Greetings!
We are excited to once again be hosting an early childhood statewide conference. What a great way to kick-off the new academic year - joining early childhood colleagues at Boise State University for a first rate conference!
Our theme this year, Head to Toe, embraces the many areas of research and effective practices in Early Care and Education. Our goal is to provide you with an opportunity to go beyond a broad overview of select topics in Early Care and Education by choosing an educational track.
In conjunction with the conference, Idaho AEYC is hosting a fund-raising event on Saturday, September 10. This includes a gala and live auction in the evening. Lots of fun networking will be taking place in the Student Union Building on the BSU campus in Boise.
Mark your calendar and plan to join us at a great event - the Idaho AEYC 2011 Early Childhood Statewide Conference, September 8-10, 2011. More information will be coming soon.

Strengthening Families Specialization Completed by 80 Participants
Congratulations to the 80 IdahoSTARS child care providers who completed the Strengthening Families Specialization process from October 2010 to June 2011! The Strengthening Families Specialization is a broad, deep, personal exploration of the Strengthening Families framework. This process involved completion of 17 hours of basic level training, 15 hours of intermediate or advanced level training, plus the submission of a portfolio. The portfolio documents personal implementation of the strategies learned in the trainings plus plans for future actions to continue the work of partnering with parents to improve the quality of child care and to reduce child abuse and neglect.
A quote from one of the participants: The "Strengthening Families" Specialization program... is one of the best programs I have ever seen.I know at my center it has opened my eyes to the many different ways of caring not only for children but for families as well. I have always cared about the day care families, but this program has put a whole new light on it....Thank you for offering this program and giving us the opportunity to participate."
Strengthening Families Train-the-Trainer Event in LA
The National Network of Toolbox Trainers in the Strengthening Families curriculum gained 25 new members in May 2011! Maureen Durning, Jane Zink, and Elena Rodriguez conducted a train-the-trainer event for trainers from Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) who work with child care providers and preschool teachers. This was the first group to purchase the materials in Spanish as well as in English. This brings the number of trainers trained in the toolbox curriculum to over 150 in Idaho and 7 other states.

Question:
Is IdahoSTARS Professional Development System (PDS) Registry a membership organization?
Answer:
No. The IdahoSTARS Professional Development System (PDS) Registry is a program within the IdahoSTARS Project that provides a career lattice, pathway, and incentive program based on national standards for individuals working in early care and education.
The IdahoSTARS Project is a partnership between the Idaho Association for the Education of Young Children (Idaho AEYC), and the University of Idaho's Center on Disabilities and Human Development (CDHD).
Although Idaho AEYC is a membership organization, an IdahoSTARS PDS Registry participant does not automatically become a member of Idaho AEYC. To read more on this topic, see Puzzled in the April 2011 issue.
To learn more about membership in this professional organization, visit NAEYC or contact Jane Zornik.
Do you have something that is puzzling you? Send your question to Jane Zornik. One question will be selected for publication each month. Names will not be published.
