Science News at KDHS!
This term in Ms. Tess Gardiner's Science class, pop-bottle ecosystems were built to observe the interactions between living and non-living components in the environment. The students built their own ecosystems and came up with questions that could be answered through observations. They then observed the pop-bottles for a 10 day period and then each group presented their findings to the class.

Isaac and Shain had one of the most interesting observations. They started with 13 earthworms and two beans and ended up with 42 worms, 15 aphids and two large bean plants!

Sari and Rachel with their ecosystem.
Benny and Daniel record their observations

The Door is Open!
Over the past few months our students have been volunteering at The Door is Open and Mission Possible on the downtown East side. The experience has been profound for all who have been and many are eager to go again.

We are inviting parent volunteers to join our students and staff feed the homeless at The Door Is Open throughout the school year. Parents will receive 3 PPP hours for their time. The dates listed below are currently available and if you are interested in assisting us in our community service, please let Lisa Stibravy know via email. You are asked to drive the students to The Door is Open, participate in preparing and serving the food, and then drive the students back to the school. If you are interested in participating in this project, please indicate your desired date(s) and how many students you can take with you. Your date will be confirmed and the necessary details and directions provided. A teacher will accompany the students on each visit.
The experience should be from 9.15 am and we should be back at school by 12:20 pm.

Special Olympics. Special Students!
"I cannot even begin to express how grateful we are to have Ben and Yolanna!  From the first day they both stepped up and fit beautifully into their roles."
                                                     Coaches, Katherine and Mary

Ben, Grade 11 and his sister, Yolanna, Student Council Co-President, Class of 2009, are 5-Pin Bowling volunteers for Special Olympics BC Vancouver! They have committed one night per week to their volunteering and both have shared how much they enjoy the opportunity!

Special Olympics BC (SOBC) Vancouver is a volunteer non-profit organization dedicated to providing opportunities for individuals with intellectual disabilities to become productive and respected members of society through sports training and competition. Both Ben and Yolanna  have been involved in SOBC Vancouver for a number of years and have connected with the athletes and supported them in a sport about which they are passionate.

Grade 8 Fine Arts Showcase - Music and Visual Arts
This week the Grade 8 Music and Visual Arts students presented a showcase of their work to their fellow Grade 8 students.  Music students presented two songs, Foster The People's "Pumped Up Kicks" and the classic sing-along "Lean On Me".  Grade 8 Visual Arts students also showcased their fantastic stop-motion animation clips.  The showcase really demonstrated the amazing talent in this year's Grade 8 group!

Sports News
The Junior Boys basketball team defeated WPGA in their regular season opener this past Tuesday by a score of 57-47.  Max Chark was named the game's MVP and the team demonstrated effective teamwork and huge potential.  On Wednesday, the Lions played 2 games and defeated the Lord Byng Grey Ghosts in the Juvenille division by a score of 40-23, where Remey Kier was named the game's MVP.  In the Junior division, the Lions were led by MVP Tal Tanne who double doubled in the 57-34 victory.  The Junior Boys have opened up their season with an impressive 4 straight wins.

The Senior Boys basketball defeated Waldorf on Wednesday in their regular season opener by a score of 59-21 led by top scorers Michael Linshits and Guy Hayn.  The Senior Boys are now 2-0 thus far this season.

We are extremely excited and proud to announce that our Senior Girls Basketball team is back in action once again.  The Lions took on a tough BCCA squad, but showed a lot of teamwork and resilience.  Led by top scorer Izzy Khalifa, the Lions fell to BCCA by a score of 46-26.  The girls show a lot of potential this year and we look forward to seeing them grow and gel together!

The Miami Heat intramurals basketball team defeated the teachers Oklahoma City Thunder team in thrilling fashion on Monday, winning by only 2 points.  The winning team included Jacob Pawer, Solly Lazar, Ben Zlotnik and the league's MVP Guy Hayun.  The trophy is now being engraved, well done boys!

"Hanukkah in Chelm"
Kol Halev Performance Ensemble presents their holiday show, "Hanukkah in Chelm", this December - and King David teachers, parents and students are involved!

In "Chelm", the villagers think it would be wonderful if Hanukkah lasted all year long, but soon discover that you can perhaps get too much of a good thing. There are original songs, and lots of dance numbers - it's fun for the whole family!

Featured in the cast are King David teacher Anna-Mae Wiesenthal and student Claire Riback, plus parent Gary Lazar. Our Digital Assistant Jeremy Festinger assisted Kol Halev behind the scenes, and five of King David's art students contributed an impressive papier-mache fish!
