KDHS celebrates the release of Gilad Shalit!

"We are so glad to see that Gilad has been reunited with his family. Gilad finally has freedom again."

Alexandra Ferera, Vanessa Stern and Galia Horwitz  (Grade 10)

Welcome home, Gilad! For five years, KDHS students have followed the dilemma surrounding Gilad Shalit and prayed for his release and safe return to his family. Now, with the rest of the community, we celebrate!

Through discussions, debates, leading events in the community to increase awareness, KDHS students have been involved in the fight to bring Gilad home. For the past three years King David students have visited Gilad's tent during their trip to Israel. They have spoken with Gilad's parents and are overjoyed to see the news clips of his release. Arriving at school this morning students removed the flag from their classroom where it had been hanging as an everyday reminder and displayed it proudly in the atrium.

  Sukkah building is team work
KDHS has a beautiful new sukkah this year!  Our sincere appreciation goes to the Khalifa, Berger and Youngson families, Kevington Building staff, Renee and Jonathan Katz, Dunbar Lumbar and Shafique Shivji for the design, materials and building skills that went into creating a structure that will be here for years to come.

Stay tuned - next week's Iton Hatichon will showcase the many events that are taking place in the new sukkah!

M'Dor L'Dor - From generation to generation

"Generations coming and going, it's always wonderful to see how tender our students are with seniors and how much they, in turn, love the  attention"

Music to feed the soul.

Celebrity Chef Anthony Sedlak

"Chef Sedlak talked to us about the importance of organic food and its health benefits ... he then showed us how to make tomato soup. He took us through all the steps and showed us special techniques and special cooking methods."

                                                             Liza Nifco (Grade 11)

On Friday, October 7 KDHS students were lucky to attend a food demonstration by Chef Anthony Sedlak, a FoodTV chef and host of the TV show "The Main". Chef Sedlak grew up in North Vancouver and is a very passionate chef and educator. "King David is a beautiful school and  working with children is close to my heart," he said.  Chef Sedlak is an ambassador for sustainable and ethical food practices, and with a very interactive demonstration, allowed students to get a hands on feel of some local organic garlic and tomatoes. Anthony gave an entertaining oral history of his journey to become a professional chef, and he also shared a wonderful  Hairloom Peasant Style Tomato Soup recipe.

"Speaking to young people in schools allows me the platform to share my passion and hopefully inspire the students at the same time."

Judging by the laughter and the empty soup bowls, KDHS students were certainly inspired!

KDHS + Whitecaps Players = Soccer Experience!

Our soccer teams had a wonderful opportunity during practice yesterday! Two Whitecaps players, Jeb Brovsky and John Thorrington  lead skills, fitness and drills and then played a short game with the a KDHS team!

Our thanks to Neal Chark for organizing this experience for us - we hear that volunteering at schools is not something they usually do!!

Not only did they share their soccer skills, they also shared their involvement in community outreach and part
nerships with other organizations e.g. Homeless Street Soccer.
