Happy 2011 to all!

But wait - 4709 is nearly upon us. February 3rd is the first day of Xin-Mao (辛卯); the year of the Rabbit.  As I was born in the Year of the Rabbit, you can be sure we'll aim for a lot of fun this year. See the "save the date" sidebar for details.

Just to get things warmed up, this month on-line purchases of all green teas are discounted 10% - click here to order.

Did you ever wonder "what's in a name?" In Taiwan "oolong" often means more than we think it does. You can find out more in the note below.

And speaking of oolong, don't forget to register for the Tillerman oolong class being held on January 29th. We have some very special WuYi Yancha teas to try.

When is an oolong an oolong?

...when it's a Qing Xin Da

Qing Xin Oolong

Qing Xin Da is a widely grown cultivar in Taiwan where it is known by most as the "oolong" variety. In fact, in Taiwan when someone refers to an "oolong" they almost always mean the cultivar, not the manufacturing style. Don't be surprised when someone says they prefer the "oolong" to the "jin xuan" - both teas may be oolongs but only one is an oolong oolong.

Oolong Tea Tasting and Class

January 29th, 2011

Join us as we re-inaugurate our monthly tea class and tastings on January 29th with a tasting of the "Big 4 famous varietals" from Wuyi Shan (Fujian province, China). Although this is a rare opportunity to taste all four of the top Yancha varietals, the class is for everyone from those new to tea to those who are regular tea-drinkers. Some of the teas we will taste are rarely seen outside of China much less in California.

Saturday January 29th at 10:00 at the Tillerman Tea shop. Space is limited; reservations are on a first come first served basis. There is a $10 participation fee that can be applied as a credit on all purchases made at Tillerman following the class. To reserve your spot click here and tell us how many people will be attending.
