oCasino Royale Evening - A Great Success!
| |
What an evening! Thank you to the community for coming out and supporting King David. The event was a unique opportunity to enjoy an evening of fun games, delicious food, great silent auction items and good friends. Thank you to all the wonderful parents and volunteers who helped in the kitchen, solicited and wrapped Silent Auction items, and created the exceptional ambiance.
Opening the evening with her beautiful voice was Shasha K. (Class of 2010) followed by Jacqueline N. (Grade 12) on the piano. The food and drinks were prepared by King David alumni and students with Kristy Watson, our Foods teacher, and the dealers were King David staff, family and community members.
Thank you to our Honourary Chairs, Marie Doduck, Cathy Golden and Bernice Carmeli for sponsoring the evening in memory of their daughter and sister, Sheryl Michelson Young nee Doduck z"l, who was instrumental in organizing the first King David Casino Royale in 2006.
Finally. thank you to Laurie Zlotnik and Reisa Schwartzman, the event co-chairs, for their leadership in creating such a wonderful event!

| Igal R. ( Class of 2009) works alongside Jed S. ( Grade 10) and David K. (Class of 2006) to prepare the delicious food!

Group One Funding Comes Through!
| |
King David High School, along with Richmond Jewish Day School, Pacific Torah Institute and Shalhevet Girls' High School was recently approved for Group One provincial funding.
Together with previously qualified Vancouver Hebrew Academy and Vancouver Talmud Torah, this completes the roster of all local Jewish schools now eligible for enhanced government funding. After tuition fees, the provincial government is the biggest funder of Jewish education in the city, followed by school fundraising and then federation grants.
It is no small thanks to the efforts of Ari Shiff and David Sacks, working together with administrators and groups from the Jewish day schools, that this collaborative initiative has been successful. The achievement of Group One funding across the city is yet another example of how all the schools have been working together to support each other.
The total amount of Group One funding secured was $280,000, or approximately $1100 per student for the 2011-2012 school year. A similar amount per student will be available in every future year for each school, depending on enrolment. An added benefit of the additional government funding is a proportionately increased tuition tax receipt to parents.
This added funding helps to support the financial viability of King David and all our community day schools and allows each school to continue to invest in improving its quality and breadth of education. Improving quality drives increased enrolment, which in turn increases the government grant, which circles back to create a healthy cycle of continuous improvement, growth and funding for our schools.
As wonderful as this funding is, it is important to recognize that this enhanced government assistance, together with Federation grants and tuition fees still does not equal the actual cost of Jewish day school education. Fundraising is still critical to ensuring our community schools can continue to operate and grow.
Yasher koach to Ari and David for spearheading this important initiative, and to Russ Klein and Sandy Jorgensen; Cathy Lowenstein and Mark Maibauer (VTT); Shay Keil, MJ Brown and Shuli Ben Moshe (RJDS); Rabbi Dovid Davidowitz and Louise Beaton (PTI and Shalhevet), and Meyer Mattuck (VHA) for their assistance with this effort.

Breathe and Relax!!
| |
Life creates stresses for us all! To assist our students deal with the challenges they face as they decide where their journey will take them post high school, the Psychology 12 students invited Elana Epstein to talk to them about managing stress through breathing.
Abby J., Grade 11, shared her response to the technique ..
"The one word Elana wanted us to really get out of her presentation was PAUSE. When we're stressed we need to pause, take a step back, re-evaluate the situation and take deep breaths. She taught us that knowing how to breathe properley does calm you down and will relieve stress! Elana had us breathe calmly for five minutes to see how we felt afterwards. We all felt that Elana's presentation was extremely effective annd we will all take something away that will help us cope with stressful situations throughout our lives."

Coming up: Random Acts of Chessed Week (RAC)
| This week, Grade 12 students started organizing the second annual Random Acts of Chesed week. With animated discussion and great excitement, the planning for this week of kindness, which will take place February 20th to 24th, has begun. Each day of the week will be dedicated to spreading chesed to oneself, friends and family, the community, and the earth. On Tuesday, four Grade 12 students visited Vancouver Talmud Torah to introduce Random Acts of Chesed week to the Grade 7 classes, and to help them find ways in which they can promote acts of chesed in their own school.
Get ready, because this February, RAC Week will be a blast! And don't forget, KINDNESS IS CONTAGIOUS, LET'S SPREAD IT ALL AROUND.

Grade 8 Fine Arts Showcase - Drama
| This week Grade 8 and 9 Drama students showcased their final performances for the term to an audience of fellow Arts students. Students have been learning about the origins of Theater with a special focus on Greek Tragedies.
In small groups the students were able to choose a Greek myth or tragedy to transform into their own modern-day version. An added challenge was to perform their plays in an arena-like stage setting, similar to the performance spaces used in ancient Greek times.
Students also had to include some dialogue as a Chorus, as in traditional Greek Theater, where the actors spoke and moved in unison. Rising to the challenge, the Drama cohort showed off so me excellent talent!
Grade 9 Drama student Mia K. and Grade 8 student Gil A. during their performances.

Kol Halev Performance Ensemble presents their holiday show, "Hanukkah in Chelm", this December - and King David teachers, parents and students are involved!
In "Chelm", the villagers think it would be wonderful if Hanukkah lasted all year long, but soon discover that you can perhaps get too much of a good thing. There are original songs, and lots of dance numbers - it's fun for the whole family!
