Alliance Member Spotlight: California School Board Association
The California School Boards Association is committed to supporting districts that are striving to prepare students for the world of college and career. To support that goal, CSBA has begun the work of providing support to our members who are contemplating or are already implementing a Linked Learning approach to reform in their high schools. One way we are doing that is to provide training to the governing teams of California Linked Learning District Initiative participants who have received grants from the Irvine Foundation. The role of the governing board in implementing reform is crucial. The school board's primary responsibilities are to set direction for the district, set policy, allocate resources, communicate with the public, and hold the superintendent accountable for outcomes. These roles provide the foundation for any successful reform initiative which without, could easily falter. CSBA is convening its own Linked Learning Task Force this summer to further develop strategies for districts who are thinking of moving in this direction. www.csba.org |

In the News
News Highlight: Linked Learning featured in TOP-Ed
Linked Learning was featured in a column recently posted to the Silicon Valley Education Foundation blog, TOP-Ed.
Excerpt from the column:
Schools like High Tech High and the Construction Technology Academy have allowed practice to transcend the century-old debate over the value of academic versus vocational education. They want both. They believe the symbiosis engages students who would otherwise drop out or who would glide through high school's path of least resistance.
Several California educators and organizations have been attempting to craft a practical solution.

Policy Watch
Update: May Revise
LEGISLATURE REJECTS GOVERNOR'S PROPOSAL TO "SUSPEND" DATA SYSTEMS The budget subcommittees in both the Senate and Assembly voted to restore full funding for CalPADS and CalTIDES. The two subcommittees adopted slightly difference versions of the budget allocation, so the issue will be considered in the two-house budget conference committee.
Update: SB 1X1 Signed into Law
On April 19th Governor Brown signed SB 1X1 into law, establishing that $8 million from the California Energy Commission would be allocated annually over five years to fund the start-up of 90 new California Partnership Academies in the job sectors of clean technology and renewable energy.
