Author Visit and Book Signing

Today,  St. Thomas More students welcomed nonfiction children's author Ginjer L. Clarke.  Ms. Clarke read her exciting nonfiction animal books to grades K to 5.  She talked about being an author, how a book gets made, writing tips and exercises, and fascinating facts about some unusual creatures.  The funding for this program was provided by the STM PTO.

International Festival - We Need Your Help!

October 13, 2012   12-4 pm

THIS YEAR'S INTERNATIONAL FESTIVAL IS GOING TO BE "OUT OF THIS WORLD"!

Do you know which country sent the first animal in space to orbit the earth?  Can you name the six International Space Program that have flown animals into deep space?  Did you know the International Space Station weighs 100 million pounds and is four times as large as the Russian space station Mir, and about five times as large as the U.S. Skylab?
Come to the International Festival to find out the answers to these questions and more interesting facts about the Countries and their partnerships on the International Space Station!
Now, would you believe the International Festival is only 4 weeks away? Have you reserved your spot and is your family name on the attached list?
Entrance fee per family, including volunteers, is ONE DISH or DESSERT from your US State, Country, or Continent of origin to serve 8-10 people. There will be a Cake Walk, donated International Gift Baskets and a raffle that includes an IPOD Touch, Lego Space Shuttle Expedition, Nook e-reader, American Girl dolls and many  more.  The raffle and cake walk tickets are $2 per ticket or $5 for 3 tickets.
Please volunteer and/or make an International gift basket or other donation for the raffle (every $10 donated is equivalent to 1 volunteer hour), please contact Jose Dimas or Carolyn Majowka at stminternationalfest@yahoo.com

Basketball
STM - 4th Grade Girls CYO Players!

Looking for any 4th grade girl who is interested in playing basketball!

Our 4th grade girls coach for the season is Phil McConnell and our own STM parent David Jayne will be his Assistant.  In addition to this CYO team, Phil coaches another 4th grade team who will play in a fall league only.  He has asked any STM 4th grade girl who is interested in playing basketball for STM this year or maybe for his other team, to send out an email to get you into the gym early.  Coach Phil has a tryout/open gym this week.  There is no pressure on attending nor, if you don't attend, it will have no bearing on playing for STM CYO later in the fall.

If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to email Michael Paul at stmcyo@aol.com or Coach Phil at phillymac4@hotmail.com.

Parents,

The tryout will be held on Friday (Sept. 21st) at Weyanoke ES from 6:00pm-7:30pm.(address is below)
Please understand that fall league is about getting the girls out on the court again to play and get to know each other. Winning is a plus but will not be our focus at this time.

If you have any questions, please let me know.
Thank you,

Phil McConnell

SeaPerch for 6th, 7th and 8th Grade Students

Melissa Pore is once again offering the The SeaPerch Program this fall at STM.  SeaPerch is a STEM based curriculum project developed by MIT in which students build underwater rovers from a basic kit of everyday materials. This program introduces students to the basics of engineering and physics as they learn how to use tools to create an underwater robot, modify their design, test and troubleshoot electrical connections, and finally to navigate their vehicle remotely in the water through a series of challenges! STM 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students in the SeaPerch Sub Club will then have the opportunity to enter a regional challenge to see how their underwater rovers measure up under pressure!

In order to participate in the program, students must have a parent present with them for each build session. Each student and parent will attend at least 2 of 3 build sessions to be able to participate in the regional challenge in Manassas, VA on January 21 from 8am-12:30pm.  Parent attendance is a REQUIREMENT for this project.
