STRIVING FOR MORE SEATS

BUILDING FAITH AND FUTURES

Facilities Update January 31, 2012

On behalf of the entire Facilities Committee, I want to thank the parents, teachers and staff who attended the informational presentation Striving for More Seats. Thank you also to all who took the time to answer the Assessment Questionnaire / Survey. Your input is extremely valuable at this critical time when the development of an expansion and renovation is being considered. The committee strongly believes that communication is key in this process and wants the entire STM community to be involved. Regular updates will be sent out to keep everyone informed of what is happening.

Regarding the survey, we received 76 responses. The committee is reading the results and will provide a consensus of its findings in the next few weeks.

We will be attending a meeting tonight with Parish Representatives. It is critical to have the parish involved in this endeavor. Their feedback and comments are necessary to provide a complete picture of the needs for the STM community.

The Diocese's Office of Planning, Construction & Facilities is busy drafting Letters of Interest to architectural firms. Once these are identified, an RFP (Request for Proposal) will be sent out. In order to obtain the best "product," additional user group meetings will take place to develop and define a building program that meets both current and future needs.

The committee has also been conducting more research into the complicated, though necessary site and utility issues we will be encountering. These issues take time to work through, thus the earlier they are identified, the better. We have also begun to address costs and fundraising capabilities and limitations.

Please check the STM website under Facilities periodically for additional information that may be posted. Please do not hesitate to contact me with any comments, concerns or questions. We look forward to working together to create the best learning environment for our children!

Thank you again.

Economic Barriers Shouldn't Prevent Parents from Picking Best School

Join Rally to Support Tax Credits to Make Education Choice Possible

Because the Church teaches that parents are the primary educators of their children, the Virginia Catholic Conference is supporting legislation that would allow low-income parents to have the same flexibility as other parents to pick the best education for their children. Parents and students are invited to show their support of school choice legislation at a Feb. 7th rally on the lawn of the state Capitol in Richmond. Gov. Bob McDonnell will be the keynote speaker at the 11 a.m. - noon event.

The legislation would provide tax credits to businesses that donate scholarship funds for low income students to attend parochial or private schools.  Stay tuned for updates on that legislation and how you can support it. Following the rally, tours of the state Capitol and other key state buildings will follow, with reservations. Learn more about school choice and the rally, which is also sponsored by the Family Foundation, the Mid-Atlantic Catholic Schools Consortium and others, at www.vacatholic.org.

Deadline for tuition assistance applications is fast approaching!
The Diocese of Arlington and the STM School and Parish Community are committed to making a Catholic education available to all who seek it.  All families are encouraged to apply for tuition aid if assistance is needed.  The process for applying for tuition aid must be initiated by submitting your application and supporting information to FACTS Tuition Aid via their website: www.factstuitionaid.com

Only families who submit their information to FACTS will be considered for assistance.  Families applying for tuition assistance for high school students as well as elementary school students will need to complete their applications by the high school deadline of January 23, 2012.  All other families will need to complete their application by the STM deadline of March 19, 2012.  Please feel free to contact Mrs. Ashworth in our school office if you have questions about registration or tuition assistance.
St. Thomas More Winter Clothing Drive

As part of our Catholic Schools Week activities this year, St. Thomas More is conducting a winter clothing drive to benefit those in need in our community.  Please help us help others by donating your gently used winter clothing (coats, scarves, hats, jeans, t-shirts, sweatpants, sweatshirts, boots, shoes, etc.).

Donations should be delivered to Room 5 or 7 by Thursday, February 2 2012.  If you have any questions, please e-mail Nancy Meehan at nmeehan@stmschool.org.

Thank you in advance for your help!
