Application for 2012 admission available now!
Why choose King David?
You should choose King David because you want a high school that is as much about excellence in education, as it is about community and family. You should choose King David because you want a small school where you can get the support to succeed, the values to guide and the confidence to lead. You should choose King David because you want a school that vibrates with the energy of fellow students seeking knowledge, exploring their Jewish heritage -- and having fun doing it. No other high school in the province will challenge the cultivation of talents or interests in the intellectual, artistic, spiritual and physical realms - along with the Jewish self.
Click here to download an application or contact the admissions office (604) 263 9700 x 202 / dappelbaum@kdhs.org and a package will be mailed to you. Applications are also available at the VTT and RJDS school offices.
Due date: February 3, 2012

Candy Land Shabbat Dinner Invitation
|
After a very successful Shabbat dinner for the students of Grades 8-10 last November, hosted by our Grade 10 class, the Grade 9s would like to reciprocate and host one too. The theme is Candy Land and all activities will be related to a sweet theme. We are planning another outstanding experience where students from all three grades will have another opportunity to socialize and get to know each other, therefore, we would really like to have all students (only) attend. Please register by January 6th so we can have enough time to shop and plan accordingly. Click here to download form.

Developing Financial Sustainability
| The value of the King David experience is evident in the faces of our students. Enthusiasm, joy and optimism are nurtured here in a learning community which encourages students to develop their personal interests and gifts and inspires them to reach their potential. Tuition and fees do not cover the full cost of a Jewish day school education. As with all independent schools, King David relies upon donations to meet its operating costs.
We would like to take this opportunity to personally thank our parents, grandparents and community members who have generously provided King David with the financial support required to meet our student and program needs.
Some highlights from our latest fundraising efforts:
The Casino Royale event proved to be a successful fundraiser for King David and raised over $50,000. Thank you to our honorary chairs, co-chairs, sponsors, attendees and auction buyers for making the event a memorable success.
 | |
KDHS Alumni, Igal, Bar and David thank the community for supporting King David at the Casino Royale event.

In December 2011, King David proudly received the Partnership for Excellence in Jewish Education (PEJE) 2011 Challenge Award in the amount of $25,000. King David was selected by PEJE as one of 27 winners from 141 applications received from Jewish Day Schools throughout North America. The award recognizes schools that drive increased revenue through innovation in fundraising strategy.
More great news came in December as King David received a generous grant in support of its Drama and Music Programs from the Betty Averbach Foundation. Thank you to the generosity of the Foundation and its leadership.
While great efforts have been made through the leadership of the board and staff, we still need the support of our community to ensure we continue to grow and build our school and our community for the future.

"We would like to thank you for your personal efforts in bringing joy to the children of Rwanada. Thank you for hosting us and for your support".
Grace Rwanda Society
Our students were so moved by the words and story of Yannick Tona, a Rwanadan Tutsi who survived the Rwanadan genocide. They organized a student fund raiser to help support the efforts of the Grace Rwanda Society to build bridges of understanding, partnership and acceptance among the youth of their community, both Tutsi and Hutu. The Society, which sponsors the "Ripples of Change" program had visited KDHS in October, 2011.

With the onset of winter, a warm hat, a durable pair of socks and protective gloves are essential for the homeless of our city.

Next week, our students will be distributing these much needed items to the homeless. Please join us in the mitzvah of malbish arumim, clothing those in need, by bringing in a warm and useable pair of socks, a hat and/or gloves from Monday to Wednesday of next week.
Together we hope to provide a warming of soul and body for those less fortunate than we.

Welcome Jordana!
| KDHS is delighted to welcome Jordana Corenblum to our Counseling Team while Lu Winters completes her maternity leave. Jordana is well known to us at King David offering programs to our students through community agencies. She will support Nancy Parry by working with our students and parents, assisting with our counselling program needs including programming and relationship building in its many forms. Generally, Jordana will be at KDHS Wednesday through Friday mornings. We are very fortunate to have her join us.

Jordana and Samson

Jordana Corenblum moved to Vancouver to attend UBC. After graduating with a BA in Psychology, she began her career in youth work as the Youth Director at Beth Israel. In her 3 years at this position, as well as her 8 years with TAG Community High School, Jordana was very fortunate to get to know many of our community's young people. In recent years, Jordana has been working overseeing after-school programs for vulnerable youth in inner-city schools, running peer-to-peer prevention programs, providing care at the Maples Adolescent Treatment Centre and offering one-to-one support and intervention to high-risk youth. Jordana is also a Sexual HealthEducator and a facilitator for SOLOS (the Safe Online Outreach Society). With over 12 years of experience working with people of all ages, abilities and backgrounds, she prides herself in being able to adapt to the specific and diverse needs of all groups and individuals. Jordana is looking forward to joining the KDHS family, to once again work with youth in the Jewish community and offer our students opportunities for personal development and support.

Alumni Highlights: UBC Faces of Today 2012
| The Faces of Today Award works to recognize outstanding individuals involved in the various facets of the UBC community. Established in 2010 by the SLC Planning Committee, the Faces of Today are featured at the Opening and Closing Ceremonies of the Student Leadership Conference through a collection of videos and photos, in the aim of invoking inspiration and spreading the message of their leadership experiences to all the delegates of the conference.
We are so proud of Aviva Rappaport (Class of 2009) who was recognized as a Face of Today 2012! Aviva is currently in 3rd Year, Faculty of Land and Food Systems.
Aviva coordinated Shinerama UBC this fall, which successfully raised over $30,000 for Cystic Fibrosis research. Aviva not only worked hard to get the student body involved for "Shine Day," but was seen actively fundraising for Shinerama during the summer months as well. In her women's fraternity, she acts as Director of Scholarship and acts as a role model for others through achieving a balance in her life of academics, leadership, and philanthropic activities. As Director of Scholarship, she successfully reads the needs of her chapter and finds creative ways to inspire others to strive for greatness in their studies.

Sports News
| Congratulations go out to the Senior Boys Basketball team for defeating LGCA on Tuesday by a score of 55-25. Sason R. and Ezequiel B. played their first games of the season, and made an immediate impact on the game. The Seniorr Boys then took their 3-3 record and hosted Kitsilano Blue Demons "B" team, in a thrilling game that had several lead changes. Guy H. made an incredible 3 point shot with 1 minute remaining, and then the defense stepped up. The Lions ended up winning the game by a score of 60-58. Guy H. was named the game's MVP scoring 27 points, while Michael L. added 20 points of his own. Well done, team! King David would like to know which intramural sport our students would like to participate in next. Voting forms are posted outside Mr. Young's office (Room 222), for students to indicate their choice. The choices are street hockey or futsal, both fun sports that had large interest in the past. The votes will be tallied on Wednesday January 11th, and the results announced the following day.
