Strengthening Student Connections
| |
"It was so nice to see the three grades laughing together. Now when we see each other in the hallways it is easy to talk to each other."
Eden Fish and Mikaela Ergas- Lenett (Grade 10)
In preparation for tonight's Shabbat Dinner in a Bedouin tent, the Grade 10 hosts excited about this leadership opportunity, created a pre-dinner bonding experience to ensure the comfort of their younger peers in Grade 8 and 9. Games organized by the Grade 10s were followed by a session of Laughing Yoga. Fun was had by all!

"I liked the Laughing Yoga a lot!" It has made it easier to feel more comfortable with everyone." Carly Rothman (Grade 8)

| Post Secondary Study Explorations |
"It was great. The professor from Hebrew University gave an excellent presentation in which he explained Molecular Biology in a simple way. Then we had a really great tour of the research center at Children's Hospital. We were shown this new and innovative way to give vaccinations using a micro needle too small to be detected by the pain receptors in the arm."
Naomi Landsberg (Grade 12)
Twelve Grade 12 students attended the 2011 International Gairdner Symposium on Careers in Health Sciences on October 24th at the Child and Family Research Institute. The keynote speakers were Dr. Howard Cedar and Dr. Michael Hayden. Their presentations were informative and interesting and both doctors spoke of their work in the medical research field, teaching and other areas and the individual paths they followed in their education to reach their current field of work.
A question and answer period followed each presentation and then all students were divided into smaller groups to observe two different places of research currently taking place within the large hospital complex. The students stated that it was a very worthwhile experience and provided them with more information about the various roles in the health science area.
"I liked Michael Hayden's presentation. We got a great perspective of what it would be like to go into medical research."

| | "Chem 11 is so interesting! Seeing the temperature and states change was amazing."
Deborah Heffes (Grade 10)
In Chemistry 11 our students were studying the difference between chemical and physical changes. Paradichlorobenzene is heated and cooled to collect data which is then plotted on graphs to determine melting and solidification Deborah Heffes checks for change points. Not only is it interesting, it also makes the room smell great (just like the smell in the men's washroom!

Your Life Online ... Cyber Safety for Teens
| |
"I really like the workshop as it taught me new things - things I didn't know at all. Now I am more aware of what's going on on the internet."
Noga Goldman (Grade 8)
Throughout the year KDHS students at different grades will be exposed to a variety of lif e skills workshops. This week the Grade 8 class had Your Life Online, an online safety workshop, presented by SOLOS (Safe Online Outreach Society). Young people are spending record amounts of time online. They are doing more, posting more information and visible to more people than ever before. This presentation covered the consequences of posting information online - how public it is, and how long it will last.
Students were asked to think about; * Their identities online - are they private or public? * How public is their Facebook and other online data? * Online content is permanent. * What may be consequences in the future from data they post now? * What can others' find out about you online? * Who might be looking at your information online?
Students were encouraged to; * Be responsible for what they post online. * Take a stand against online harassment and tell someone if they are victimized. * Be skeptical of people they meet online. * Learn more by going to educational websites. For more information about SOLOS and other useful online safety tips, click here.

Meet our Development Director - Sharon Dwek!
|
In between her career as a lawyer and before her career in fundraising, Sharon was the tour manager for Israeli bands visiting college campuses in California.
Sharon joined our administration team in February 2011. Sharon moved with her family from Palo Alto California. Most recently, Sharon worked at Gideon Hausner Jewish Day School in Palo Alto, CA as Director of Development. She directed all fundraising activities including annual giving, endowment and capital campaign, special projects, and other school-related solicitations.
Sharon's first role in the Jewish community was in the San Francisco Jewish Community Federation's Israel and Overseas Department where she worked on developing and planning living bridge and Jewish pluralism programs with schools, JCCs and community leaders in the Bay Area and Israel. One of her favorite projects was coordinating concert tours for Israeli artists on Bay Area college and university campuses. She has had the pleasure of working with Israeli bands such as the Idan Raichel Project, HaDag Nahash and Fools of Prophecy. By far the highlight of her professional career!
Before her career as tour manager for Israeli bands, Sharon was a practicing lawyer and has served as Corporate Counsel and Portfolio Manager for Evergreen Partners, a venture capital firm in Tel Aviv, Israel.
"I feel blessed to be working at King David with the dedicated team of volunteers, teachers and administration. Their passion and commitment inspire me everyday! I love working in high school and feeling the positive energy that the students generate."

Calling Grade 8 and 10 Families!
| |
We are looking for one more Grade 8 parent and 2 more Grade 10 parents to be 'class reps' for this year. This involves making occasional call-outs to all the families on your list (approx 10 - 15 families) to let them know about specific events happening at KDHS. This happened 3 or 4 times last year, I don't anticipate it will be much different this year.
This year, we are asking that the callers also take on the role of KDHS cheerleader and make a strong effort to speak to each family directly rather than leaving messages. It's always nice and it is important for them to connect with a warm, enthusiastic, real person!
Each time there is a call-out, you earn a minimum of 1 PPP hour, even if it only takes you 20 minutes to do the calls. Good deal, huh???? Then again, you could have long, drawn out conversations and earn LOTS of hours!
Let me know if you are interested. Thanks.
