Strive to be more
Dear Parents,

November 11 is Veterans Day, the date set aside to honor our veterans and the sacrifices they have made and are making so that you and I can experience the precious gift of freedom that we hold so dear.  This national holiday was originally known as Armistice Day to commemorate the date, "the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month," when hostilities between the Allied nations and Germany ceased at the end of World War I.  It was not until June 1, 1954, however, when the name was officially changed to Veterans Day.  It is fitting that we offer a special prayer of thanksgiving to God for our country, the lives of freedom and peace which we live, and for the many men and women who unselfishly defend our right to these freedoms, often with their own lives.  God Bless America!

Teachers are looking forward to meeting with you on Thursday and Friday of this week, November 11 and 12, for your Parent Teacher Conferences.  (These are 11:30 dismissal days!)  This is an opportunity for teachers to get to know your children better, from you, their parents, who know them better than anyone!  It is also a chance for you to get to know the professional educators who strive to help every child learn and grow in our wonderful St. Thomas More School.  How can you prepare for these meetings?  Here are a few tips to help you set the stage for these important meetings.

  • First of all, talk to your child!  Ask if he or she has anything they want the teacher to know, or might want you to discuss, and jot down their questions, as well as your own.
  • Arrive on time for your meeting!  Others are scheduled after you, and the teacher must stick to the schedule.
  • Be willing to share information with the teacher to help her see the side of your child you experience every day.  It might help her to know that your child struggles with homework, or is suffering with allergies and is having trouble sleeping, or has just lost a pet.  Issues like these impact learning and teachers need to know what is wrong in order to help.
  • Listen with an open mind!  Remember that teachers want your children to flourish in their classes...they want to help!  St. Thomas More School teachers are dedicated to your children, and they are on your side!
  • Your appointment time is 20 minutes long from start to finish, and the next family is waiting.  Do stick to the most important matters, and be respectful of the schedule.
  • Ask questions, and jot down notes to take home and mull over.  Discuss topics with your child to help them feel part of the process.
  • As the end of the conference, do thank the teacher!  If you have more questions, don't hesitate to send a note and ask the teacher to meet with you again.

I hope that these ideas have been helpful!  The weather is supposed to be lovely and warm...enjoy the next few days!

God bless,
Eleanor McCormack

Notes From Your School Nurse

Dear Parents,

NOVEMBER/COATS- We have entered the winter coat/warm jacket season. The children will go out for recess daily unless the windchill is dangerously low, so be sure to have each student bring a coat or jacket daily. A sweatshirt is not enough to keep them warm on these chilly days. Keeping hat and gloves in each child's backpack is also a good habit!

EXTENDED DAY MEDICINES- If your child uses Extended Day and is on medication, we require a second dose to be kept in extended day for quick access in case of an emergency. If you receive a letter from the clinic regarding this, please return a second dose of medicine to school by November 15th so extended day can be properly prepared in an emergency.
Thank you.

Health screenings are ongoing. If you have a concern about your child's hearing or vision (and your child was not screened last week with the Lion's van), please send me a note and I can check your student.

24 Hour Rule
Parents: Please observe our 24 hour rule as required by Virginia Department of Health regulations.  Any student sent home for fever, vomiting and/or frequent diarrhea, must wait 24 hours after symptoms subside (without medication) before returning to school. This helps prevent the spread of communicable disease and also is for your child's comfort.

LIVE NATIVITY
Wednesday, December 1, 2010  From 7:00 to 8:00 in the evening  on the Front Lawn of Paul VI Catholic High School, Fairfax, VA

The miracle of the Christmas Story comes alive and you see this special birth unfold before you.  Bring your family and take part in the census; enter the town of Bethlehem and be there for the Angels chorus.  There may not be room at the Inn but the storytellers are sure to warm you in the night's chill.  Families are invited to sing treasured carols with us and feel the magic and love of the season in a very powerful way.  We encourage you to dress as a visitor to Bethlehem, a Shepherd, or Angel and to bring a flashlight to shine on our actors. Please bring a toy for our toys-for-tots drive, or a bag of gently used clothing or shoes for Christ House.  Refreshments will be served afterwards in the cafeteria.  Please join us and be a part of this magical evening.

Healthy Idea!

Try this Healthy Harvest Vegetable for Fall:  Zucchini! - This squash is a great source of manganese, Vitamin A (including the carotenoid beta-carotene), fiber, potassium, folate, copper, riboflavin and phosphorus.  Many of these nutrients have been found to help prevent heart disease.  The magnesium found in zucchini has been shown to reduce the incidence of heart disease and stroke.  Working together with the potassium, the magnesium found in zucchini helps reduce high blood pressure.

Fit Chef's Tip:
Place 1 Tbs. olive oil on medium high heat and add 1 medium zucchini, thinly sliced with 1 medium onion, sliced thin.  Toss in 3 cloves minced garlic and salt and pepper to taste for a quick and vitamin rich side dish perfect for fall.
It's important to include a variety of vegetables on your menu, it helps keep your meals interesting, provides a vast array of nutrients and also minimizes boredom with your meal planning.  Give these vegetables a try, if you don't already eat them - you may be surprised at how easy and simple it is to supercharge your plate.

Have a healthy week! Please send any healthy ideas to:  laurie.purpuro@klgates.com
Submissions for Wednesday STM Bulletin must be in by close of business Tuesday.
 Thank you.
