Random Acts of Chesed Week

"Projects like this teach values, what being Jewish is about"

                               Brittni Jacobson,

Class of 2011, member of first RAC Week Steering Committee

The practice of chesed (loving kindness) is an integral part of Jewish tradition. Last February, King David High School students took up the challenge of putting a variety of categories of chesed into action as part of its inaugural Random Acts of Chesed (RAC) Week.

As a religion of action, not simply of faith, Judaism has many opportunities for personal growth through specific acts of chesed, according to RAC participants. As a tribute to selfless giving without direct reward, students decided to hold the week-long chesed festival, each day fo
cusing on a different element of life, with surprises for students and teachers throughout the school day.

KDHS Science Lab

KDHS Science 10 have been studying chemical names and formulas. Soon, they will study chemical equations, which show how elements and compounds combine to form new compounds. In this activity they burned solutions of ionic compounds and observed the colours the flames produced. The colour of the flame was different for each element burned. After, they then identified three mystery ionic solutions by comparing the colour of the flames to the solutions already tested.

Grade 9 Science students Noahm R., Mikaela F. and Leora S. observe the colour of each flame

Spirit Week

Tacky Tuesday

This week, the classrooms and halls of King David had an injection of extra colour thanks to Student Council's annual Spirit Week. For a $3 charitable donation for the week, students and staff dressed up each day according to a specific theme. On Monday students and staff dressed in the colours of their favourite country; followed by Tacky Tuesday, Pyjama Wednesday and Crazy T-shirt Thursday. On Friday, each grade was to come up with their own theme for the day. The grade with the most creative theme and most students participating were awarded the opportunity to decide which charity would receive the funds collected throughout the week.

Thanks to all members of Student Council for organizing the week and the fun lunch time activities!

Rina P., Aria S., Josha R., Rachel P. and Noga G. enjoy lunchtime games

Join us for Special Guest Speaker - Dr Rick Hodes

This Monday, January 23rd, we will have the honour of hosting the incredible Dr. Rick Hodes. Dr. Hodes is an American doctor who has lived and worked in Ethiopia for over 20 years. He is the Medical Director of Ethiopia for the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee and he works tirelessly in Africa to help those with heart disease, spine disease and cancer.

We are privileged to invite all students, parents, staff and community members to come hear Dr. Hodes share his incredible story.

Dr. Hodes will be accompanied by Gary Segal who is championing the Bring Back Hope event in April to honour the work of Dr. Hodes. Gary and Nanci Segal went through their own rewarding experience helping one of Dr. Hodes' patients undergo life-changing spine surgery at the world-class VGH Spine Unit.

Rabbi Berger Begins Alumni Program at UBC

"Even after graduating from the school KDHS alumni continue to ask great questions and to search for meaningful reasons and answers to understand life.  I want to help them to continue unlocking the secrets, insights and deep meanings of Torah."

                                                          Rabbi Berger

Our new alumni program will meet weekly to struggle with real life issues and the insights the Torah has to offer. This week was the first meeting and was very well received.

Stephanie M., Diana L., Yolanna Z. and Danielle S.

"It was such a good feeling discussing weekly parsha and how it connected to my everyday life at UBC, especially now that it is not something I get to discuss in my present studies."
                                                           Yolanna Z., Class of 2010

"I believe that a Jewish education is important. Continuing a Jewish education outside of King David has not been easy considering university is time consuming. Our weekly learning sessions with Rabbi Berger allows us to expand our Jewish identity and faith through Torah and discussion. I am happy to be part of this learning experience."
                                                            Stephanie M., Class of 2010

Meet our Physical Education Teacher: Carla Yaxley!
Carla was born and raised on the Sunshine Coast, before moving to Vancouver for high school where she met her future husband (yes, cheesy, but true!). In 2006, she completed her undergraduate degree at UBC, majoring in History and minoring in Spanish. She knew she wanted to be a teacher, so she went to Japan for a year and taught fun English lessons to elementary children. This experience reaffirmed her passion for teaching, as well as her love for travel and languages. She returned to complete her Education degree at UBC in 2008 before going back to teach English in Japan for one more year. Back in Vancouver, Carla has worked as a Teacher On Call in both Vancouver and Delta, teaching everything from Band to Woodwork and learning many lessons, such as how to be flexible and creative in the classroom!

Exercise and the outdoors have always been important aspects of Carla's life. She has many amazing memories of family trips that included kayaking, camping, cross-country skiing or just strolling by the river to watch the salmon return every year. Carla is so thankful that her parents enabled this love of nature and fitness and knows that she wouldn't have had some amazing experiences, such as climbing Mt Fuji or running half-marathons, without their inspiring passion. Carla started playing soccer at the age of 5 and has played, coached and been an avid fan of "the beautiful game" ever since. This year alone, Carla has had many amazing experiences with soccer including playing on a fun Division 1 Women's team in Vancouver; coaching the King David Senior Boys' Team  (and looking forward to the spring season with the Girls!); volunteering with the Portland Homeless Street Soccer teams that represented Canada in the Homeless World Cup in Paris this past summer; and watching Barcelona play at home in their stadium, the Camp Nou! Besides soccer, running, swimming, hiking and volleyball, Carla is also keen to try new activities and had a great time paddle-boarding in the summer and snowshoeing in the winter in our beautiful city last year.

She loves teaching PE and being active and having fun each and every day! Carla truly believes that everyone can find some aspect of Physical Education that will challenge and inspire them and she is hoping that all of the Grade 8, 9 and 10 girls at King David will have some great memories and develop lasting connections through daily physical activities and fieldtrips during the 2011-2012 school year.

Carla Yaxley enjoying the snow!
