We Present to You King David's Student Council 2011-12 |
"I see such great potential in what the school is capable of achieving. With the full cooperation and support of the entire student body, we as a school can do so much. We are all looking forward to a successful and fulfilling year." David Rosengarten, 2011-12 Student Council President
We are pleased to announce the 2011-12 King David Student Council
President: David Rosengarten
Vice President: Ezequiel Blumenkrans
Treasurer: Suzy Flader
Secretary: Justin Fishman
Judaic Representative: Naomi Landsberg
Intramural Representatives: Alex Berger and Dean Michelson
Gr 12 Representatives: Yuval Burton and Saul Zetler
Gr 11 Representatives: Aliza Hirsch and Nicole Isserow
Gr 10 Representatives: Sam Khalifa and Adam Sanders
King David students exercised their democratic right to choose their elected officials. With an interesting and diverse slate, the candidates presented their platforms and made promises to the student body for more activities, dances and non-uniform days.
Some of the highlights from the speeches include Student Council Vice President Ezequiel (Zeke) Blumenkrans plans on creating a joint super Miztvah Day, Me To We, Student Council mega-meeting. During this meeting all three organizations will get together, "bounce ideas off one another and co-ordinate our events as to assure that there is better communication and so that we can all act like a tightly knit group." Stay tuned for what Zeke calls Funny Mondays, dodge ball tournaments, as well as indoor competitions for lunchtimes.
Naomi Landsberg, the newly elected Judaics Representative, pledged to her fellow classmates to hold a school wide model Seder and to make good use of our biblical garden with the 7 species, during Holiday celebrations at school.
The Grade 12 Student Council Representatives, Yuval Burton and Saul Zelter won the hearts of the voters by quoting Harry Truman, "If you can't convince them, confuse them", and that they did.
With such committed and talented representatives we are looking forward to an exciting year. Stay tuned and see you in the fall. |

"King David instilled the value of being a mensch, and the meaning behind acts of Chesed."
Aviva Rappaport, Class of 2009 and UBC's 2011 Shinerama Campaign Director
 | Aviva Rappaport, Dahlia James, Alan Schweber, Marcos Mogyoros, and Michael Grubner |
On June14th, King David students gathered together to meet some familiar faces who shared with them the stories of life after King David. While they are all succeeding at university the experiences they shared wwere of their social action work.
"Many children go through life ignored and introduced into an educational system that is overwhelmed, exhausted, and facing monetary cutbacks. We at Brainwave hope to pick up the kids who are in this disadvantaged position and inspire them, energize them, mentor them, and most importantly, pay attention to them."
Michael Grubner, Class of 2008 and Co-Founder of Brainwave
Michael Grubner, Class of 2008 and Jonathan Simkin, Class of 2009, co-founded Brainwave, which provides disadvantaged younger students with educational, interactive, and fun field trips. The students visit places such as UBC chemistry and biology laboratories, Science World, TRIUMF Accelerator at UBC, the Aquarium, and many other interesting local venues. Through interactive activities and field trips, Brainwave hopes to inspire participants to pursue further education, while highlighting positive social values and teamwork. Brainwave prides itself on both the diversity of its volunteers and the diversity of its participants, who come from a culturally diverse background including individuals with special needs. When Michael presented to our students, he immediately confessed that at King David, he and Jonathan were usually up to mischief. Today, they greatly appreciate the quality education they received and the interactive dynamic learning environment King David provides. Now, they are working on getting the next generation inspired about learning and giving them the headstart they all deserve in life. For more information on how to volunteer or support Brainwave contact Michael atmichael_grubner@hotmail.com
Aviva Rappaport, Class of 2009,
is working towards a Bachelor of Science degree in Food, Nutrition, and Health at UBC. Aviva shared with the students a short video of a personal friend who is living with Cystic Fibrosis (CF). Her struggle has inspired Aviva to devote her time and skills to CF research and care through Shinerama, the largest post-secondary fundraiser across Canada. As UBC's campaign director her goal is to raise $36,000 (double Chai). At King David, Aviva was involved in activities such as Magen David Adom Day and Mitzvah Day. According to Aviva, "They provided me with the necessary skill and attitude to fundraise and work both efficiently and cooperatively in a team. At UBC I have continued this tradition that started at KDHS in giving back to the community." For more information on ways to support Aviva in her efforts or if you own a business that would like to partner with the UBC Shinerama, contact rappaportaviva@gmail.comor click here to make a tax deductible donation to Shineorama.
Marcos Mogyoros, Class of 2008, just returned from spending 5 months in Israel volunteering for Magen David Adom while taking a break from his studies at UBC. After an intense 60 hour basic and advanced training program, Marcos volunteered as a paramedic with Israel's Magen David Adom in both Tel-Aviv and Jerusalem. During his time at King David, Marcos was involved with raising funds to purchase an ambulance for Magen David Adom, which sparked his interest to go on this program. Just 3 years after graduating from King David, Marcos found himself responding to calls transferring women in labour and performing CPR, with a few calls to the West Bank which required military escort. Marcos loved being in Israel, especially Tel-Aviv, which was a perfect place to wind down after intense 8 hour shifts, where at times it was only him and a driver making the call.

