Teaching for Tomorrow - Thank you for Your Support
| |
Teaching for Tomorrow 2011 was an inspirational evening featuring Marc Kielburger. Both King David values and students shined.

Teaching for Tomorrow 2011 was a remarkable and moving experience. Marc Kielburger was inspirational as he spoke to our students and community, empowering each and every one of us to take action to make a change. King David students and values were a focus of the evening through the presenters, video and the beauitful singing of We Are the World. For all of you who attended and were inspired, we ask you to continue to be ambassadors of goodwill for King David. Help us spread the word that there is a small and mighty Jewish community high school in Vancouver which is doing phenomenal things and has a bright future.

Celebrating Israel's 63rd Birthday | |
Parade, Falafel, Israeli Idol ... some of the many highlights in our Yom Ha'atzmaut festivities
| | Yom Ha'atzmaut parade fills Vancouver with VTT, RJDS and KDHS students. |
Yom Ha'atzmaut in King David High School is a cherished tradition in which we celebrate the anniversary of Israel's independence. This year's 63rd Yom Ha'atzmaut was as energetic as ever starting with our inspirational walk alongside Vancouver Talmud Torah and Richmond Jewish Day School students, waving banners in the air and cheering for Israel with pride. We were really excited to welcome to our school, and share the celebration with, Grade 4 to 7 students from RJDS and VTT.
Entering the school was like entering a castle, as the day's theme was "A Promised Land" and the entrance was decorated with bricks and life-size models or Herzel, Golda Meir, and Ben Gurion. Opening the day's activities was a play titled "Once Upon A Promised Land" based on the story of The Princess and the Pea written and acted out by our grade 11 students. As the energy rose, students participated in Israeli dancing outdoors and a classic Israeli lunch was served (falafel in pita). Following lunch, an "Israeli Idol" competition took place. Groups of 2 to 3 students from all grades and schools wrote original lyrics for known songs, with the theme being "Israel!" This year's Yom Ha'atzmaut festivities were full of passion and fun! Our guests had a blast, so much that some told their parents that this day caused them to want to go to King David for high school! We are all anticipating next year's celebration and looking forward to finding out the theme. |

"King David through its Mitzvah Day program is already taking the lead in making a change." Marc Kielburger at Teaching for Tomorrow
On May 17th, King David High School marked its 13th Annual Mitzvah Day. Students from King David and other Lower Mainland high schools were out in full forcewere throughout the community performing mitzvot and raising money and awareness for the situation in Darfur. In the past, the school has raised thousands of dollars to send to Darfuri refugees living on the Chad border. The project they fund is known as the "Solar Cooker Project". Essentially, solar cookers are easily-assembled cardboard and aluminum barbeque-like devices. Darfuri women use them as an alternative to facing the dangerous task of going out to find firewood. Over 200 students, teachers and parents volunteered at 22 organization across the lower mainland including Ronald McDonald House, Salvation Army Harbour Light, the SPCA, Yaffa House, Mission Impossible and many more.
Back at the school students were joined by volunteers and alumni who came to enjoy the BBQ sponsored and served by our PAC parents followed by dessert in the form of a pie throwing contest. If you saw someone wearing a maroon Mitzvah Day shirt, you may have been looking at someone who was doing their part to repair the world...

Night of Celebration 5771 Honouring Student Achievement
|
"The actors were fantastic! I have never been so happy and proud."
Naomi Landsberg, Student Director

Awards night was a night to honour the hard work our students do throughout the year and an opportunity to showcase the talents of our Music, Drama and Art Departments. The art work throughout the school was awe-inspiring and many were taken in by the incredible work of our students displayed on the walls.
The acting and directing talents were evident in a fantastically funny one act pay, Shady Meadows, which was a huge success with the audience. The music was toe-tapping and very impressive as many of our students were performing solo and some original pieces for the first time.

Interspersed with the wonderful Fine Arts events we honoured outstanding student achievement in all of our academic and elective areas. This was also the inaugural offering of a generous donation made by The Congregation Shaarey Tefilah to a top student in both Grade 10 and 11 who are deemed outstanding in Jewish Studies. These Michael H. Epstein z"l, Beloved Parnass Awards were awarded to David Rosengarten in Grade 11 and Vivian Grinfeld in Grade 10. Congratulations - a wonderful night of celebration it was for all (special thanks to the Foods Program for their wonderful appetizers and desserts that kept everyone smiling).
