Alumni Update from Israel
"Israel is amazing, I love the atmosphere here and all of the people. I feel very comfortable travelling around by myself because everyone is really very helpful and kind! "
                                       Leyla Brucar, Class of 2011

Leyla Brucar reports from her one year program in Israel.  The following is an excerpt from her latest email update:
Leyla Brucar

Every day, we have roughly 7 hours of classes where we learn things  like modern Judaism, Israeli  history, Jewish history, the history of Anti-Semitism and much more  A goal of the program is to try and help you discover how Israel and Judaism relates to you and our madrichim try and help us figure this all out by asking us really challenging questions about ourselves.

Since I have never been a person who really thought they believed in G-d and didn't really know my true connection to Judaism or how I wanted to be connected to Judaism, it has been a struggle but the things that I am discovering about myself and about my beliefs are really truly amazing.

This weekend, we went to a Rabin Seminar that was held at a beautiful hotel in Porriya. The seminar was filled with Habonim Dror Olami, Habonim Dror kids from North America, Australia, South Africa and many South American countries. The seminar consisted of Peulot and lectures about Rabin's ideology, his history, and about how it is our responsibility as members of youth movements around the globe to educate and promote peace to future generations.

We also had the option to do the seminar is Hebrew or in Spanish, so I decided to do it in Hebrew and hoped that it wouldn't be too difficult! I was so unbelievably shocked at my ability to understand everything that was being said in our lectures and discussions and I was really surprised to see that I have stopped translating Hebrew to English so I can understand it! It was really amazing seeing North Americans and South Americans come together and communicate in the only language that was common to both of us: Hebrew! It was such a beautiful thing to experience.

I really do miss everyone at King David, I never realized what a safe haven it was until I left!
Meet our Judaics Coordinator - Rabbi Daniel Seigel

Rabbi Siegel has extensive experience as a Jewish educator, both in community day schools and in congregational religious schools.

Rabbi Siegel was inspired to (formally) enter the field of education, at 17, when

gaining a glimpse of what might be, beyond the security and comfort of what "is". In a continuously evolving journey, as an educator, Rabbi Siegel has come to understand that each educational moment is a moment of soul making and that our success as educators is born of seeing possibility and promise within each individual student and being sensitive to the particular path upon which she/he is journeying (חנוך לנער על פי דרכו)

As a Jewish educator, Rabbi Siegel believes he is engaged in an ongoing endeavor of kedushah (holiness), seeking to foster an understanding and appreciation of Jewish living that is personally integrative, empowering and transformative.

Rabbi Siegel holds a Master of Arts degree in Jewish Studies, a Master of Arts degree in Jewish Philosophy, has Day School Principal certification and Rabbinic ordination. He has published in the spheres of Jewish Studies and Jewish Education and has received awards and commendation in both fields.

Contributing to the field of Jewish education through the Jewish camping experience, Rabbi Siegel has served as counselor, teacher, division head and sports head in several Jewish camps.

Actively engaging school communities in the experiential realm of Jewish education, Rabbi Siegel has promoted, planned and fostered Jewish celebratory and social action programs and projects.  Rabbi Siegel is personally and professionally dedicated to promoting and experiencing lifelong Jewish learning and living.

Sunday Funday comes to King David!
During September of 2010, a group of King David alumni, attending Western University created Sunday Funday. This innovative endeavor has now spread throughout London, Ontario. Sunday Funday brings a group of people  together on a Sunday for a potluck dinner. They come together with their homemade food along with an item for the food bank in London, Ontario. They called the dinner Sunday Funday as it symbolizes the obvious: having fun on a Sunday (a day most of us dread because of the impending doom of Monday).

Here at King David our Grade 10 Hebrew class was inspired and adopted the idea of Sunday Funday. Adapting it to fit in
with our school day, we began having breakfast on Thursday mornings and bringing in an item for the food bank in Vancouver. Our goal is to make this grow within our school and hopefully invite other Grades to join us so we could make this a big event at King David!

Spotlight on Youth - KDHS Immigration Documentaries
With the help of Jewish History Teacher Eleanor Braude, KDHS Grade 11/12 students created original videos exploring the immigration stories of their family members. Students received training by Jewish Museum & Archives of BC staff on how to conduct interviews for historical purposes, how to identify primary historical resources, and how to research for historical photographs and documents through the JMABC facility and online genealogy and archives databases.

After many months of post-production, the videos are now available to view on the JMABC websiteClick here

Sports News
Congratulations to the Senior Coed Volleyball Team who defeated Traditional Learning Academy last Wednesday by a score of 3 sets to 0.  Solly Lazar was named the game's most valuable player, and Captain Jacob Pawer was a great leadership inspiration.  The team also includes Emma Vinnitsky, Carmel Laniado, Samantha Levin, Eitan Nifco, Noah Bogdonov, Rebecca Shaw and Guy Hayun.  The Lions second game was against LGCA, where they fell by a score of 3 sets to 1.  However, the Lions showed a lot of improvement and teamwork, and all sets were very close.  Jacob Pawer was named the Lions MVP for this second game.

The three KDHS basketball teams have all begun their programs this week.  The Junior Boys' first game is Thurs Nov 24th vs PTI at 2:30PM at the JCC.  The Senior Boys' first game is Thurs Nov 24th vs PTI at 1:15PM at the JCC.  The Senior Girls' first game is on Wed Nov 30th vs BCCA at 2:45PM at the JCC.  Best of luck to all teams!

The Miami Heat intramurals basketball team had qualified for the championship game to be held next week, weather permitting.  The teachers' team - the Thunder will be playing the Toronto Raptors in the semi final today, for a chance to play the Heat for the Championship trophy!  Results to be shared next week.
