Social Studies - A Study in Chocolate
| As the finale to a unit on the early middle ages, the Grade 8's were asked to produce a project that signified a certain aspect of one of the societies we had been studying. The type of presentation and the materials to be used were left to the creativity and imagination of the students. Wow!!! Did they ever produce! Paper, clay, wood, plastic, gem stones, glitter were among the materials used to produce a vast array of creations that showed the knowledge and creativity of the students at their best.
One of the favourite materials used was cake and icing! Who knew that the Vikings most common building material was chocolate? Taste tests proved that Viking longboats, among other things, are delicious!
Mr Gorski says, "My hat is off to the Grade 8's and their efforts. Happy holidays to everyone!"

Snow Tubing Fun before Winter Break!
| Friday, December 9th all Grade 8 and 9 students arrived at school in their colourful assortment of warm winter layers. They could barely contain their excitement before boarding the big yellow school bus along with Mr. Amram, Mrs. Yaxley and Ms. Ralph. Mr. Kedar drove us across the city and up to Cypress Mountain safe and sound.
It was an absolutely perfect winter day and after some no-nonsense safety pointers by the Cypress Snow-Tube expert on how to make giant chains of inner-tubes travel down the hill together without any danger, the students rushed off the bus in search of the fastest tube and the first spot in line for the rope-tow! Others chose to skip the line entirely and just ran up the steep and bumpy hill, pulling their tube b ehind them. Great exercise! At the top, friendly Cypress staff helped organize groups of students into human-innertube-chains. Then they would make sure the group got going, launching them down the hill, spinning and sliding and screaming all the way! Groups of 2 or 3 soon turned into groups of 5, 6, 7, or 10. At one point almost the entire Grade 9 class formed a giant web and went down together in one massive, whirling blur of smiles and squeals!
After about 2 hours on the mountain it was time to head back to school. We loaded back onto the big school bus and chatted, sang or slept on the way back. In one word, this day was truly "awesome"!" Thanks to Mikaela F. for taking photos!

| The David Project Class Welcome a Visitor |
Anat Uzzan, from The Jewish Agency for Israel based in Toronto, spent time with the students in the Grade 12 Israel Advocacy class to discuss Israel with them.Ophir P., a member of the class was inspired by the discussion. "Anat Uzzan spoke to us about Israel and the policies of the country. She spoke about being a Jew in Israel and what it means to be an Israeli. We also discussed available programs in Israel for young Jews in the Diaspora." "Meeting the students at King David was my first encounter with the Vancouver Jewish Community. I was pleased to have a profound discussion with the students that showed knowledge, involvement and love for Israel. The school and class are inspiring." Anat Uzzan, Aliyah Shlicha for Canada

Yoga
|
The last week before winter break the Grade 8/9 and 10 PE classes have been taking some time for self-reflection, relaxation and stretching by practicing yoga with an excellent instructor, Nicole Fowler, who has done her yoga training in Costa Rica and is now teaching yoga classes here in Vancouver. It has been a fun experience, with some students calmly striving to achieve peace and tranquility while others are challenging themselves just to balance and not topple over! It has been great to see how we are all different in our strength, flexibility and comfort with the practice of yoga and to reflect on how this is a wonderful thing and we can each aim to challenge our own selves. Along with all of the other benefits, our classes have certainly enjoyed a good amount of healthy giggling too ... especially with some of the moves such as "Tree-Pose", "Warrior 1, 2, 3", "Child's-Pose" and a real crowd favourite, "Happy Baby"!!! Who knows, maybe there will be some yoga taking place in your homes over the winter break!?!

Meet Julie Lane, Math Teacher
| "I strive to instil in students an appreciation of Mathematics and a desire to do their very best, even when the going gets tough!"
Julie had her first taste of teaching when she was in junior high school. When her brother, a junior high school teacher at the time, was marking tests, he would let her help. She honed her check-mark skills marking multiple choice sections. Then, in high school, three teachers played a huge role in her post secondary choices. Her Math, Biology and Physical Education teachers, each in their own way, brought a level of dedication, caring and pure joy at being in the classroom/gymnasium that was inspirational, and because of them, Julie knew that education would be in her future.
Julie chose a university program that would allow her to study and train in all three areas. She completed a Bachelor of Science Degree in Physical Education with minors in Math and Biology at St. Francis Xavier University. Julie remembers the first Math class that she ever taught. It was during her first round of practice teaching and she was doing a Grade 11 Math class. The class went very well and she never looked back! Julie has taught at both boarding schools and day schools in New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Quebec and British Columbia. Teaching Mathematics has been the backbone of her career, having taught Math every year with a little Biology, Junior Science and Physical Education on the side!
After ten years in boarding schools, Julie took a break from teaching and worked as a Fitness Supervisor at the Canada Games Aquatic Centre in Saint John, NB. During that year, she taught various fitness classes, aquasize, seniors fitness, pre-natal fitness and weight training. It was a great year but she really missed the classroom and the following year, she was back in front of the class doing what comes naturally!
While at Bishop's College School in Lennoxville, Quebec, she spent several years as a civilian officer with the Cadet Corps. The BCS Cadet Corps is the oldest in the country (CC#2) - CC#1 does not exist any more! She was the Quatermaster in charge of all things military related - uniforms, boots, rifles, cannons, ammunition and paper work (oooooh, the military paper work??!). The end of every school year was topped off with a Cadet Inspection, a truly spectacular production entirely put on by the students (after much training!!).
Julie is now in her 33rd year of teaching and loves being a part of the King David community.
