Strive to be more

Urge your legislators to support Education Improvement Scholarship legislation.

Legislation introduced in the Senate and House would create income tax credits for businesses whose donations fund scholarships.  Those scholarships, in turn, would enable low-income students to attend nonpublic K-12 schools.  This Education Improvement Scholarship initiative is the Virginia Catholic Conference's top education priority.  It is vitally important to families with limited economic means and to Catholic and other nonpublic schools across Virginia as they work to sustain enrollments and provide opportunities for children in their communities.

Please help push this critical school choice initiative all the way to passage this year.  Click here to view a pre-drafted (but editable) message that could be sent to your Senator and your Delegate to urge their support for this measure.  [After clicking the link in the previous sentence, you will need to scroll down and click "Send Message" in order for your Senator and Delegate to receive your message.]

Please also forward this important message to others you believe may be interested in responding. As mentioned in a prior alert, a rally will be held in support of this legislation, with Governor McDonnell as the keynote speaker.  Please consider attending this exciting event.  See the rally flyer for further details.

If you are viewing this alert via the Virginia Catholic Conference's website or if a friend forwarded it to you, you are invited to join the Conference's advocacy network.  This enables you to receive direct email alerts and updates regularly from the Conference regarding respect-life, social-justice, and education issues.  If interested, please click here to enroll and complete the very short electronic form that is provided.

Help ensure that more families in need of financial assistance can choose the best educational opportunities for their children!

Safety
There have been several incidents of cars being vandalized during Mass. Reminder...do not leave valuable items in your car including your purses.

Fr. Rippy also strongly suggests that you do not leave your purse in the pew when you go up to receive Communion.  Please take your purse with you.
Many thanks.
Deadline for tuition assistance applications is fast approaching!
The Diocese of Arlington and the STM School and Parish Community are committed to making a Catholic education available to all who seek it.  All families are encouraged to apply for tuition aid if assistance is needed.  The process for applying for tuition aid must be initiated by submitting your application and supporting information to FACTS Tuition Aid via their website: www.factstuitionaid.com

Only families who submit their information to FACTS will be considered for assistance.  Families applying for tuition assistance for high school students as well as elementary school students will need to complete their applications by the high school deadline of January 23, 2012.  All other families will need to complete their application by the STM deadline of March 19, 2012.  Please feel free to contact Mrs. Ashworth in our school office if you have questions about registration or tuition assistance.

Registration Update

Thank you again for making your commitment to St. Thomas More Cathedral School for the 2012 -2013 school year.  As of today, we will be welcoming 45 new families to the STM community for next year - with a total of 78 new students including siblings of current families.  Of note, 17 out of the 30 spaces in Pre-K will be filled by siblings!  Imagine that!

If you know of anyone interest in STM, we are currently accepting registration for third, fifth and seventh gradea and maintaining waiting lists in grades: Pre-Kindergarten, Kindergarten, first, second, fourth, and sixth.  It looks like another great year for STM.

Inclement Weather Policy

St. Thomas More Cathedral School follows Arlington County's procedures for emergency closings. Announcements are made on television and radio. You may call the Arlington County Public School hotline at 1-866-322-4277. You may also log on to http://www.arlington.k12.va.us/Page/1152 for information. If Arlington County has a delayed opening, STM will have a delayed opening and if a delay opening occurs on an early dismissal day, school will dismiss at 2:55 PM. When school opens late, Extended Day will open late.

Occasionally schools are closed before regular dismissal time because of the weather. These closings will be announced via our electronic notification system sending messages to both phone and email addresses provided by the parents to the school. Please do not call the school office, as it is very important for the phone lines to be open for any emergencies. Please make sure your child has instructions about what to do if sent home early due to inclement weather. Extended Day will be open only for a very short time as parents are expected to pick up their children without delay. When school is closed all day no Extended Daycare is provided.

February is Dental Health Month.
Dr. Iverson of Arlington will return this year on Thursday to bring his giant tooth and give presentations to the students on oral preventative care, as well as to answer their questions. The students will bring home information that he and his assistant have prepared for the students.  Ask what your student learned from him!

Upcoming events:
Screen Free Week April 30-May 6
We are looking for donations of activity related items(such as frisbees, jump-ropes, kites, MP3 players) and gift cards(such as ITunes, Dicks or Sports Authority)   to raffle off for students who complete the 7 day challenge.  Please
label items "Clinic-Screen Free".

Winter Clothing Drive

During our winter clothing drive, St. Thomas More collected over 400 items of clothing to help those in need.  The clothing was donated to Matthew 25 at Our Lady Queen of Peace Catholic Church in Arlington.  Matthew 25 distributes about  2000 articles of clothing weekly to about 140 people.

Thanks to all those who donated!  If you would like any further information about donating clothing to Matthew 25, please e-mail Nancy Meehan at nmeehan@stmschool.org.
Pizza Lunch Friday to Benefit Yearbook
Pizza Lunch this Friday will benefit the Yearbook Program.   Since Yearbook does not have room parents to organize volunteers, we will definitely need your help on Friday.  Please consider volunteering  between 11:00 and 1:30.  If you can't be there for the whole time, that's OK.  We'd love to see you for any part of Pizza Lunch.  Also, please send in non-food and healthy snack items for the Market Table.  Remember, we sell everything on the Market Table for 25 cents!

Thank you!

Thank You!

Thank all of you for your support of our STM Book Fair. Although the final numbers are not in yet, I am happy to report that we made more money this year than ever before. I have lots of requests from your children for books to buy and because of your generosity, I will be able to fulfill these and those of the teachers.

I especially want to thank Mrs. Pellegrino, Mrs. Cake and all the volunteers who gave so generously of their time. Without your help none of this could have happened.

We are lucky to have such a beautiful library and now it will be filled with more beautiful books!

                                                                                    Thank you,

                                                                                    Mrs. O'Rourke

Race for Education Coordinator Needed!
The PTO is in need of a volunteer to coordinate this year's Race for Education.  This event usually raises over $20,000 for the school and the kids love it!  There are a number of parents and teachers who have offered to work on the race, but we are in need of one great person to coordinate the event.  Please contact Laurie Purpuro at laurie.purpuro@klgates.com if you think you can help with this or if you have questions.  Thank you very much.
