We Present to You King David's Class of 2011
"I believe I speak on behalf of the entire graduating class when I thank and extend my gratitude to all the teachers and faculty that made such a difference in our high school lives. You have helped us not only reach, but surpass our goals, so we owe you all a big thanks." --Jonathan Raich on behalf of KDHS Class of 2011
Graduation is always a memorable, emotional and moving experience for parents, students and for teachers and staff. This year was no exception. Our students looked fabulous and certainly made us all proud! As Russ Klein, Head of School said, "We anticipate with delight, how these young people will enrich each and every person that they touch through their collective energy, wisdom, compassion, humour, and creativity as they move on to the next exciting chapter of their lives."
As Jonathan Raich, speaking on behalf of KDHS Class of 2011, so eloquently said, "We are now entering a new stage in our lives; one that will face us with challenges, new beginnings and continuations of the family values and the Jewish values that we came from. Wherever you go, always remember to be yourself. I know you hear this all the time but it's true and it's very important to show your true colors. We must try and be Mensches, we should give whenever we have the chance, be selfless and care for others. Work hard, live up to your full potential and never ever give up. As we've learned here in these walls, all of these things make a person the best they can be, and help make the world a better place."
| | The Class of 2011 |
"The incredibly capable students in the Class of 2011 have put in many hours of hard work and made an indelible mark on our school. They are full of humour and vibrancy, they are exciting and excitable, capable and creative, caring and intelligent. They are smile makers," says Russ Klein, Head of School.

To the Graduating Class of 2011, Kol Hakavod for a job well done!

The Next Stop After Graduation
At King David the academic excellence is a given and we know that our students have the support to succeed academically and the internal drive to reach their fullest academic potential. The talents and skills we saw during their years here at King David are evident through the programs they are attending at Canada's top Universities. The programs range from Social Sciences, Humanities, Business, Science and Engineering, Music and Pre-Med with a number of our graduates taking social action and volunteering in Israel next year.
When we send our graduates out into the world we would like to ensure that they are well equipped to address the challenges and obstacles of life after high school. On Thursday May 26, Isabelle St. Jean, Special Needs and Youth Program Coordinator from the Jewish Family Service Agency came to KDHS to present a workshop on Transitioning from High School to Young Adulthood for our Grade 12 students. The students themselves chose the topics they wanted Jean to address. Self-esteem and self-concept, good mental health and wellness habits, managing time and stress, making choices that suit you best, financial literacy and getting services away from home. We wish our graduates the best of luck, continue to make us proud! |
Kol Israel Chaverim or Tomorrow
"After the year-end party experience I felt the relationship with my mentee went to a whole new level. I can't wait to hang out together during the summer." Yuval Burton - Kol Israel Chaverim Mentor
As the school year is coming to an end many year-end celebrations and graduations take place. Last week the KDHS Grade 11 Students who are part of the Kol Israel Chaverim Mentorship program had their year-end party with Pizza and Bowling. The program began in the fall when 14 Grade 11 Students were chosen to undergo training and pair up with younger students in our community. After getting together throughout the year every week, this was an opportunity for all of the mentors and mentees to celebrate the beautiful relationships forged. With summer just around the corner, plans are being made to keep in touch through emails and letters. All are looking forward to reuniting in the fall. A new cohort of mentors will be recruited in September 2011 and following an application and interview process 10 new mentors will undergo training and be paired with new Chaverim.

Israel in Our Hearts |
"We very rarely get the opportunity to listen to those who put their life on the line for Israel and the Jewish people. It was very courageous for these people to share their experiences with us." Ran Shpanya Grade 12

Israel is alive and vibrant through the halls of King David. From the energy our Grade 8 Students brought back from their Israel trip in April, to our ongoing partnership with Har VaGai High School in Northern Israel and to the Grade 12 Israel Advocacy Course. Israel is an integral part of our Judaic curriculum as students learn Jewish history and master the Hebrew language. Throughout the year we have many opportunities for our students to meet with visitors from Israel who present to them the modern Jewish state with all its beauty and complexity.
On May 27th our Grade 12 students had an opportunity to host 8 veterans from Beit Halochem and to hear the personal and moving stories of soldiers who were wounded during their service in the Israeli Defense Forces. Thank you to Paul Becker and Rabbi Bregman of Temple Sholom for bringing this program to our students.
The following week the entire student body gathered to mark Yom Yerushalayim (Jerusalem Day) commemorating the reunification of Jerusalem and the establishment of Israeli control over the Old City in June 1967. The assembly featured IDF soldier Sergeant Benjamin Anthony who described the dilemmas soldiers on the front line face everyday as they protect Israel and its citizens. Our students listened carefully while he described young 18 year old Israeli soldiers who stand strong and dream of going to university but do not know if fate will intervene and make another choice for them.
At King David Israel is an integral part of Jewish identity and the soldiers in the IDF are our brothers and sisters who are protecting our homeland.

Gender Esteem Building
"Teaching our children how to make choices from a place of inner wisdom can be the best prevention strategy of all." - Anita Roberts, SAFETEEN Program Founder
On Monday May 16, Safeteen, a program that teaches unique,
youth-based assertiveness model with a focus on gender esteem building, came to King David to do a 3 hour workshop for our Grades 10 and 11 students. The process is designed to provide youth with tools to identify their own voice of wisdom and to speak their truth from a wise and solid place. The grades were divided by gender, and each group had a facilitator of that gender to speak frankly and openly about topics which included personal safety, healthy relationships, consent and inner strength.
The facilitators explored these and other topics with the intention of empowering our students, specifically in terms of personal responsibility and integrity. Students said that their facilitators were awesome, funny, interesting and REAL.
The girls felt a change in perspective regarding being a woman. They took away from the workshop how to better deal with creepy situation with either a stranger or someone they knew. They felt empowered to stand up for themselves. In the past, they had heard speakers on drugs and alcohol and safe relationships, but they said Safeteen was different. "The facilitator really made these situations real about how I can stand up and speak up for myself against someone I know."
The boys learned "how to be a man"...to be a solid person instead of being fearful or a fighter. A solid person means being honest, respectful and self-aware. They openly discussed "what it's like to be a guy", in terms of what is expected of them by their peers and society, and then broke apart the stigmas, stereotypes and myths and got real with core values.
Parents were so happy when their teens came home on Monday and spoke excitedly about what they took out from the workshop. Thank you to our PAC for providing the funding to implement this workshop for our students. |
