Shabbat Dinner | "It was a really great opportunity to bond with the older grades through games, activities and good food!" - Rachel Pekeles, Grade 8
"I feel so much closer to the younger students in the school" - Adam Sanders, Grade 10
"It was nice to see grade 10 students as leaders. I am looking forward to being a leader at KDHS too" - Izzy Flader, Grade 8

The Friday Night Shabbat Dinner with the Grade 8 through 10 students was phenomenal. The atrium looked amazing with the Bedouin tent set up - fitting in with our theme about Home. During the dinner, the tables were set up beautifully and a number of people from each grade were seated together.
A special thank you to the parent volunteers who shopped, cooked, cleaned and added to the special atmosphere of Shabbat. Toda to Shoshi for all of her organizing and her creativity in making the event come alive and to Rabbi Berger and Rabbi Siegel for their inspiration and leadership. The students were so excited they are already planning the next Shabbat dinner so stay tuned for more details.

Louis Brier Kabbalat Shabbat Visit
| Last Friday, Rabbi Siegel took KDHS students David Rosengarten, Benny Neiman, Eden Fish, Vanessa Stern, Galia Horwitz, and Mikaela Ergas-Lennett, to Louis Brier for a Kabbalat Shabbat program. The students led the seniors in chanting kiddush, saying the motzi and lighting/blessing the Shabbat candles. They engaged the seniors in conversation while visiting with them and sang Shabbat songs with them. |
| Kristallnacht Visual Display | The Grade 10 students created a visual display to commemorate Kristallnact. Half of the grade worked on a black and white "shattered window". On each of the shards they have written facts about what occurred on Kristallnacht in addition to their personal reflections. The rest of the group worked on a more colourful window, where the pieces have begun to come together, symbolising the healing of the Jewish people. On Wednesday, November 9th Sam Khalifa and Adam Sanders made an announcement to the school reminding us about Kristallnacht and inviting students to view the display at the entrance of the school. During the day we discussed Kristallnacht commemoration during Judaic classes.

Grade 12 Running Club | | "Working out keeps me sane, and running club helps ensure that I dedicate time to it." Suzy Flader - Grade 12
This year a new club has been added to the KDHS pride: the Grade 12 Running Club. The girls run twice a week, rain or shine, and alternate routes accordingly. Much emphasis is put on challenging oneself, leading to more intense workouts and improved self-confidence. Says Naomi Landsberg, "It has been a great way for me to diversify my workout." A lot of stress also comes with the Grade 12 year, and running is a great way of relieving it. All Grade 12 girls and running levels are welcome. To cater to this diversity, three different level groups have been set up, all of which are monitored by either Ms. Baloun, Ms. Stibravy, Ms. Gardiner or Ms. Watson. In the new year, the club will expand by reaching out to younger students, in the hopes of inspiring a love of fitness and personal challenge among all the girls of the school.

Meet our Visual Arts Teacher - Wendy Oberlander! |
Wendy Oberlander, an accomplished visual artist and filmmaker, brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to the Art Studio at KDHS.
Wendy Oberlander has exhibited her work across North America and Europe in galleries, at festivals, and on international broadcast. Her long-standing focus is the way Jewish history and memory are inscribed, both personally and publicly. The recipient of numerous grants and awards over the past thirty years, her work includes site-specific installations, permanent public art projects, and documentaries.
Wendy has taught in both school and post-secondary settings, including Emily Carr University and Simon Fraser University prior to joining KDHS in 2005. She has also worked at a variety of cultural institutions as a programmer, curator, educator and administrator in Vancouver, Seattle and San Francisco. Currently, she is programming for DOXA, a documentary film festival in Vancouver, and contributing to a ground-breaking exhibition at the Vancouver Holocaust Education Centre scheduled to open in 2012 - in addition to working on a short, animated documentary about Canadian Jewish history. Wendy is honoured to work with KDHS students in the art studio, where the learning is rich, challenging and stimulating for both teacher and students. "As I enter my third decade of teaching, I see that nurturing each student's unique creative process is the most rewarding focus I can provide. In the studio, we have the chance to explore original thinking and critical thinking, and to collaborate as we ask questions and solve problems - in addition to mastering skills and creating beautiful artwork. Getting to know each student is honestly the best part of my day - we have a terrific community of creative, thoughtful and expressive artists at KDHS."

 | | Junior Girls Volleyball Team |
Congratulations to the Jr Girls Volleyball team for winning 2 games in their recent playoffs at Harry Jerome Sportsplex. The Lions defeated Bodwell and Fraser Academy after just barely being defeated by Deer Lake in a very close match. The Lions finished in 5th place overall out of 14 teams, and Galia Horwitz was named one of the tournament all stars in the junior girls category. This is an amazing achievement as there was approximately 130 girls to choose from, and only 6 all star awards were given out! Well done, ladies!
Congratulations to the BTM Girls Volleyball team for coming in 4th place this season. The Lions just fell short of upsetting Regent Chrisitan School losing by only 2 points in the third set, after taking the second set off them in convincing fashion. Izzy Khalifa was named the team's most valuable player. Well done, ladies! Can't wait to see everyone again next year!