Esty skypes in from Boston
|
Esty Yekutieli, Class of 2003, is currently doing her Ph.D in Psychology at Boston University and was "skyped" into the conversation. She spoke about utilizing her profession as a therapist as an opportunity to give back to her community.
Alan Schweber, Class of 2008, was the recipient of the Hebrew University Rothberg International School Scholarship Majoring in Economics at McGill University. He spent his third year at Hebrew U where he took courses focusing on Israeli society and politics. After graduating from King David with strong abilities in Hebrew and two months of Ulpan, Alan was able to take classes in Hebrew, connect with Israelis in the dorms and work in Tel-Aviv during winter break. Living in Israel for a year was an opportunity to see Israel in a whole different light and appreciate the beauty and complexity of Israeli society. For more info about Hebrew University Overseas Program, click here http://overseas.huji.ac.il/
Dahlia James, Class of 2009, is currently the Vice President of the University of Toronto Chapter of STAND, Students Taking Action Now: Darfur. STAND is a student-run organization with chapters in campuses and high schools nationwide. As part of the organizing committee of King David's Mitzvah Day, Dahlia had worked to raise awareness about the situation in Darfur and to raise funds to purchase solar cookers. She noted that the solar cookers are a more efficient way of ensuring that the support reaches those who need it since, at times, the money itself falls into the wrong hands. As a Political Science major, Dahlia is using her advocacy skills to lobby MPs to make addressing all genocides a cornerstone of Canadian public policy.

Here is a Sneak Peak at the 2011-12 school-wide Retreat!
|
"Last year was our first school-wide retreat. Just like any family, our spending time away adds to the depth of the relationships that exist between students, and between students and teachers. We are so pleased to be able to offer this experience much earlier this year - it will give our new students a chance to get to know the KDHS family and our current students time to welcome them and reconnect with other friends. With any luck, we might even see the sun this time!"
Russ Klein, Head of School

With summer just around the corner, King David faculty and community volunteers are working hard on preparing for next year. The first order of business when we come back in the fall, before we sit back at desks and focus on Math and Science .....we are all going away for three days and two nights of FUN (and learning of course)!
An outdoor setting offers a powerful venue for achieving many aspects of King David's mission: to develop strong, compassionate leaders, and create an inclusive school environment. By taking students away from their everyday, comfortable environment into a place of perceived uncertainty and by engaging students in new and exciting learning activities with their peers, opportunities are provided for them to learn new skills and to re-think their beliefs about themselves and others.
Date: Monday, September 12, 2011 through Wednesday September 14, 2011.
Venue: Camp Squeah, Hope www.squeah.com
Cost (per student): $225 (includes accommodation, transportation, food and programming).
More information will follow shortly - check for emails!

Experiences from Washington Enrich Classroom Learning
|
" ... I began thinking about the entire exhibition we had seen in Washington, D.C. .... I then began thinking about how the Holocaust started ... Then I thought about WW1 and the depression, but I wanted it to be more heartfelt than that and then it hit me, propaganda. Propaganda was truly how the Holocaust started."
Alexandra Ferera, Grade 9
As a follow up to the visit to the Holocaust Museum in Washington, the students were asked to create a poster reflecting their response to what they had learned.
Some students chose to depict the helplessness of the Jews - Deborah created a stark black poster with a railroad track - she wanted to show that the Jews had no control over where they were being sent.

Other students wanted to show the dehumanization process - Sam focused on the medical experiments while Vanessa showed how humans were treated as animals.

Galia's poster is of a teddy bear surrounded by barbed wire - for her the cuddly bear symbolizes the fate of the children.
Alexandra drew a picture of a gun pointed at the Nazi cartoon of a Jew - it is a warning about the danger of propaganda.

"Each student has produced something remarkable and I could go on and on - instead I invite you to my classroom where all the posters are on display."

These amazing PAC members have dedicated their time, energy and hearts to the school. They have paved the way for all the new PAC members who join KDHS each year. Thank you for your years of service! We appreciate all that you have done.
Thank you too, to all of the PAC regulars and volunteers who make KDHS even better through their ongoing efforts. There are many wonderful ideas for next year already germinating in the PAC incubator!
