Greetings!

As we move through the second half of the academic year, students and teachers are preparing for the PSSA (PA System of School Assessment) testing that begins in March and April for several grades.

The district is moving through the budget process and has scheduled a Community Forum on the budget on March 1 at 7 p.m. in the High School South Auditorium. Some special board meetings on the budget are also planned. Watch our web site for more information.
Budget process timeline

The district and Board of Directors have been further evaluating district departments and program areas from a budgeting perspective. We have established a cohort group of similar districts across the state, and we continue to evaluate how other successful districts are handling certain aspects of their district to determine if we can become even more efficient. At upcoming board meetings the administration will present reports on various aspects of the district in regard to budget along with comparisons to districts in the cohort group. These reports can be found on the district web site.

The community is invited to a special Community Forum on the budget March 1, 2012 at 7 p.m. in the High School South Auditorium.
Administrators take on new roles
District administrators align in new positions

Jason Perrin
Jason Perrin
Earlier this fall a number of administrative shifts took place as Superintendent O'Donnell aligned the district leadership to best serve our students and staff. In the central office, Mr. Jason Perrin, formerly principal at Mount Nittany Middle School, is now the Supervisor of Elementary and Middle Level Education. In his place, Mr. Brian Ishler will serve as interim principal at MNMS for the remainder of the school year. Mr. Perrin will work closely with Mr. Brian Peters, who was just named as Director of K-8 Curriculum. Mr. Peters had been the principal at Easterly Parkway Elementary School, and that role is being filled by Ms. Tonya Black for the remainder of the school year. Ms. Black had been an Instructional Support Teacher at Ferguson Township Elementary.

At the high school level, Dr. Marybeth Irvin will now move from the K-12 Director of Curriculum to the position of 9-12 Director of Curriculum. Also at the high school level, Ms. Sharon Perry will fill the role of Career and Technical Center Director and Grade 11 principal, vacated by Mr. Barry King. Mr. Larry Walker will continue on in his role of Interim Grade 10 principal for the remainder of the school year in Ms. Perry's place.

Superintendent Bob O'Donnell stated, "The individuals assuming new roles have proven to our school community their high level of expertise, commitment and ability to be responsive to the people with whom they work. Overall, we feel that placing these individuals into these respective roles enables our district to most effectively support our classroom teachers and maximize student learning.

State High Athletics

State College fall sports were extremely successful with the football team making it to the PIAA AAAA quarterfinal round before falling to North Allegheny. The girls volleyball team also made it to the
quarterfinal round of the PIAA State Championships.

The student athletes competing in all of these sports are representing the district in great fashion. Please check the Athletics web site to learn more about these teams, check their schedules, and make some time to support these students in their endeavors. Spring sports physicals are due in the Athletics office by Feb. 27.
District-wide Facilities Master Plan Update
The process begins anew

The first steps in the process of updating our Facilities Master Plan as required by law have begun. An architectural firm will be hired to lead the process and the community will be involved in major portions of the update. Especially significant in the plan is the high school and several elementary schools. Read the Superintendent's overview of the process.

Zachary Schiffer

Zachary Schiffer, State High Senior, has been named a finalist in the Intel Science Talent Search. The Intel® Science Talent Search®, a program of the Society for Science and the Public, is the nation's most prestigious science research competition for high school seniors. It recognizes 300 students and their schools as semifinalists each year. From that select pool, 40 finalists are then invited to Washington, DC in March to undergo final judging, display their work to the public, meet with notable scientists, and compete for the top award of $100,000.

Poveromo
Poveromo, Sutterlin, Anderson, Crawford

Susan Anderson, high school Social Studies teacher; Jane Sutterlin, instructional technology specialist; and Debrah Poveromo, social studies department coordinator and US history teacher; were presented with plaques by Chris Crawford, CEO of Schoolwires, at a recent State College Borough Council meeting. They were recognized for their contributions to an innovative global learning program that was developed by Schoolwires. The teachers were early adopters of the Schoolwires Greenleaf International Classroom Exchange Program that pairs State College students with peers in China in a virtual environment. They were instrumental in developing a curriculum for the program. Their work was also featured in the Feb. 1 edition of "Education Week."
