Summer 2012

Message from the President

Want to be a part of helping Mount Union's amazing athletes in their respective programs? Then get involved with the M Club! We are in need of more M Club members to come out and support our efforts. This past year we were able to support the track team through the purchase of javelins; the baseball team by purchasing windows for their newly-renovated press box; and supported the wrestling, volleyball, women's basketball and track teams during their post-season efforts. The M Club also sponsored the student-run ESPY awards, which allow honors to be bestowed on current athletes by their peers. We can do more, and with your help, we hope to do so. Please consider attending an upcoming meeting to be a part of something really special.

Many thanks to all who helped to make the reverse raffle another wonderful success. A special thanks goes to the committee, which consisted of Bob Atkinson, Dave Wolpert, Bob Berrodin, Paul Gulling and Matt and Liz Johnson. Our second biggest fundraiser, the annual golf outing will be held on Saturday, July 7. Please contact the Office of Alumni Relations and University Activities to get your foursome registered. All are welcome - parents, friends and M Club members. Come out for a great day, which is always tons of fun!

Last but certainly not least, congrats to our Mount Union athletic programs! This year, teams won the OAC Men's All-Sports trophy and came in second for the Women's All-Sports trophy. We are PROUD of the tradition that is RAIDER ATHLETICS.

GO RAIDERS!

Mount Union won its record 13th men's all-sports trophy in 2011-12. The Purple Raiders claimed conference titles in football, wrestling and outdoor track and field while they finished second in cross country, indoor track and field, men's golf and baseball. Mount Union also finished second in the women's all-sports trophy standings, winning conference titles in women's basketball, indoor and outdoor track and field and volleyball.

Clyde Lamb Award Winners

Every year, each OAC institution recognizes an outstanding male and female student-athlete. Those student-athletes are given the Clyde Lamb Award and recognized at the conference's annual awards dinner, which was held this year on May 16 in Columbus. Criteria for the award include at least two years participation in an OAC-sponsored sport, senior status, a minimum grade point average of 3.0 and sportsmanlike conduct in a manner that has brought credit to the student-athlete and his or her institution. The award was founded in 1985 and is named in honor of Clyde A. Lamb. Lamb organized the department of health and physical education at Ohio Northern University in 1929, and served as a coach, department chairman and athletics director at ONU from 1929-64. He continued to teach full-time until his death in 1969. Mount Union's Clyde Lamb winners for 2011-12 are Amanda Rose, women's basketball and Alex Ferrara, football.

Rose is a three-time Academic All-OAC pick that was named to the 2012 All-OAC Second Team. She was the Purple Raiders' top rebounder at 5.3 points per game and was third in scoring at 11.5 points per game for a Mount Union team that won its third-straight OAC Tournament title and advanced to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament. A two-time All-OAC selection, she is 10th on the school's all-time scoring list with 1,111 points. Off the court, she is a business administration major with a 3.95 grade point average who has done internships with Fannie May Confections in Akron, Mount Union's Office of Human Resources and The Timken Company in Canton.

Ferrara was a four-year letterman on the Mount Union football team and joins Greg Micheli (2007, 2008) and Chuck Moore (2000, 2001) as the third two-time Academic All-American in school history. He holds a 3.77 grade point average as a business major and is a three-time All-OAC and Academic All-OAC selection that was also a two-time All-North Region pick. Off the field, he did a mission trip to El Salvador and was part of Trick-or-Treat with Raiders project. He also was one of 10 finalists for the Gagliardi Trophy given to the top all-around student-athlete.

Get involved - Join us at an M Club meeting!

All members of M Club are encouraged to get involved - attend meetings, join a committee, attend sporting events, support with a membership gift and more. Our next meeting is at 7 p.m. on June 21 at Tailgater's in Alliance. Check the website prior to coming for any updates.

M Club has been able to accomplish so much after a recent revival but with more than 2,700 members, we can do even more! Here is how YOU can show support:

Membership Gifts

M Club membership gifts enhance the Club's ability to provide support to the current athletic programs at the University as well as continue to fund the functions of the Club such as the M Club Induction Ceremony. Gift levels are designed to promote enthusiasm and financial support for Raider athletics at a level you are comfortable with - any amount is welcome! Besides M Club support, coaches submit a funds request form that is reviewed by the M Club executive board and brought forward to a general meeting for members to vote.

This fiscal year, which ends June 30, the M Club general fund provided two javelins and a team dinner for athletes competing in nationals for track, windows for the baseball press box and volleyball referee pole pads and post-season support. The M Club also hosted the women's basketball team's Thanksgiving Shootout Tournament, gave post-season support, purchased new warm-ups for the men's soccer team and bought additional mats and a team meal for athletes competing in nationals for the wrestling program. The M Club also sponsored the student-run ESPY awards.

This support was all made possible through your generous membership gifts! Please consider supporting each year at a level that is comfortable for you.
