The Grade 10 PE classes had a wonderful Snowshoeing field trip to Cypress Bowl .  The weather was beautiful and the scenery was gorgeous.  The students had a great fun snowshoeing, touring the mountain, sliding down some hills, camouflage tag, and lots of snow play! The tour took the students all the way to the upper lodge and then back to down to the base of the mountain.  We saw some wonderful wild-life including grey jay birds, yellow cedar and white pine trees.  It was an amazing experience!  Ms. Yaxley and Mr. Amram had a blast leading the group!

Up we go!
Adina L. and Ms. Yaxley enjoy the view.

Michael S., Benny F., Sam K., Noah B., Mr. Amram and Bram S. begin the tour.

Gift of Giving: Homeless Donations at Downtown East Side

When Amir W. offered a homeless person a coat donated by one of our families his reply was, "Thank you very much, and bless you, my coat will do, this is a fine coat and someone else more in need can use it".

Our students collected and personally delivered much needed socks, hats, scarves, gloves and coats to the homeless on the east side. In addition they made several hundred sandwiches which they distributed as well, together with canned food items donated by our families. In their gift of heartfelt giving our students experienced the joy of meaningful receiving.

The group (left to right), who engaged in this important mitzvah of ma'achil re'evim (feeding the hungry) are: Matty F., Mr. Amram, Yannay K., Anna B., Liza N.,
Nicole I. and Rabbi Siegel.
Not in the picture:  Amir W., Zeke B., Aviv M. and David R. who helped prepare the sandwiches

Meet Our King David Board
It is with pride that King David High School announces the members of the 2011-2012 Executive and Board of Directors.

Our school is a community of individuals working together to create an exceptional educational environment.  At King David students, administration and staff, parents and families, donors and community all strive together to define excellence in Jewish high school education in Vancouver.

The Board serves to give voice to all of these interest groups, moving the strategic vision of the school forward and ensuring financial viability.   The board is organized along portfolio lines in order to more effectively support the administration, deal with the complexities of governing a high school, and involve more stakeholders in setting the strategic focus of the school.

Each portfolio chairperson oversees a committee of parents and non-parents that meets regularly and works with the administration and staff to help define goals and implement strategies.  Each chairperson then reports monthly to the entire board, and important issues are discussed and voted on at monthly board meetings.

We are privileged this year to have a first-rate board of committed, hard-working volunteers who are dedicated to improving every area of the school.  We invite you to get know these individuals and their portfolios through the snapshot biographies available by clicking on each name.  Board member biographies are also posted on the school website.

We are always looking for new committee members.  If you are interested in joining a committee, please contact the committee chairperson directly.

Together, we are educating the future of Jewish Vancouver.

Debating Club
Members of the KDHS Debate Club met with the UBC Debate Club representative/coach to discuss general debate strategies. He introduced the students to his method of constructing an argument, and explained to them what the UBC debates are like, and how our debate structure differs from theirs.

The group then discussed how what he had introduced to them could be applied to the High School Debates that will take place here at King David on March 1st. The students found the meeting highly beneficial, particularly to be exposed to a different method of debating and get tips from a person who's very experienced at a very difficult form of debate.

It was the first meeting of the debate club, and the club's future, especially after this meeting, looks good.

Another KDHS Volunteer Program
Eight students headed off to the Kimount Boys and Girls Club in December for an orientation meeting - in anticipation of joining KDHS' volunteer program. Over a period of nine weeks, students will help out at Kimount with after-school programs, designed for students attending Mount Pleasant Elementary School. Programming includes physical activities, homework support, art, games and leadership. Following last year's highly successful pilot program with four students, KDHS is proud to be sending double the number of students this year. For those students and parents interested in learning more about the program, please contact Ms. Oberlander.

Meet our Jewish History Teacher: Eleanor Braude

Eleanor Braude began her Canadian teaching experience in 1992 as the founding principal of the Richmond Jewish Day School. Since then she has taught Jewish history at Talmud Torah and the various incarnations of King David High School.

Eleanor graduated from the University of Cape Town with a Bachelor of Social Science degree and a post graduate diploma in teaching. She completed a 2 year program at the Pacific Coast Family Therapy Training Association.

Her passion for Jewish History resulted in  her receiving the Grinspoon - Steinhardt award for Excellence in Jewish Education. Eleanor enjoys travelling and has been fortunate to have visited many countries in Europe, where she has made a point of visiting Jewish sites. She has also travelled in India, China and North Africa.

Eleanor has accompanied King David students on trips to Israel and Washington. She feels it is a great privilege to be with students who are experiencing Israel for the first time.

For many years Eleanor has prepared students for the Federation Debate competition and is proud of the students' accomplishments. Eleanor is constantly learning from the students and really enjoys the positive energy that they bring to her class.
