Open House Night!
| This week the King David family invited community members to experience the wealth of opportunities available to students at the school. The evening included an informative presentation in the atrium detailing the many successes of both current and past students of the school, presented by David R, 2011- 2012 Student Council president and last year's president, Max J, currently attending UBC's Sauder School of Business. This was followed by student-led tours of the classrooms and facilities of KDHS. Delicious appetizers were prepared by our Home Economics department and delivered by enthusiastic servers. The evening was a great success and a wonderful opportunity for potential KDHS students to witness the abundance of opportunities available in the school. Thank you to the students, faculty and parents for all you do to make the evening so successful!

UWO potluck dinner group helps feed London residents.
Last spring, Harrison Glotman invited his sister, Becky, and her friends over for Sunday supper. With Becky in her first year of studies at the University of Western Ontario and living in a student residence, Harrison thought it would be a good chance for the group to have a good feed. The one dinner then turned into a weekly affair, which then developed into a chance to help the broader London community.
"We met around eight or nine times and we realize how fortunate we were," Harrison said, adding there was so much food left over, they thought something had to be done. While many ideas were passed around the table, Harrison said the group agreed on creating Sunday Funday, a club that gives students the chance to meet for a weekly potluck dinner, which also functions as a collection zone for the London Food Bank.

Feeding the Hungry!

This week, King David added to its many volunteering initiatives with a student-led program which will see our students directly helping those in need. Zeke, a student in Grade 12 is assembling students each week to contribute to giving out sandwiches to the homeless in Vancouver's downtown east side. In this first week, a group of 8 students signed up to participate; each donated money toward the cost of making the sandwiches. Once the ingredients were purchased, the group came together over the course of two lunch hours, made the sandwiches and then with the help of Mr Amram and Rabbi Siegel, took the sandwiches downtown to hand out. As the program progresses, the hope is that a different group of students will volunteer each week.

Guest Speakers at KDHS
| This week our 11th grade Judaic studies students were lucky to meet guest speaker Rabbi Dr. Joshua Berman, professor of Bar Ilan University. He presented medieval paintings portraying the biblical scene of Pharaoh's daughter rescuing the baby Moses from the Nile, and explained how these paintings serve as commentary upon the Biblical text, which the students also studied.
Also, our 10th grade Judaic studies students met Rabbi David Aaron, Founder of Isralight (focusing on "transformational and inspirational Jewish living"). His presentation focused on the Me, Self and I in terms of Jewish Kabbalistic/mystical insights; how does the "character" we "play" in life constitute our Self/Soul and our connection with God.
Our Grade 12 students had the rare experience of hearing from a Sufi Sheikh and an Israeli Jew, representatives of Jerusalem Peacemakers, speak embracingly and beautifully of each other's people and religions and the many common threads which interweave their culture and history. Eliyahu and Ghassan spoke of the many common endeavors of Israeli and Arab communities, Jewish and Moslem neighbors celebrating together and and working as partners in Israel in seeking to build bridges of understanding and appreciation. It was a wonderful example of two peoples, cultures and religions finding the many reasons for and ways to promote an enduring and shared peace.

Meet our Judaics Coordinator - Rabbi Stephen Berger
|
Rabbi Berger started working at the age of 13 and tried his hand as a caterer, karaoke DJ, lobbyist, journalist, PI and governmental worker before deciding that the best way to impact the world is to start with yourself.
After graduating from UCLA he decided to take a year off to go backpacking. A student of history, he began in Europe and explored the region's cultures, learning from all the opportunities and experiences he encountered. Six months into the trip he detoured to Israel for the wedding of a friend. Someone approached him at the Western Wall. "Attend a class?" He had never heard of a yeshiva but why not? That's what this whole experience was about--tasting, trying and learning. The class was intriguing, and was like nothing he had ever experienced before. So he stayed on for a few classes. That detour turned into eight years of study in several yeshivas in Israel where he received rabbinical ordination, met his wife Sarah, from New Zealand, and had 5 wonderful children, including two sets of twins.
Returning to North America Rabbi Berger became a dynamic and energetic educator who strives to connect with and inspire each of his students. He has many years of experience educating Jewish teens in both formal and informal settings and has taught at every Jewish school in Vancouver. "I am passionate about instilling within students a deep love and appreciation of Torah and Jewish tradition. I want them to see the beauty, warmth and relevance of the ideas and concepts that I missed growing up and have been fortunate enough to acquire during my time at yeshiva."
Toward this goal, Rabbi Berger served as the NCSY regional director for the northern California area, Long Island region and the northwest region -- covering from Oregon to Alberta. During his time with NCSY he pioneered new initiatives including the nationally run Friday Night Lights program as well as the western branch of Torah High, a BC accredited after school program for Jewish public or private school teens, where he currently serves as the regional director and principal. For the past two years he also worked part time for KDHS and this year he was hired as a full-time teacher and Director of Jewish Life. He is currently finishing his Masters in Education degree at Yeshiva University's Azraeli Graduate School of Education and a thesis in affective education.

Rabbi Berger and Eli, Grade 10, deep in discussion.
