Education Co-ordinator for the Justice Education Society of BC. She explained the process of cases heard in the courthouse, shared statistics and a glimpse of some of the cases they may encounter. She also told the students that the majority of offences tried in this courthouse were related to drugs, whether theft, violence or trafficking.
This experience was probably the most useful drug prevention program these students could experience. Carmel L. reflected, "The visit to the courthouse showed me the effects of drug abuse and seeing the direct result was quite eye- opening." The students entered different courtrooms and were able to observe the proceedings. "The proceedings were not as fast paced as I had imagined," commented Neta R. Eliana C. felt it was disturbing and interesting to hear the actual offender talk and listen to the judge address the offender. It was not just some story you hear in the news. The students were able to see the role of the judge in sentencing and the focus on rehabilitation of the criminals versus punishment.
The visit all tied into the material the students are in the midst of studying, including the factors that make up a crime and the specific offences in the criminal code.

VTT and King David Students Join Forces for RAC Week 2012!
| |
 | | Red Group shares plans |
Last Wednesday, our Grade 12 class had the pleasure of hosting Vancouver Talmud Torah's Grade 7 students to promote and share planning for Kind David's Random Acts of Chesed Week. From the moment they entered our school the atmosphere was incredible! VTT students were greeted by our extremely energetic Grade 12 class, festive music, and cotton candy! Their faces immediately lit up and everyone was so excited to interact and get to know one another. After a fun and dynamic game of "Mingle", Rabbi Siegel and Rabbi Berger told both grades inspirational stories of Chesed. The students then divided into 4 groups, colour-coded for each day of RAC week, with King David and VTT students combined. They continued with some hilarious ice breakers which made the younger students incredibly comfortable around our Grade 12 group. Finally, the senior students were delighted by the amount of participation and excitement the VTT students contributed to the brainstorming of Chesed ideas they would be leading in their school. Their energy and drive were fantastic and we look forward to working with them on common school events in the near future!

Candy Land Shabbat Dinner Was Very Sweet
| |
"It was a warm atmosphere, with everyone being so friendly and nice, it was like a big family,"
Leora S., Grade 9.
 | |
Working together to make it happen!
|
On January 13th, 2012, the Grade 9 students hosted a Candyland themed Shabbat dinner for all the junior grades (8, 9, and 10). It took a lot of planning, and almost a full week of preparing to create the best Shabbat dinner possible.
The Shabbat dinner turned out to be a blast. Everyone that attended loved it. The meal was delicious. Different pastas and sauces, Caesar salad, garlic bread ... and lots of it! All followed by an amazing ice cream buffet.
The dinner was very well done, and everybody had fun that night. It was a chance to continue getting to know students in the other grades, and deepen existing bonds. Eitan N., Grade 10 says, "It was a very creative and decorative event, the Grade 9s did a great job leading and planning. We are looking forward to having the Grade 8 class host us for Shabbat".
Following the dinner, Rabbi Berger kept us all enthralled with his inspirational storytelling and fun games! It was a great evening overall, and hopefully there will be more of these experiences to come.

Meet our School Counsellor: Nancy Parry!
|
After more than 30 years in the public school system, Nancy joined King David in 2006 as a part-time school counsellor! Nancy served as Department Head of Counselling at Eric Hamber for 13 years before retiring from the VSB. A graduate of the University of British Columbia, Nancy received a Bachelor of Arts in Mathematics and Psychology, a professional teaching certificate in Counselling and Mathematics and a Master's degree in Counselling Psychology. Nancy, a Vancouverite, and her husband, Malcolm Parry (the better known member of the family!) live on the North Shore where they raised their son. Nancy is the proud grandmother of two. A regular gym goer, Nancy is a firm believer that activity reduces stress. Working mainly with the Grade 11 and 12 students as they prepare to transition from high school and continue their post- secondary journey, Nancy's focus ensures that each student has the support and guidance they need to step into the next phase of their lives, wherever that may take them. Nancy works one on one with our graduating students to successfully navigate the increasingly difficult process of university applications. She ensures each student meets all required deadlines and has the appropriate documentation for each school. Nancy loves working with adolescents and derives great joy as she watches them discover who they want to be.
