Sukkot Biblical Garden Tour
| |
During Sukkot, over thirty parents and grandparents joined KDHS students for a tour of the biblical gardens. King David High School provides a unique setting for classroom learning as well as discovering our biblical heritage in the outdoors. The concept for the heritage landscape is based on Psalm 104 verse 24 "O Lord, how manifold are thy works! In wisdom hast thou made them all; the earth is full of thy creatures." In this garden the plants described in the Torah are featured and grouped according to the geography of Israel.
We were delighted to have Cornelia Hahn Oberlander, world renowned Landscape Architect and designer of our garden, join us to share the inspiration for it's design and explain the plants it contains and their relationship with Eretz Yisrael.

Carmel Laniado (Grade 12) introduces Cornelia Hahn Oberlander
|
"Yesterday was magical. The weather was so beautiful. The sukkah was perfect and the lunch prepared by the students was delicious. Everyone was so interested in the garden and the plants and I will be delighted to come for another tour."

Sharing our home with the homeless
| |
"The amount of knowledge and interest these people had blew me away. I was extremely honoured that they were so open to share their stories and views on life with us. These people have gone through horrific things in their lives and I could tell it meant a lot to them to know that we care."
Adina Landsberg (Grade 10)
On the evening of October 18th as part of the mitzvah of Ushpizin (welcoming guest) King David hosted welcomed eight members of the First United Church Shelter into our sukkah for a meal prepared by our students. In conjunction with providing a meal students collected clothing and toiletries which they our guests took back to the shelter for distribution Student Reflections I was fortunate to be able to have dinner in the school sukkah with a group of homeless people from Vancouver. Prior to the dinner, I was a little apprehensive. What was I going to talk about? Did we have anything in common? Was it going to be very long, quiet evening? During dinner, I found myself talking to one person about hockey and another about poetry. One person told me that they had attended UBC and graduated in the arts. At one point, we were all engaged in a discussion on religion. As the night went on, we quickly became one group of people sharing a meal in the sukkah. I went into the dinner thinking that it would be a mitzvah on my part and a benefit to our guests. When, in fact, I was the person who learned and benefitted from the evening. Sam Khalifa (Grade 10)
I wanted to participate in the evening out of curiosity and out of the need to contribute back to my community. Each person at our sukkah table had a part of their lives to share with us. They spoke of religion, hopes, past lives and dreams. They were no longer the homeless, an anonymous group of people; they were individuals who joined us in a temporary home to share a meal together.
Now I see things differently. I have a deeper appreciation of the things I have and the opportunities that I have been given. I also understand that the gift of giving back is not about me, and fulfilling my needs, but about fulfilling the needs of those truly in need. Bayle James (Grade 10) |
Simchat Torah Celebration
| |
"Thanks so much for today! It was a wonderful frailech Simchat Torah and I think the children really enjoyed it. We were so glad they came, played instruments and helped make this a very special community event. We hope that we can do it again next year. It was really great!" Debbie Lewin, E.C.E. Judaic Coordinator
The celebration of Simchat Torah is full of singing and dancing! Students and faculty from KDHS, VTT and RJDS came together to celebrate, parading through the streets holding the Sifrei Torah. Their journey took them from King David to Louis Brier and then to visit the children at the JCC before returning to KDHS for dancing and Torah reading.

King David Thanks Congregation Shaarey Tefilah
| |
"With this wonderful gift, KDHS will continue and will enhance its commitment to making our shared Torah great and glorious."
David Rosengarten (Student Council President, Grade 12)
As many of you already know, as of last year, our school received a very honorable and generous gift from Shaarey Tefilah. The gift was made possible by Dr. Arthur Hayes, the grandfather of our recent graduates Josh Hayes, Amanda and David Watson.
Dr. Ralph Rothstein, who has served as the KDHS Board chair for Judaics for many years, shared the history behind the generous gift from Shaarey Tefilah and thanked Dr. Hayes for the Sifrei Torah and and endowment fund to ensure that KDHS is able to fulfill their their mission of providing a Jewish education for any student who wants it, irrespective of their financial circumstances.

Opera Experience
|
"The opera was amazing, to hear all those voices and have a back stage tour, it was an experience of a lifetime." Rosie Shiff (Grade 8)
"It was a good experience and let me have the opportunity of seeing a different kind of art." Galia Horowiz (Grade 10)
On October 23rd, twenty four students and five parents from KDHS attended the Matinee performance of the opera "West Side Story". This dazzling Broadway musical with original high-energy Jerome Robbins choreography, a thirty piece orchestra, young singers and dancers in a colourful new co-production was most entertaining. This was one of a three parts program offered to King David High School students. It started with a classroom visit, continued with a backstage tour and ended with this great performance.
The next opera is on December 1st and will be an evening performance of "Romeo et Juliette". Gounod's gorgeous version of Shakespeare's tragic story is graceful, dramatic, and supremely melodic.
The classroom visit will take place, November 24th at 11:20am in our music room. Registration deadline: November 18th. Contact Shoshi for more information
