Greetings!

Thanksgiving is one of my most favorite holidays. The anticipation of the aromas of roasting turkey, pumpkin pie, and other seasonal delights wafting through the house, the laughter at our family gathering, the football extravaganza, holiday shopping, decorations and festivities just around the corner. All of this against the backdrop of the Shenandoah Valley's stunning fall landscape makes me appreciate this bountiful time. Indeed there is much to be thankful for in this season of giving.

I ask you to ponder what the upcoming holiday season means to the patients of the Augusta Regional Free Clinic and the Augusta Regional Dental Clinic. Many patients lost their jobs in this tough economy and are unable to find work at their previous pay level, and find it truly difficult to make ends meet. They sometimes must choose between food and housing, or utilities, and their basic needs are often not met. It is apparent that health and well-being suffer when faced with such challenges. Our patients have more complex medical conditions than the general population because they delayed care due to lack of access, education or affordability. More than two thirds of our patients have one or more chronic conditions such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease, hypertension, and depression and anxiety. On average, each patient receives more than 16 prescriptions annually, and those with chronic conditions take even more.

We know our charitable mission at the Augusta Regional Free Clinic and Augusta Regional Dental Clinic means our patients receive the comprehensive, quality, compassionate care that has been our hallmark for 19 years and the hope that is our inspiration. The staff is dedicated to providing the best medical and dental care to the underserved in our community and this is where the organization has the greatest impact. We are able to leverage the substantial cost of care by using volunteer providers and bulk donated medicine, and we pride ourselves on being excellent stewards of the donations and funding we gratefully receive. Recognized as one of the most cost-effective medical models, we strive to serve all those who qualify and need our help...but we need your help to make it all work. Please consider making a donation to the Free Clinic in this season of giving...this season of hope.

Yours in health,

Margaret Hersh

Executive Director
