Summer 2011

Message from the President

I would like to thank all those who participated and contributed to the 3rd Annual M Club Reverse Raffle and Silent Auction. This year's event was once again an overall success, and I truly believe that all who attended enjoyed themselves. On Friday, April 1 it was announced that the Dan Gorman Scholarship Endowment met its goal. I'm proud to say that M Club helped to make this possible by designating a portion of this year's proceeds from the event to the scholarship fund. I also want to give a special thanks to Tiffany Hogya and Anne Graffice for all of their efforts.

We are looking forward to the opportunity to continue the ongoing support of the University's athletic programs and the M Club Hall of Fame. This is all made possible through events like the Reverse Raffle and Silent Auction, Golf Outing and M Club membership gifts. The Club recently approved a request by John Witkowski, men's head soccer coach, to purchase warm-ups for the upcoming season and from Suzy Venet-Pietz, women's head basketball coach, to travel to a tournament in Florida next season.  Funding has also been provided to support the stadium re-turfing project.

Welcome to our newest members of M Club shown in the photo above! Congratulations on your athletic achievements and graduation from Mount Union.

We are always looking for more involvement from alumni. Please feel free to reach out to me with any thoughts or ideas on ways to increase involvement, provide additional support to the athletic program or improve the M Club Hall of Fame process.

Read below to learn more about upcoming happenings and events - I encourage you to get involved!

Sincerely,

Bill Borchert '98

Hall of Fame Nomination Time

Each year, Mount Union honors a select group of former student-athletes, coaches and athletic supporters with induction into the M Club Hall of Fame.

There are three categories of membership:
  • M Club Hall of Fame
  • M Club Award of Excellence
  • Honorary M Club member
In order for someone to be selected for the Hall of Fame, he or she must be nominated by an M Club member. Nominate someone today!

The Hall of Fame Selection Committee reviews the criteria used for selection and decided that the following guidelines would continue to be used as the basis for selection ... "the record and character of the individual must be so outstanding that there is no question as to his or her qualifications."

Don't assume someone will automatically be inducted into the Hall of Fame - he or she needs to be nominated!

Clyde Lamb Award Winners

Every year, each OAC institution recognizes an outstanding male and female student-athlete.  Those student-athletes are given the Clyde Lamb Award and recognized at the conference's annual awards dinner. Criteria for the award includes at least two years participation in an OAC-sponsored sport, senior status, a minimum grade point average of 3.00 and sportsmanlike conduct in a manner that has brought credit to the student-athlete and his or her institution. Mount Union's Clyde Lamb winners for 2010-11 are Annie Patton (track and field) and Bill Schindel (wrestling).

Patton is a multiple All-OAC selection in the shot put and javelin.  She holds the Mount Union record in the javelin as she is the 2008 OAC Champion and an All-American in the event. She has also displayed extraordinary leadership in Fellowship of Christian Athletes and Raider Relief efforts. The native of Darlington, PA, has a 3.91 grade point average as an exercise science major and was named Mount Union's Outstanding Senior Woman at the annual Senior Recognition and Honors Convocation.

Schindel wrestled for three years at 197 pounds and is a three-time OAC Champion and only Mount Union's second-ever three-time All-American.  He placed third at this past year's NCAA Championships to help lead Mount Union to match its best team finish in school history with an eighth place finish.  His 83-career wins is the sixth highest total in Mount Union history.  Off the mat, he has a 3.45 grade point average as a physical education major and was a team captain this past wrestling season.
